Astronauts' Wives Tell How Faith Sustains Them

Thousands of workers who prepared and launched the Space Shuttle Columbia gathered at the Kennedy Space Center today to honor the crew members.
The church of two of those astronauts, Commander Rick Husband and Payload Specialist Michael Anderson, held its own memorial earlier this week. And the wives of those astronauts talked to their pastor about the tragedy, and how their faith has sustained them.

SANDY ANDERSON: It's not an experience I would wish on anybody. It's been hard, but I'm not in despair because I know where Michael's at. I have the assurance that he believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, he's safe. That gives me tremendous comfort. So we're going to be okay. We're going to get through this and I want people to know and understand that we're going to be fine. The Lord's going to help us through this event. The children are going to be okay. So, continue to pray for us.

EVELYN HUSBAND: Well, my feelings are exactly the same as Sandy's. I mean I have absolute assurance that Rick is in heaven and that's a real blessing to me. It's a very difficult time, obviously, but just to know that Rick's with Jesus is a tremendous relief to me and comfort. For the last, I don't know, however many couple years, ever since they've been assigned this flight, Sandy and I have been prayer partners together. And Mike and Rick have been prayer partners together. And we have prayed as couples and with each other for the safety of this mission and for God's glory. So I have to believe now that God's glory has been reached and will continue to be reached through their lives and through our testimony of God's strength.

So many people keep saying to me, you're so strong, you're so strong. And I don't feel strong at all. But I will say this. I know my God is incredibly strong and that's where my strength comes from. And I'm very thankful for that. Sandy and I are no different than anybody else in that God is God for everyone. And the promises in the Bible are absolutely true. We are walking them right now. They have been tested to the max for both of us and they are proving to be absolutely and totally true.

And so the foundation needs to be set before you hit a crisis. You can't possibly establish that faith and that trusting base the day it hits. You've got to have it in place in advance. So now is the time to become right with God. Now is the time to establish that foundation. He will carry you through anything. I mean, I can't think of anything worse than this, and He is carrying us. I don't like it, but He has got His hand on me and on Sandy and I'm very thankful for that.

Before leaving on Columbia's mission, Michael Anderson told his minister, "If this thing doesn't come out right, don't worry about me, I'm just going on higher."
