Posted by: JG on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 - 05:18 PM
videotape released on Wednesday showed Giuliana Sgrena a female Italian reporter, pleading for her life and asking the United States to pull out its occupying forces from Iraq.
"videotape released on Wednesday showed Giuliana Sgrena a female Italian reporter, pleading for her life and asking the United States to pull out its occupying forces from Iraq."

Her life is in your hands... Who will stand in the gap and pray for her. Who will ask the Lord to deliver her out of the hands of her enemy. Who will pray for mercy when her enemy has none. In Jesus Name

"You must end the occupation, it's the only way we can get out of this situation," Giuliana Sgrena said in the videotape, obtained by Associated Press Television News.

Sgrena, 57, a reporter for Il Manifesto, an Italian newspaper, appeared alone in the brief footage, sobbing and clasping her hands, with a white background behind her.

"I ask the Italian government, the Italian people struggling against the occupation, I ask my husband, 'Please, help me,'" Sgrena said in French. "You must do all you can to end the occupation. I'm counting on you, you can help me."

"Withdraw from Iraq, these people must not suffer any longer," Sgrena said in the video.

This is the first tape of Sgrena, who was kidnapped earlier this month.

The new tape comes as a proof of Iraq’s dire security situation even after holding the elections.

Wearing a green blouse, Sgrena looked exhausted, and spoke with a halting voice, at times broken by crying.

The part of the message in which Sgrena spoke in Italian was even more emotional, showing her with hands joined in prayer, pleading for help.

"No one must come to Iraq anymore; do something for me, put pressure on the government so they withdraw their troops.

"My life depends on it," Sgrena cried.

Gabriele Polo, Il Manifesto's director, was quoted as saying "we know nothing but just seeing her alive is a positive sign." </font
