| | Mark Felt has said "he is sorry he undermined the reputation of the FBI. By being Deep Throat. I helped destroy and undermine the very institution I helped build.
Mark Felt's has said the reason he hid for so many years is because he knew what he did was wrong. His own view of his actions is therefore more instructive than anything Woodward has said.
Felt said that is the reason he denied for years being Deep Throat. He has been quoted many times: "It was not I and it is not I".
When, asked if it would be so terrible if he had been the source, he replied: "It would be terrible. This would completely undermine the reputation that you might have as a loyal, logical employee of the FBI."
Mark Felt said he is sorry he undermined the reputation of the FBI by being Deep Throat I helped undermine and destroy the very institution I spent my life building.
And I agree. A top official of the FBI has no business skulking around near parked cars, leaking confidential information about criminal investigations. His disgust with the Nixon White House was justified, but he should have expressed it openly and, if necessary, resigned many have said.
As Peggy Noonan, a Reagan speech writer, put it: "A hero would have come forward, resigned his position, declared his reasons, and exposed himself to public scrutiny. He would have taken the blows and the kudos . . . heroes pay the price."
As it was, he let others take "the blows, watching silently as other Nixon officials were accused of using Woodward for various underhand purposes. This, too, was distinctly un-heroic. It showed how much of a real coward he was. If he was a real hero he would have counted the cost and stood up as so many have and told the truth.
Mark Felt was a great help to Woodward and Bernstein, but without him the Watergate scandal would still have been revealed, the conspirators would still have gone to jail and Nixon would still have resigned. The only difference is that Woodward and Bernstein would not have gotten rich.
Please pray for this nation and for these men. Our young people need to learn to stand up for what they believe in.

His family see's their 91 year old grandpa in a different light: "Mark had expressed reservations in the past about revealing his identity and about whether his actions were appropriate for an FBI man. But as he recently told my mother, 'I guess people used to think Deep Throat was a criminal. But now they think he's a hero'"
Nick Jones, the grandson of W. Mark Felt, delivered a statement Tuesday on Felt's admission to being "Deep Throat" in the Watergate investigation which brought down the Nixon Administration 31 years ago:
"The family believes my grandfather, Mark Felt Sr., is a great American hero who went well and above the call of duty at much risk to himself to save his country from a horrible injustice. We all sincerely hope the country will see him this way as well."
And of course Woodward and Bernstein would make their account of Deep Throat or Mark Felt look good. By keeping Deep Throat secret Woodward and Bernstein got very rich and helped destroy people at the same time. These reporters are not likely to portray their own sources as fools or evil. So they profited greatly with the lie.
Woodward and Bernstein and Mark Felt shame on you. You helped destroy the reputation of so many other people as you sat by and laughed at their pain. Shame on you for hurting so many. You know what you did was wrong that is why it took you so many years to tell the truth.
Please pray for this nation and for these men. Our young people need to learn to stand up for what they believe in.
