Generational Curses????????

I have had this term brought to my attention several times. What I want are scriptures on this issue. Are we really plagued by the sins of our fathers? Does God hold generational curses against us? Are they something we need to pray about? I really never heard of this until I came to annointed. Can we please have a discussion about this? Oh, and please people don't let it get into arguments like I've seen too many times on too many of these threads. I am just curious about this issue and want more information on why some believe this and what it is based upon.

I myself personally believe that we are plagued by the sins of our fathers and our generation, It specifies it in the bible.. I myself have already repented all the way down to Abraham,, I went a little further though and did all the way down to Adam and Eve. If you go to your bible in the Old Testament look under Deuteronomy 27:11-26. Also Look under Deuteronomy 28:1-68.. As soon as I find the rest on this I will be more than happy to get back to you, but I think for now this is a good reference point to check out..And I know other Brothers and Sisters in Christ on here will guide you in the right direction as well.. GENERATIONAL curses

Part I
Continuous willful sinning, not only brings judgement upon the sinner, but can also bring a curse upon himself, his family and his children for generations to come. If not stopped, repented of and confessed before God, the curse will continue on from generation to generation. What an awesome responsibility of the parents towards their children.

A curse will not just appear out of no where for no reason, there is always a root cause . . .


"Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest."

Proverbs 26:2

The following is a list of the most common causes of Generational Curses:


1) Bowing down to 'other gods', 'idols'or 'graven images' in worship will bring a curse.


Exodus 20:3-5
3 "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"


Deuteronomy 7:25-26
25 "The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God. 26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou bea cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it for it is a cursed thing."



2) Rejecting 'Knowledge' or 'God's Word' and walking in 'Rebellion' or 'Stubboness' against it will bring a curse.


Deuteronomy 28:1-2, 15
1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. 15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:


Hosea 4:6
6 "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children."


3) Putting one's trust 'in man' or 'self' instead of 'Trusting God' brings a curse.


Jeremiah 17:5-6
5 "Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. 6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited."

4) Making 'unscriptural covenants' or 'compromising' with the ungodly will bring a curse.


Exodus 23:31-33
31 "And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee. 32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. 33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee."

5) Preaching anything 'other than Christ Jesus' will bring a curse.

Galatians 1:8-9
8 "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed."


6) Coming against or 'Cursing Israel' or any of God's 'anointed' ( also known as Racism ) will bring a curse.


Genesis 12:1-3
1 "Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."


I Chronicles 16:22
22 "Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm."


7) 'Rebellion', 'Stubboness' against or 'disrespect' for parents will bring a curse.


Exodus 20:12
12 "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."

Deuteronomy 27:16
16 "Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen."


8) 'Self-imposed' By the words of one's own mouth one can speak a curse upon one's self.

Proverbs 18:21
21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."


Matthew 27:24-25
24 "When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children."

9) 'Tithes / Offering' 'Giving' Refusing to 'tithe unto God' or to give unto the 'work of the ministry' or refusing to 'care for the poor' will bring a curse.


Malachi 3:8-9
8 "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? 9 In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation."


Proverbs 28:27
27 "He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse."


10) 'Stealing' ( thief ) and 'Sweareth falsly' ( lying ) will bring a curse.


Zechariah 5:1-4
"1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. 2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. 3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. 4 I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof."


How does a curse affect a family and coming generations? A curse will open the door to allow evil spirits to enter in, controlling, manipulating and destroying family members. These demonic spirits are known as Generational spirits and are passed from person to person, generation to generation.


These sins must be confessed and placed under the Blood of the Lamb, Christ Jesus. Through the Blood of Jesus we are washed, cleansed, and forgiven of our sins. By the shed Blood of Jesus, we are made the righteousness of God. By repenting and confessing the sins of our ancestors and our own sins, we can break any curse over us and rob the Generational spirits of the power and authority they need to rule over our families.

I am still studying this topic but when I get to this passage I have trouble believing that generational curses are still in effect.

Jer 31:27 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.
Jer 31:28 And it shall come to pass that, like as I have watched over them to pluck up and to break down and to overthrow and to destroy and to afflict, so will I watch over them to build and to plant, saith Jehovah.
Jer 31:29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.
Jer 31:30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.
Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband unto them, saith Jehovah.
Jer 31:33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith Jehovah: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people:
Jer 31:34 and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Jehovah; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith Jehovah: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

The new covenant was Christ, and it seems to me that here it is saying that when the new covenant is in place these old ways will depart. Now the Galatians passage Annointed Warrior mentioned says let "him" be accursed, but does not list his family also. The Matthew passage is the Jews speaking which are still believing in the old ways.

My question also is how would we ask forgiveness for the sins of our fathers if we don't know what they are? I have no idea what my great grand father may have done. Since I am not of Jewish decent do I ask forgiveness for the sins back to Abraham if I may not be one of his direct decendants? Do I say " God forgive me for what everyone of my decendants did" or do I have to learn my lineage and ask name by name?

They say that couples who have diabetes are likely to have children with the same "blood" disease.

Homosexuals say they were born that way. Well, if they really were, and some would agree, more than likely, you will find a history of this kind of behavior in their family. They may not know about the ability they have been given through Christ to break this curse.

An ancient ancestor may have been a palm reader, and may have convinced their children that they have that extra "something" others don't have. Children would think of it as a natural ability and not something connected to the occult.

If one parent is fat, and one is skinny, there is a 50% chance that the child will be fat, or skinny.

That child has the "_____________" (insert family name here) temper.

Nobody in that family has ever turned out good.

These are all curses that we may or may not know about. They can be handed down, made by society in an offhand way, or announced by an observer at anytime. They are sort of a contract with the devils. They give evil permission to stick to a body, because they may hinder a blessing from coming our way for a while.

Jesus gives us authority by the power in his name to break those curses. If I feel like I am being picked on, spiritually, I can undo it in a moment, in Jesus' Name and command myself to line up with the word of God. (For example, a stabbing pain in my heel, or head, something that happens for no apparent reason.)

Also, just because my relative may have a disease, doesn't mean I have to have it, so I will disagree with whoever announces it, or bind it in Jesus' Name...."I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me."

I thought about this for a long time today. These are just thoughts and I don't have anything scriptural to back it up but perhaps generational curses have nothing to do with the sins of our ancestors but more to do with things that are passed on like diabetes, heart disease, mental illness, abuse, belief systems etc. I just have a hard time believing that God would hold us accountable for other's sins when we are washed by his blood. I'm not going to take any chances I am going to ask God to break any generational curses that I might be plagued with and my children, grandchildren. I thank God for my father's side of the family all Godly people as far as I know but my mom's has me a bit worried!LOL!

Dreamweaver, I agree with your last statement. I guess as I have studied (and really it has not been an extensive study to be honest) but as I have prayed about this subject and read, I believe that before the fall, Adam and Eve were perfect, as God made them to be this perfection of course included free will. Sometimes I also believe we think of perfection as it pertains to actions but God is also perfect scientifically, so their DNA code had to have been perfect as well, right? After the fall, we began to die for the first time. Well believe me I am no scientist, but it seems disease that leads to death often is due to a poor DNA structure. I feel the deterioration of this structure began due to the fall, and has continually, exponentially gotten worse, generation to generation. This may explain why diabetics have a high risk of having diabetic children ect. (or the sins of the fathers have been handed down, generation to generation). I do believe however, that God can deliever us from any of these inperfections, and illnesses, so truly Greater is He than is in us than he who is in the world. Please pray about this, as I have not quoted scripture to back it up and I am always careful not to misrepresent God and His plan.
