Anti-terror police patrol tube network
LONDON (Reuters) - Plain clothes anti-terrorist police with stop-and-search powers are patrolling London's underground rail network in the wake of last week's multiple bomb attacks on Madrid trains that killed 200 people.
Under new security guidelines, police will be able to frisk anyone they think is acting suspiciously.
Their deployment on Monday comes as a new poster campaign, urging passengers to be vigilant, was launched on the vast Underground system which carries some three million people a day.
The Madrid bombings have stoked fears that Britain's extensive rail network could be one of the next targets of extremists seeking to extract revenge for last year's U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
An extra 1,000 transport police officers have been diverted to help with the counter-terrorism effort in London.
London Underground passenger James Blomfield said he remained philosophical.
"I just accept that travelling on the tube at the moment is like playing a game of roulette," he told Reuters.
Another passenger, Lynne Game, added: "You have to put the worry to the back of your mind if you want to live a normal life."
Last September, police staged a mock attack on an underground train in the heart of London to test responses to a possible chemical or gas attack on the network.
Deputy Chief Constable (DCC) Andy Trotter of the British Transport Police said on Monday that while there had been no specific threat against London Underground or the capital's rail network, "the threat from terrorism remains very real, as the events in Madrid show".
"London is on a high level of alert and the London Underground system is controlled public space, with hundreds of staff at stations, extensive CCTV coverage and its own dedicated police resources," he told Reuters.
"A further, crucial element is the vigilance of customers. With three million travelling every day, they can provide millions of eyes and ears across the whole system."
Police said the latest initiative had been agreed before last Thursday's attack on the Spanish capital and was not connected, but with speculation mounting that al Qaeda was to blame, focus was turning to the risk to other Western cities.
"The despicable attacks in Madrid show only too clearly that the threat from terrorism remains very real," said Peter Clarke, head of the Metropolitan Police's Anti-Terrorist Branch.
"Public vigilance is vital at all times, not only when travelling on the Tube or rail network."

Lord i pray for the country, my country where i grew up, have mercy on this nation Lord.
I heard this on the BBC news yesterday too, Lord people have been advised to confront anyone they suspect of carrying explosives or acting suspiciously, but that is not a very sensible thing to do. They need Your wisdom and protection.
England needs a revival.....to sweep through the country, to bring people to their knees by the thousands. Send Your Spirit to breath on my country.
Bless Kensington Temple and Colin Dye with new inspiration and vision to reach throughout England, use the churches in London Lord.....lay evangelism upon their hearts and provide the workers Lord....the fields are ready for harvest, but the workers are few.....
I pray that the Tube system in and around London will be extensively guarded and searched every day, as often as it takes Lord, that You will appoint angels to protect innocent people travelling to and from work, visitors, families, everyone in and around London. Protect all forms of transport, all important buildings....protect our Queen and her family. Protect the government and bring wisdom and insight to our leaders.
It is a terrible thought that takes me back to the days when the IRA was leaving bombs in pubs and subways, i know how terrifying it is to be on a train and see an unattended bag. Or in the street an see a bag left in a shop doorway.
Lord protect London, protect England. Protect my family there, cover them with Your precious blood and keep them safe. In Jesus name.

Terror police probe 'bomb plot'

Anti-terrorism officers are continuing to question eight men as they investigate an alleged bomb plot.
The arrests in south-east England came as detectives seized half a ton of fertiliser, of a type used as explosive in the Bali and Istanbul bombings.
The suspects are thought to be at Paddington Green's high-security police station in London, and could be held up to a fortnight under anti-terror laws.
Aged from 17 to 32, the men are thought to be UK citizens of Pakistani descent.

Thankyou Lord for the discovery of this fertilizer. We continue to lift England up before You, the threat to London is still very real and menacing. Protect the subways , the tube, all places of touristic interest, museums, protect London with bands of angels Lord., Protect the people going about their daily business, protect my Mum and Nick, Wladislaw , my family in London and in England. Lead the police to any other suspicious actions and circumstances throughout the whole of England. Let the ones plotting to bomb or harm in any way, intending to kill, or maim, be quickly uncovered and dealt with .

Intelligence agents in the UK and US have foiled an alleged chemical bomb plot in Britain, the BBC has learnt.
The plot was believed to involve detonating a combination of explosive and a chemical called osmium tetroxide.
Experts say in gas form it could be lethal in a confined space.
The plotters were thought to be sympathetic to the aims of al-Qaeda and the intended target was believed to be British civilians, probably in London.
The chemical has a legitimate scientific use for research but is highly destructive to peoples' eyes, lungs and skin.

Anti-terror police arrest 10 in Manchester

LONDON (Reuters) - Police have arrested 10 people suspected of terrorism in raids in Manchester.
A police spokeswoman could not confirm reports that those arrested were linked to Islamic groups who may have been targeting a shopping centre in the city.
"Ten people in total have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism," a police statement said on Monday.
"We appreciate the public interest in this but are unable to provide more details at this stage."
Local media said the arrests were made during a raid on a property above a kebab restaurant near the city centre.
The Manchester raids came just three weeks after police arrested eight men in London and southeastern England and seized a cache of explosives on March 30 in Britain's biggest anti-terror operation since the September 11 attacks of 2001.
Britain, Washington's closest ally in the "war on terror" and in toppling Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, has long feared it could be a prime target for Islamic extremists.
With Europe already on a high state of alert after the Madrid train bombings in March, London's police chief has repeatedly said he believes an attack is inevitable.
A radical Muslim cleric said in a weekend interview with a Portuguese magazine that several Islamic militant groups in London were preparing attacks in Britain.
"It's inevitable. Because several (attacks) are being prepared by several groups," Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad told Lisbon's Publica magazine from London, where he is based.
One "very well organised" group in London calling itself al Qaeda Europe "has a great appeal for young Muslims", he said. "I know that they are ready to launch a big operation."
