Boy who prompted Amber Alert found safe in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - The search for a baby boy snatched from a shopping cart in an Ellensburg supermarket ended Sunday morning, when a police officer found the child and the woman believed to have taken him.
Eleven-month-old Larry Thornblade was found unharmed at a home in Spokane, about 150 miles east of Ellensburg, and temporarily turned over to Child Protective Services, said Sgt. Scott Willis of the Ellensburg Police Department.
A 37-year-old woman described as a friend of the child's mother was booked into Spokane County Jail for investigation of second-degree kidnapping; the boy's 23-year-old mother was arrested Saturday for investigation of custodial interference and simple assault, Willis said.
Investigators believe Thornblade's mother and her friend snuck up behind the boy's grandmother, who had taken him along with her to go grocery shopping, at a Safeway store around noon on Saturday.
As the friend whisked the boy away, Willis said, the child's mother stood in his grandmother's way to keep from going out into the parking lot.
An Amber Alert broadcast Saturday included a description of the car authorities believe drove away after the woman got inside with Thornblade: a white, 1991 four-door Oldsmobile Delta with the Washington license number 574-RXA.
Police staked out the Cheney home the car where was registered talked to a man, around 2 a.m. Sunday, who said he had dropped off a woman and a baby somewhere in Spokane, Willis said.
During a Sunday morning briefing at the Spokane Police Department, an officer said she recognized the names of the people involved in the incident, and found the boy and the 36-year-old woman at a home around 7 a.m., Willis said.
KING Television reported that police released the man they questioned in Cheney, believing that he was not aware he had been involved in a kidnapping.
Child Protective Services was holding Thornblade temporarily, until his father and grandmother -- with whom he has been living for several months -- could retrieve him.
Authorities did not immediately release the names of Thornblade's mother or the kidnapping suspect.
