Anyone interested in reading and discussing Dr. Laura Schlessinger's latest book, The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands ? I gobbled this book up and it taught me soooooo much about how I was blowing it with my husband, not knowing how to properly nurture and love him. I'd love to read it with others and hear what you think as well.

The book is on the bestseller list here in America, and is available for a reduced fee because of that at places like Barnes and Noble and Borders Books.

If you are interested, post here.

Thanks,

Erika

Dear PFR:
This is Jerry.
I am interested.
I saw her on tv the other night sounded interesting.

Have you read the book.
If so what did you think about it.

Hi Jerry!

Yes, I read the book and I really loved it. There are some things missing from a spiritual perspective, IMHO, but really good, straightforward advice and instruction pretty much across the board. It was a little less "ascerbic" than her other materials have come across to me, although maybe that is just the Lord making me more teachable, LOL.

She includes many, many letters from men who wrote in about the topic -- that was really wonderful to read that straight from the fellas. She also included many transcripts of calls in from both men and women (now that I think of it, there are also letters from women).

Maybe we could start this next week sometime to give people enough time to get the book?

Blessings,

Erika

Hi Priya,

I PM'd you back.

I wonder if it might be possible to get the book from Dr. Laura's website?

Here is the URL: http://www.drlaura.com/main/

Here is the page for the book in her online store: http://www.drlaurashop.com/product....b7eb950d4f8b143

And there is a hyperlink at the bottom of the page for customer service -- they could probably help you to know if they ship to India and how to convert the funds. It is a lot cheaper at Barnes and Noble though: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/bo...060520612&itm=1

There are some very good reviews and descriptions of the book there.

Hope that helps!

Blessings,

Erika

Hey Carrie-Ann,

Do you have amazon.com there? My best friend in Germany does, but I don't know about the Netherlands?

I still don't know if the above sites I mentioned do international orders or not -- does anyone else know?

We'll get this figured out though!

Blessings,

Erika

I just emailed Dr. Laura's customer service to ask how those in other countries than the U.S. can get the book. I'll let you all know what they say.

Okay, 50 posts in a row from me . . . sorry!

Just wanted to add:

Dr. Laura is not a Christian. She is a devout, practicing Jewish woman, and has a great deal of respect for those following Christianity as well. However, I want to be sure everyone understands this is NOT a Christian book, and it will have to be read with Christian discernment. There might be a few things in there you find rather shocking and not displaying of Christian values, however, I have read it and did find it to be very helpful to me in understanding what my husband needs from me, and how I was mistreating him in the past.

Dr. Laura is very anti-feminist movement, and tends to "say it as she sees it". She is typically very supportive of traditional Judeo-Christian values.

Just wanted to be sure everyone knew that before buying the book! I think you can read some samples from it on Amazon.com

I have not read that book but I have heard others refer to it positively.

I struggle with books of this nature because I don't know how much of what they are writing will apply to my husband.

I wish someone would write a book (in english) called "The care and feeding of a Serbian man in America." (Yes, of course, who would write such a book.)

The point I'm making is that some things are culturally sensitive. For example: I was reading "The Surrendered Wife" I am not really into the "submissive thing" (which may surprise some of you who might have taken comments I have made in a way I didn't really mean.) But I didn't want to be a "controlling wife" so I read that book. It was very very good. However, my husband saw the book and went ballistic. He ordered me to stop reading it. (And I thought it was funny in a way, but I "surrendered" to him and didn't read it and when he asked me later if I was still reading it, I told him, "No, Dearest, you said you didn't want me to, so I stopped." He just didn't get that he was being domineering and I was being submissive which is what he SAYS he doesn't want but in the end, probably does.) But for him "submissive" has a different connotation than what I think the book talks about. Just like "picking up" (as in "lets pick up the house") means something like "be my slave and grovel at my feet" when he translates what I say into his cultural language.

I will look at the book on Amazon.com and Christian Book distributors. If I can get it at a good rate, I'll order it. But I don't know if it will have information that will be useful in my situation.

It is hard enough trying to figure out the world of "Men" (growing up with no father or brothers), but dealing with a "foreign man" is much more difficult.

(For example, I really think that my husband sees absolutely nothing wrong with taking off for months away from me and not keeping in touch with me regularly. I think this is acceptable behavior in his culture. Although in America this is abandonment and thought of as very dishonorable behavior.)

Hi thornygrace,

I've read the book, and my guess is there will be things in there that do apply to your husband. Especially principles that you could translate culturally and then apply to him.

That is an awfully "tough road to hoe" having not only to figure out the world of men, but a man of a different culture. My best friend is of another culture and I know there have been things we both have to understand about the other that we would "just know" if we were of the same culture.

I'm excited you are going to read with us!

Edited to add that my dad was from another culture and I remember that being hard for my mom -- very different ideas about submission and the roles of husband and wife.

Hi Everybody --

When I posted this, I didn't think through how overwhelmed I might be right at the moment with the pending divorce during these next couple of weeks. I'm still definitely interested in doing this, but it might be awhile. I'm sorry . . .

Carrie-Ann and Priya -- I was unsuccessful in locating any overseas book dealers. PM or email me and we can talk about trying to get a book to each of you, okay? It may take me awhile though with all that is going on.

Blessings,

Erika

I felt led to by the book by Dobson" Love must be tough for marriage". And I can only buy one book about every other month with my finances the way they are. So it is good to wait on this.

I understood that Amazon.com mails overseas. But even some of the ones that sell used books through Amazon. com does ship overseas because I saw one that said that they would figure out the postage and email the person with the total.
