The Compassion of Jesus
If we are to successfully minister to Christians and win the lost to Christ, we must have the genuine, way down deep sincere love for the ones we seek to minister to. Not only must we possess it but we must demonstrate it as well.
Our Jesus was One who hated sin yet demonstrated His love and compassion for the sinner. This was a real love and compassion that people could immediately see and sense. This is the same compassion we must have. Jesus beheld the leaderless, tired, sick, and hungry multitudes, and He had compassion on them. He was genuinely moved and deeply touched.
Matthew 9:36
"But when he saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd."
So as a Shepherd, Jesus not only demonstrated His genuine Love for them, but He healed their sick.
Matthew 14: 14
"And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick."
Not only did He heal their sick but He saw they were hungry and in need of nourishment and He fed them.
Matthew 15: 32-37
32 "Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. 33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? 34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. 35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. 36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
Jesus was filled with compassion for a leper who wanted to be clean, and a widow who was grieving over the death of her son!
Mark 1:40-41
40 Then a leper came to Jesus, knelt in front of him and appealed to him, "If you want to, you can make me clean." 41 Jesus was filled with pity for him, and stretched out his hand and placed it on the leper, saying, "Of course I want to - be clean!"
Luke 7:11-17
11 Not long afterwards, Jesus went into a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd. 12 As they approached the city gate, it happened that some people were carrying out a dead man, the only son of his widowed mother. The usual crowd of fellow-townsmen was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry." 14 Then he walked up and put his hand on the bier while the bearers stood still. Then he said, "Young man, wake up!" 15 And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus handed him to his mother. 16 Everybody present was awe-struck and they praised God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us and God has turned his face towards his people." 17 And this report of him spread through the whole of Judea and the surrounding countryside.
And again He demonstrated His compassion on a father whose son was horribly possessed.
Mark 9:17-27
17 "A man from the crowd answered, "Master, I brought my son to you because he has a dumb spirit. 18 Wherever he is, it gets hold of him, throws him down on the ground and there he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth. It's simply wearing him out. I did speak to your disciples to get them to drive it out, but they hadn't the power to do it." 19 Jesus answered them, "Oh, what a faithless people you are! How long must I be with you, how long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me." 20 So they brought the boy to him, and as soon as the spirit saw Jesus, it convulsed the boy, who fell to the ground and writhed there, foaming at the mouth. 21 "How long has he been like this?" Jesus asked the father. "Ever since he was a child," he replied. 22 "Again and again it has thrown him into the fire or into water to finish him off. But if you can do anything, please take pity on us and help us." 23 "If you can do anything!" retorted Jesus. "Everything is possible to the man who believes." 24 "I do believe," the boy's father burst out. "Help me to believe more! 25 "When Jesus noticed that a crowd was rapidly gathering, he spoke sharply to the evil spirit, with the words, "I command you, deaf and dumb spirit, come out of this boy, and never go into him again!" 26 The spirit gave a loud scream and after a dreadful convulsion left him. The boy lay there like a corpse, so that most of the bystanders said, "He is dead." 27 But Jesus grasped his hands and lifted him up, and then he stood on his own feet.
