What are your opinions of The Message version of the Bible? I find this version easy to read and understand, which in turn means that I actually want to read the Bible. A friend of mine told me that this version is junk. I am going to keep reading it no matter what she says, because I enjoy it, and it makes sense to me. Sort of like The Bible for Dummies.

I was just wondering what your opinions of The Message are, and if anyone else thinks it is junk.

Thanks!

Well, I also think that this bible even though it might be fun to read is a very poor translation and actually it cannot be called God's word anymore. I think the KJV is the only good bible, the rest is manipulated and watered down. There are verses in the bible where every words matters and a bad or a changed translation can influence the whole meaning of a sentence, this is why accuracy is helpful.

How can you be so sure? Do you know the differences between the textus receptus and modern bible versions? do you know it or are you talking about something you have no clue of? do you know how Jesus is systematically disrated? I think you should research a bit and compare bible versions cause when it comes to important verses the modern versions have a different meaning in most cases.Sometimes it's just 1 missing word or 1 changed word but it makes a huge difference.

KJV

John 6:47

47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

NIV
John 6:47

47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

KJV

John 6:69

69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

NIV

John 6:69

69We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

KJV

Romans 14:10

But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

NIV

Romans 14:10

10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat.

KJV
Ephesians 3:9

9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

NIV

Ephesians 3:9

9and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.

KJV

1.John 4:3

3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, where of ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

NIV

1.John 4:3

3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

faith,
I think the Message is a good read. It is there to give a new believer an insight into what the Bible says in the hopes that it will encourage them to seek God's word more fully. Eugene Peterson, the author, is a pastor who was troubled to see how few people in his congregation actually read the Bible. He spent years putting together something that would make sense from a start to finish perspective. Very few people, even Christians, realize that the Bible is one fluid text that when read as a whole forms one perfect picture of redemption.
That is the purpose of the Message.
I would encourage you to read other texts as well and when you feel led to really study God's word acquire a Bible encyclopedia like Strong's. I, personally, have found Halleys quite exhaustive.
God's word is incredible. There is more depths to it than we can ever grasp and it never gets old.
Above all else I would encourage you to memorize scripture. Put God's word on your heart. It builds our faith, gives us the ability to fight the Advisary (hense Anointed's reference to the sword), and puts power into our prayers.
To answer your question, I wouldn't dismiss the Message altogether, but I would use it for it's intended purpose.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Tammie.

I have two NIV versions, and have had them for YEARS. I just get confused, and discouraged. The Message I have found is good to get the basic gist of what it is about, but for study purposes, the Strongs Concordance and NIV or NKJ is the best. I am not even going to worry about study right now. I just want to get in His presence and stay there for a while, and if I understand better what He is saying, I have a better chance.

Faith,

Much has been written that I agree with, so all I can offer is that it is important to read the version that speaks best to you and that you are able to understand and in essence grow from and with.

Continue to study, memorize scriptures, get in a bible study group (if not already) and use the bible that makes God's word come alive for you and that you will be able to use/draw from during attacks.

Lets look at it this way when we all started out as Christians we had a real hard time understanding his word, till we began to grow in his spirit from him teaching us, through the years the word of God has become so much more clearer to me in that it is the Holy Spirit touching my spirit and turning on the switch to my spiritual eyes to see his truth and revelation in his word..so as an encouragement keep reading the word of God as it is and eventually if you are willing to be taught by the Holy Spirit he will show you things as never before in his word after all why would we try to figure it out in are minds when it was inspired by the Holy Spirit himself and God-breathed not by mens minds but by his spirit..God Bless..

But the real question is wether such poor bible versions can still be considered the word of God....
When I say something to you and you quote me, then you're saying exactly what I said. But when you change my words and then quote me then you're no longer saying what I said but you're only saying something which has a similar meaning.

We only have the jist of what God even said because the versions we read are in English and God's word was originally written in Aramaic and Greek. Some words in those languages don't translate perfectly and, therefore, they are written as close as possible in English. For instance, there are several words for love in those languages, but we only have one (side note: how many are there in German). How can you convey the depth of a word when you only have one way to express it?
When it comes to the Bible you depend on the Holy Spirit and trust that God's truth is being revealed to you.
I will not have a "KJV vs every other translation" debate with you. We've already been down that road, but I will try to point out the flaw in your reasoning with love and respect.
I hope I have done so.

your sister,
~Tammie

Hi Tammie,
I know what you mean it's not about the translation of a single word.
It's about correctness, accuracy and it is about Jesus. Please take a look at my KJV/NIV comparison, I cannot believe you don't see what's going on here.

Well,

I didn't mean to start a full blown argument. I just wanted to know what people thought about The Message version. I prayed about it, and asked a friend of mine, and read these posts and decided the New Living Translation was better. It is still easy to read, but not as slangy as The Message.

Even thought The King James Version and NKJ are probably more accurate and better, if I don't understand what they are saying, what good are they going to do? I am going to stick with what works for me and draws me closer to the Lord. When I get a better grasp, then maybe I will move on to NKJ.

Thanks for all of your help everyone!
