"L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem"

Apples and Honey

During Rosh Hashanah, it is traditional to eat apples dipped in honey, to symbolize our hopes for a "sweet" new year. The apple is dipped in honey, the blessing for eating tree fruits is recited, the apple is tasted, and then the apples and honey prayer is recited.

Barukh atah Adonai, Elohaynu, melekh ha-olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, king of the universe

borei p’riy ha-eitz. (Amein)
who creates the fruit of the tree. (Amen)

Y'hee ratzon mee-l'fanekha, Adonai Elohaynu v'elohey avoteynu
May it be Your will, Lord our God and God of our ancestors

sh'tichadeish aleinu shanah tovah um'tuqah.
that you renew for us a good and sweet year.

--------------------------

The common greeting at this time is L'shanah tovah ("for a good year"). This is a shortening of "L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem" (or to women, "L'shanah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi"), which means "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year."

Judaism has several different "new years," a concept which may seem strange at first, but think of it this way: the American "new year" starts in January, but the new "school year" starts in September, and many businesses have "fiscal years" that start at various times of the year.

In Judaism, Nissan 1 is the new year for the purpose of counting the reign of kings and months on the calendar, Elul 1 (in August) is the new year for the tithing of animals, Shevat 15 (in February) is the new year for trees (determining when first fruits can be eaten, etc.), and Tishri 1 (Rosh Hashanah) is the new year for years (when we increase the year number. Sabbatical and Jubilee years begin at this time). (copied from a Judaism 101 site )

Maybe I can start my year over, then. At the first of the year, the Lord told me it was as we focused on HIM, not on the situation, not on the problem, that we would see the answers roll in. I spent too much time focusing on the problem..... I just said to Him the other day that I didn't do so well on staying focused on Him, of just seeking Him, so I wished for the rest of the year I could do what He told me at the first of 2004. That would give me three months to get totally focused on Him and just seek Him and get in His glory. No more praying the problem, just finding HIM and HE is The Answer to the problem.... hallelujah! I declare this the beginning of my Near Year!!!
