Another Pakistani Christian Pastor Kidnapped and Beaten
by Compass Direct

ISTANBUL, September 28 (Compass) -- A Protestant pastor in the northern part of Pakistan’s Sindh province is recovering slowly after being kidnapped, drugged and beaten severely two weeks ago by bearded assailants. The Muslim attackers held their hostage for two days before dumping him along a road nearly 600 miles away.

His Muslim captors told Pastor Yousaf Masih, 33, that they were taking revenge for the United States’ military presence in the country and ordered him to stop “praying for Muslims” in his Baptist church in Jacobabad.

The Baptist minister was abducted off a back street near his home after dark on Sunday evening, September 12. Walking home from a worship service, Masih was confronted by a bearded man who held a revolver to his side, warning, “If you try to resist me, I will shoot you and your wife and children.”

With the help of another accomplice, the man forced Masih into a red car parked along a nearby main street. Although the men spoke Urdu with Masih, he said they spoke with each other in Pashto, the language of the tribal Pathans living in southern Afghanistan and the northwest territories of Pakistan.

Although Masih was blindfolded, he understood from the shouts of transport hawkers along the way that they were driving through Sukkur. “After this they turned left [north], but then the car turned many ways, so I had no knowledge where I was being taken,” Masih told Compass by telephone today from Jacobabad.

When the car stopped, Masih said he was taken into a room where his head was shaved, and his shirt and trousers exchanged for traditional “shalvar kamiz” clothing. “Then they injected something into my right arm, and I went unconscious,” he said.

When he came back to his senses, he said he found himself in another room with an iron girder, where his captors suspended him by his legs, with his hands tied behind his back.

“They beat me on my legs and arms and back with long wooden sticks, shouting, ‘Christians are dogs!’” Masih said.

The pastor said his captors denounced the “Christian” American military for killing “many, many of our Muslim people,” complaining specifically about the U.S. contingent based at Shahbaz Air Force Base near Jacobabad.

“You are a Christian, and the Americans are also Christians. So tell the Americans to leave this airbase. Otherwise, we will continue to give trouble to you and other Christians,” they warned.

In addition, the kidnappers ordered Masih to stop praying for Muslims at his church. Masih said he told them that Hindus and Muslims and people from the Christian community all come to visit his home. “So I pray with them over their problems,” he said.

After the threats and extended thrashing, he was taken down and given some bread, lentils and water. Soon afterward he again fell unconscious, causing him to suspect they had drugged the food. He awoke in yet another room, where he was whipped on the soles of his feet and fed bread and vegetable curry.

When he next regained consciousness, he said he found himself lying on the ground outside, in the dark of night. “My whole body was seriously swollen, my feet and my legs, but I started to walk slowly,” he recalled. After he came to a small road, a Suzuki pickup came along and stopped for him.

Masih explained what had happened, asking where he was. The driver told him they were just a half-hour’s drive to Bannu City, some 600 miles north of Jacobabad. So he agreed to take the injured pastor to the Bannu Christian Hospital, where he was admitted shortly before midnight on September 14.

According to a medical report issued by the Bannu hospital, the effects of the heavy beatings caused serious swelling and damage to the pastor’s leg tissues and injury to his back. His blood pressure continues to drop as low as 100/40 at times, he said.

Masih was transferred on September 17 under police protection back to his home in Jacobabad, where the small government hospital continues to monitor his treatment. It has been recommended that he go to the Agha Khan Hospital in Karachi within the next week for an advanced medical checkup.

Although local police resisted initial attempts to file a report on his disappearance, an official First Information Report was registered on September 14. Since Masih’s return home, Jacobabad’s senior superintendent of police has insisted it was a faked kidnapping, and that his alleged captors were Christians, not Muslims. “You were not kidnapped,” Din Mohammed Baloch reportedly told Masih on September 23. “You were doing a drama.”

Married with a nine-year-old son and four-year-old daughter, Masih admitted, “My wife is really feeling very troubled now. So pray for us.”

Masih is the second Protestant pastor subjected to kidnapping and torture at the hands of Islamist extremists in Pakistan within the past four months. Pastor Wilson Fazal of the Pakistan Gospel Assembly in Quetta was abducted, shaved and beaten in May by a group of fanatic Muslims who tried to force him to convert to Islam. He escaped 40 hours later by jumping out of the jeep while being transported in the direction of the Afghan border.

Agreeing with Jerry and the prayers so wonderfully worded by akabezalel and oldrtnu
"Amen: the LORD do so. Blessed be the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen."
Dear God, please bring healing of body and emotions to Pastor Yousaf Masih, give comfort and strength to his family and church, and continue to minister to Pastor Wilson Fazal.
We pray for others suffering persecution in Pakistan and around the world. Please sustain them. Indeed we do pray that those who are persecuting can be, as Saul/Paul, drawn to the Saviour.
We pray "through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen."

(Jeremiah 28:6; Psalm 89:52; Hebrews 13:21)

KJV Matthew 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

KJV 1 Peter 3:12 ...The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers.... 13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.

KJV 1 Peter 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

KJV 2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.

KJV Hebrews 13:3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

KJV Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 36 ...I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 40 ...Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

A Letter Writing Ministry to Prisoners
You Can Make a Difference
Why write to them?
Your letters can make a difference! Mail sent to Christian prisoners, and to those who are being persecuted is very important for several reasons:
· Mail indicates clearly to the authorities that we are aware of that Christian’s situation — and we care! It chips away at the theory that the West is apathetic.
· Mail testifies of the love and unity found among followers of Jesus Christ throughout the world. This is especially true when letters are opened and censored. God may also choose to use them in the lives of those in authority — they too are people for whom Christ died!
· Mail is also evidence to our persecuted family that they are not forgotten. Communist oppressors and other persecutors of Christians constantly tell these prisoners that they are forgotten, that they are not loved, that no one knows about them. Through this isolation and loneliness the devil can prey upon their faith. When a prisoner receives a letter, whether they can read it or not, they know that someone cares.
· Mail can result in better treatment for a prisoner. The authorities are very sensitive about their image abroad. When they realize that outsiders are monitoring a prisoner’s situation, conditions may be improved.

Each card or letter that reaches a prisoner or family is a precious gift.
Gintautus Iesmantas spent six years in Soviet prison camps and a further five years in exile in Siberia, merely for writing and distributing Christian poems and articles. The prison officials limited the number of letters he received, yet he wrote:
“I feel that the senders exist, helping me to live and not to lose faith and hope. For five years now, your words and good wishes have kept me company on the difficult road of suffering. They have given me strength and the comfort that my sacrifice has not disappeared in the darkness of anonymity, and that there are people who are concerned for the fate of someone they don’t know.”

Here are other responses from the former Soviet Union:
“Each card that arrives from distant lands seems to say, ‘I come from your brothers and sisters who love the Lord as you do. And they love you, pray for you, have compassion for you and want you to remain faithful to your Redeemer and Lifegiver.’ I hold each letter with a sense of awe…” — Neonila Antonova
“During my eight years of imprisonment I received 9,546 letters!…They were a tremendous source of encouragement. They gave me new life and hope…Those letters are probably the only earthly treasure which I would like to take to heaven with me…” — Yakov Skorniakov
“I praise my Saviour for His great love, and I want to thank you, my dear friends. How great is your ministry! How endless your care and love! How precious your prayers and letters!…I thank God for hearing the cries of His people all over the world on behalf of each prisoner, orphan and widow…” — Anton Nazarevich
YOU are ‘DOING TIME FOR GOD’
by taking time to write and minister to those who need help and encouragement, while they are ‘DOING TIME FOR GOD’ in prison for their faith in Christ their Lord!

Writing to Prisoners
May I write in English?
Yes, write in English, but please watch your penmanship. Your note must be legible to be translated. Many people study English, so there will often be someone to translate your letter.
What do I write?
Send letters, notes, postcards even bookmarks. Attractive Christian greeting cards are especially cherished. Express your Christian love and mention you are praying (then do!). Include a Bible verse, quote it and please give the reference. Be careful in writing about politics or criticizing their government. If you want to make your letter even more personal and special, you may want to include a snapshot of yourself, your family or your prayer group.
We do not believe it to be dangerous to put your name and address on correspondence.
What if I don’t get an answer?
Don’t expect an answer. Most of your letters reach their destination, but it is difficult to reply. For many families in these restricted lands, the cost of a letter back to you may be equal to a day’s wage.
Letters sent to Christian prisoners are occasionally returned unopened. Sometimes, authorities refuse to give a prisoner their mail in order to make them feel isolated. In other cases, the prisoner may have been moved to a different camp and their mail is not forwarded. Keep writing. Don’t be discouraged! Your letters are significant. They are a quiet and loving gift to your brothers and sisters. You will rejoice together when we meet in Heaven.

Writing to Government Officials
Letters and petitions show officials that there are people who know and care what happens to each prisoner. Their conditions may be improved as a result. If the authorities think no one cares, the Christian may be imprisoned with dangerous criminals, abused, deprived of food, or denied rights to their mail, parcels and visits.
Don’t underestimate the power of your letter.
What do I say?
Be brief.
Be polite. You are representing Jesus Christ.
Be careful in writing about politics or criticizing their government, other than human rights abuses.
State a general concern for persecuted believers.
State a specific concern for one or more prisoners.
(a) Where possible, give full name and home town of prisoner(s).
(b) Tell why you are concerned (perhaps they have been beaten).
(c) Tell what you would like to see done (released, given medical treatment, etc.).
Remember to thank them in advance for their positive actions.

CHINESE PERSECUTION ASSAILED: Capitol Hill hearing focuses on religious oppression in the Communist nation.

by Keith Peters, Washington, D.C., correspondent

Advocates for Chinese Christians went to Capitol Hill on Thursday looking for help to counteract religious persecution in China, which has been growing in severity over the last few years.

Bob Fu, president of the China Aid Association, said the sheer numbers behind the persecution are sobering.

"Over 20,000 members of underground religious groups have been arrested, detained, kidnapped or under house arrest," he said. "Hundreds of churches and homes have been destroyed. Many of the arrested believers, especially women, were tortured, raped, or sexually abused during their interrogations."

But while the campaign against underground churches continues throughout China, there are some who excuse the mistreatment. Professor Pitman Potter of the University of British Columbia said the West should accept the Communist country's perspectives on social regulation.

"It's in the enforcement of those rules that China should be invited to improve its compliance," he said, "rather than saying we have a set of standards here in Washington or in Ottawa or elsewhere."

That suggestion doesn't sit well with U.S. Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa.

"It is unconscionable to hold anyone in prison anywhere in the world for religious faith," he said. "It is only conscionable to release such prisoners and to clear their records."

There is no other position, he said, a civilized human being can take.

Father, in Jesus' Name we pray for Your will over any human who will hurt another human being. Like You did Saul, we ask You to turn them around and make them warriors for You.

Lord, for the men, women and children who have been hurt and killed, we ask for vengeance. Since this return belongs to You, we will only stand where You command us to, and have mercy....give us ears to hear and eyes to see...so we can move to the place You are leading us to go.

Lord, bless these victims (warriors of the kingdom) and their families with joy in the place of grief and mourning. Give them all divine protection for the rest of their lives in You.

In Jesus' Name we ask these things and we give You thanks....Amen.

Lord, have mercy on the souls of those who beat this man. I pray that his Christian witness will minister to them. Let it have a great impact. Lead these Muslim's to repentence.

Father, protect Masih from any further persecution. Send angels to protect him. Surround him by a mighty angel guard. I pray that he will be directed by Your Holy Spirit in every move he makes, so he will be directed away from danger.

Lord, I pray You will heal his body, and give him the ability to preach for you again.

May his family keep serving You and not give up because of the persecution. Teach these children that anything they go through for You can not compare to the Glory they will one day know. Let them be willing to endure for You, whatever they may have to go through. Let their father's strong faith teach them this lesson.

Let mighty things happen in this for the furthering of Your Gospel. Use this all for Your glory.

Release legions of angels all over the world, to go to every place where Christians are persecuted.... Let there be a renewed zeal on the part of Your children to pray for the persecuted church. As we do, let angels be sent on assignment, that far less are persecuted and that many more are protected.

I praise You for this, in Jesus Name, amen.

PAKISTAN: CHURCH ATTACKED

Yet another church in Pakistan has been attacked, bringing the total to five in the last two months.

Church leaders have appealed for greater security for Pakistani Christians after a mob set fire to a church in the village of Mian Channu in Punjab, some 100km east of Multan, on the night of March 30. Local residents quickly extinguished the fire but some of the church furnishings were destroyed, according to The Voice of the Martyrs Canada.

Although no-one was injured, the church pastor, Rev Nathaniel Barkat, said his congregation were ‘shaken’ by the attack. Local police have said that they believe the motive might have been an attempt by Islamist militants to stir up conflict between Christians and Muslims in the area.

Ejaz Ghauri, chairman of the Human Development Network, condemned the attack and accused the authorities of not intervening sufficiently to protect minorities from religious violence.

In February and March this year, attacks were made on churches in the following areas: Kanwanlit, Punjab province; Sukkur in Sindh province; and Sarghoda in Punjab. AsiaNews reports that a well-known Christian singer A. Nayyar was recently attacked in Lahore and forced to recite the Salama-Tayyaba, the Islamic profession of faith.

Pray for the congregations of the five churches attacked in recent months. Pray that they will not allow fear or the desire for retribution to overtake them.

Pray that the Pakistani government would heed calls for greater protection for Pakistan’s religious minorities, including Christians.

INDIA
(Compass Direct)
In remanding the president of the Emmanuel Mission International (EMI) to judicial custody until April 10th, a Rajasthan court ordered the administration to keep the Rev. Dr. Samuel Thomas in a cell separate from Hindu extremist inmates allegedly plotting to assault him. Thomas' attorney, Mohammad Akram, told Compass he had pleaded in court his client be given a cell separate from jailed militants accused of violence against Christians. EMI officials said other Hindu extremists were hatching a conspiracy to falsely implicate Thomas for illegal trade in drugs. A delegation from the All India Christian Council has submitted a report to the prime minister, concluding that Rajasthan state is harassing Christians due to pressure from the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). During a three-day tour of the Kota area, the delegation also met Samuel Thomas in police custody. Thomas told the delegation he had not been mistreated, but he was worried about EMI's orphanage and the hospital. At the hospital the delegation found patients had not received adequate care because of police presence and threats that if anyone were treated, staff members would be arrested and the facility closed down.

Pray God will continue to protect Dr. Thomas from physical harm. Pray those who never sought the Lord will see Jesus in Dr. Thomas and turn to Him. Pray God will move in power to protect and maintain the orphanage and hospital founded by Dr. Thomas' father.

A Hindu extremist group planning centenary celebrations in April hopes to "reconvert" as many as 10,000 tribal Christians to Hinduism during the event. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will hold the Dharma Jogna in Orissa, India, on April 8th – 10th. Given the recent trend of mass "reconversion" ceremonies organized by the RSS and its sister organization, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP or World Hindu Council), Christian leaders fear many tribal people may be persuaded to reconvert against their will. "We are extremely worried," said the Rev. Dandia Basi Hrudaya, secretary of the Orissa chapter of the All India Christian Council (AICC). "The AICC and other Christian leaders are meeting this week to finalize plans to protect the tribals during this event."

Pray the Lord of all creation will strengthen the faith of the tribal people with supernatural courage to stand up for Jesus. Pray the Holy Spirit will send a spirit of confusion into the minds of the Hindu extremists. Pray the plans of the organizers of this event will backfire and more Hindus will seek to know Christ.

INCARCERATED FOR CHRIST
All over the world, Christians are persecuted for their faith. Some are jailed for meeting in non-state-sanctioned house churches; some are beaten because they dare to express faith in Jesus Christ; some are beaten and killed when they refuse to renounce their faith in Christ.

On March 16, the president of Hopegivers International of India, Samuel Thomas, a Liberty University alumnus and native of India, experienced firsthand the potential implication of his faith in Jesus Christ when he was met by 12 armed men claiming to be policemen, handcuffed and arrested. He remains in custody.

Since Samuel’s arrest, appeals for his release on bail have been repeatedly delayed or denied by local authorities in Kota, Rajasthan. Moreover, he was originally imprisoned in the same cell with multiple members of the very militant group that has been threatening his and his father’s lives.

Compass Direct now reports that a court in Rajasthan has ordered the safekeeping of Samuel in a cell separate from the Hindu extremists who were plotting to assault or kill him. This action was in response to pressure from the All India Christian Council and the New Delhi Human Rights Commission.

Samuel and his father, Bishop M.A. Thomas, run the Hopegivers International children’s charity. The charity is responsible for saving thousands of children from the streets of New Delhi and other cities. M.A. Thomas has been in hiding for some time because he has also been targeted by the extremists, with one anti-Christian militant offering a bounty of $26,000 for his head.

Prior to Samuel’s arrest, two other Hopegivers officials were arrested and held for weeks without charge.

Since Samuel’s arrest, an international prayer chain has been initiated, with Christians joining together to pray for this man’s release.

“Pray for our ongoing efforts to negotiate the release of Dr. Thomas,” said Hopegivers Executive Director Michael Glenn. “His leadership is urgently needed at the Hope Home orphanages and hospital we support in Kota. The longer this harassment goes on, the more the welfare of the children and patients will suffer.”

Since his arrest several weeks ago, lawyers for the Emmanuel Mission International (EMI) have been questioning the legitimacy of the vague charges filed against Samuel for causing “communal disharmony.” EMI is the indigenous partner in India for Hopegivers International. His arrest and the ongoing threats targeting EMI are bringing worldwide condemnation from advocates of human rights.

“This is a blatant denial of freedom of speech and religion,” said Mr. Glenn, “and goes against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the Indian constitution.”

The prayer chain has spread to the Liberty University campus, where hundreds of students have formed a prayer vigil. On the tenth day of Samuel’s imprisonment, a large group of these student intercessors gathered for prayer to ask God’s protection on His servant. This prayer vigil lasted several hours and included dozens of students who have participated in Liberty sponsored missions campaigns in South Asia.

Samuel Thomas’ recent arrest and the fugitive status assigned to his father are just two recent examples of the ever increasing and targeted attack on Christians in Southeast Asia.

Liberty University has joined with Hopegivers International in calling for increased awareness and prayer for those enduring this level of persecution in the least-reached places on our planet.

I urge my readers to join with us to pray specifically for Bishop M.A. Thomas and Dr. Samuel Thomas. These dear men of faith are paying a steep price for their relationship with Jesus Christ.

I am sure, however, that, like the Apostle Paul, each man would say with the Apostle Paul who said in his Epistle to the Philippians (1:29-30): “For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me” (NKJV).

PAKISTAN
(VOM sources)
VOM contacts in Pakistan reported on April 8th that Pakistani Christian, Parvez Masih, who was arrested and jailed under false blasphemy charges five years ago in April 2001, was released. After years of inhumane treatment, threats, beatings and trials, the headmaster of a private Christian middle school was found not guilty of violating Law 295c (blaspheming the prophet Mohammed). When Parvez Masih's Iqbal Memorial School (comprised of 25 Christian and 125 Muslim students in 2004) was gaining influence in a village near Lahore early in 2001, the jealousy of a Muslim group running a rival school was roused. Shortly thereafter, some of Parvez's students asked him if it was true Mohammed had a 9-year-old wife. Parvez graciously mentioned her name, "Aisha," while telling them to learn more about her from their religious leaders. Based on the testimonies of two of the questioning boys, Parvez was arrested on April 1, 2001, and accused of blaspheming Mohammed under Law 295c. He was taken to a nearby river and told to deny his faith in Jesus at gunpoint on this date, but he would not.

Give thanks and praise to God for Parvez's release. Pray our loving and powerful Father will protect him from any attacks from disgruntled Muslims. Pray publicity concerning this case will cause many moderate Muslims to question their faith.

The Rajasthan state assembly is considering a bill approved in principle that would prohibit "forced or fraudulent" conversions. Christian groups fear Hindu elements will use this against people who have legitimately decided to follow Christ. In other states in India, government officials and religious groups have used such legislation to curb voluntary, legal conversions. The bill was approved in principle on March 24th, but has not been adopted yet as law. In a press release, the All India Christian Council said the Rajasthan bill would be "a stick used to harass minorities in a state where they already feel insecure."

Pray God will protect His followers and grow His Kingdom in spite of any political moves to hinder the growth of Christianity. Pray Christians will remain loving witnesses of the One who died for all. Pray God will soften the hearts and open the minds of Hindus who are under the control of the enemy.

CAA learned an anonymous party has submitted a petition on behalf of Pastor Gong Shengliang to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Meanwhile, Pastor Gong's family members and legal representatives filed an appeal for medical parole due to the pastor's poor health. Pastor Gong, imprisoned since 2001 for his religious beliefs, is an evangelical Christian pastor and founder of the South China Church. He was falsely charged with rape, but every woman whom the government cited as accusing him has recanted the accusations, saying they were made under threat of torture.

Pray God will use these petitions to secure Pastor Gong's release. Pray Jesus will comfort this faithful believer and touch his body with His healing hand. Pray the Lord will move in the hearts of Chinese authorities, drawing them into a relationship with Christ.

Remember China's Persecuted

Today as Chinese President Hu is greeted by the White House, I hope you will take a few moments to "remember the prisoners" and pray for the persecuted church in China.

"Hostility towards Christianity is deeply embedded in China's history," writes author Doug Bandow for the next CFI Persecution Alert.

"A year ago one woman was beaten to death by police after distributing Bibles. The authorities target home churches. Last fall a church pastor and his relatives were found guilty of 'illegal business practices' for operating a church," writes Bandow.

Observes the State Department: "In some areas, security officials used threats, demolition of unregistered property, extortion, interrogation, detention, and at times beatings and torture to harass leaders of unauthorized groups and their followers."

Right now--in China--many Christian leaders are in prison.

Tragically, in spite of all our "free trade," the persecution against Protestant house churches in China has intensified. According to reliable reports by China Aid Association and others, from February to December 2005, at least 1317 confirmed arrests of house church pastors, leaders, and believers has occurred in over twenty provinces in China.

CAA confirmed reports through victims own testimonies showing inhumane torture against the arrested believers including coercion of evidence through drugging and other extremely abusive methods by the interrogators from both Chinese Public Security officers and State Security agents....

Pray for the persecuted church in China today. Pray for President Bush and for President Hu.

Bush, Hu Pledge Cooperation, Don't Get Far

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush and Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged cooperation in reining in the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea and resolving troubling trade disputes of their own Thursday, but they made little measurable headway in a pomp-filled summit....In a half-day of talks, the watchwords were candor and discussion - not agreement and announcement. The discussions touched on American concerns about Beijing's human rights record....

On April 9th, a Muslim community group called Majlis Taklim entered the premises of a Christian social institution in West Java, Indonesia, demanding its closure for the fifth time this year. The Apostolic Nation Building Foundation (ABB) operates from a residential building in West Bekasi district, West Java. Around 70 Majlis Taklim members came to the ABB headquarters on April 9th, and told the foundation to cease all activities, accusing them of running an illegal church and trying to "Christianize" the community. The staff immediately called the police who arrived and monitored the situation. There was no violence. Majlis Taklim coordinator, Radesman Saragih, said church members should take the warning seriously or be prepared to face unspecified negative consequences.

Pray members of the ABB will stand firm in their faith and their witness of Jesus' love for His enemies. Pray the calm responses to the demands for closing this institution will convince Muslims that Christians are not harming anyone. Give thanks to God there has been no violence in these confrontations.

NEPAL
(Gospel For Asia)
The seven opposition parties that have been demonstrating against the King of Nepal have called off their nationwide strike after the king promised to re-open parliament and form a democratic government. All eyes are now on the Maoist rebels who have rejected the agreement. The Himalayan kingdom had descended into widespread violence as the king tried to keep control after the nation turned against him for taking direct control of the government and dissolving parliament. The Gospel for Asia (GFA) office in Kathmandu has been temporarily closed because of the situation, and native missionary outreach work has been seriously affected. Narayan Sharma, GFA's leader in Nepal, reported hundreds of people have been injured and a few have already died of bullet wounds. Some are still in critical condition in hospitals.

Pray that in this time of unrest, the Holy Spirit will move in miraculous power to bring political stability to Nepal as well as opportunities for the Good News to be shared with many. Pray God will protect and strengthen Brother Narayan for whatever the future holds. Pray Christians will be true peacemakers and show themselves as sons of God.

The latest attack on the Rt. Rev. Ali Buba Lamido, 47-year-old Anglican Bishop of Wusasa diocese in Kaduna state, began as the past year's previous three did: armed men, whom he believes were Muslim militants, asked the guards at his home where he was, announcing they were going to kill him. This time, on March 10th, a guest of one of his guards was shot dead. The guard and another worker were seriously injured. The four attacks on his house since April 2005, have involved no attempted robbery. "It is difficult to believe it was not religiously motivated, because some bishops have been attacked and one priest was murdered in a similar way," he said. "And the killers never stole anything from their houses."

Pray God will continue to protect Bishop Lamido. Pray he will have the forgiving spirit of Christ toward the attackers and will encourage the Christian community to pray for their enemies. Pray the Holy Spirit will overcome the spirit of violence controlling the Muslims in Nigeria.

NORTH KOREA
(ASSIST News Service)
In an unprecedented move, family and activists have called upon the international community to intervene to abort the execution of North Korean Mr. Son Jong Nam. According to a media release, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has joined with multiple agencies that protested recently outside the government complex in South Korea calling for "efforts to rescue Son Jong Nam, who has been sentenced to public execution." The appeal comes after Mr. Son's brother, Son Jong Hoon, received information via a relative. He reported: "My brother is sentenced to public execution, and even family members cannot visit him." Five North Korean defector organizations working for human rights in North Korea issued a joint statement on April 4th, urging for intervention to stop the planned execution. The joint agency statement reports Mr. Son (48) is imprisoned in the basement of the National Security Agency in Pyongyang and is "practically dead from horrible torture." CSW reports Mr. Son is accused of betraying his country and sharing information with South Koreans. "It is believed the charges are grounded in his visit to China where he met with his brother and spoke about life in North Korea and, possibly, in his connection to Christianity." The CSW report continues: "In May 2004, Mr. Son was able to meet his brother in China and return to North Korea. However, the individual in Musan who helped him travel to China informed on him to the Musan National Security Agency." North Korea's human rights record is ranked amongst the very worst in the world, CSW says.

Pray God will protect Son Jong Nam and his life will be spared. Pray Christians in North Korea will find comfort and strength as they keep their eyes on Jesus. Pray the Holy Spirit will move in the hearts of the authorities to bring them to repentance and a need for forgiveness through the blood of Jesus.

The Federal Court granted permission April 13th, to Lina Joy, a Malaysian Muslim convert to Christianity, to appeal the government's refusal to remove her Muslim status from her identity card. The ground-breaking decision came after lower courts--the High Court and the Court of Appeal--repeatedly dismissed her application. Besides religious rights for Joy, at issue is whether Islamic courts have the sole right to handle cases of Muslims who leave their religion. According to Malaysian lawyers, the sharia court has never granted permission for a Malaysian Muslim to convert from Islam. Conversion out of Islam ("apostasy") can be punishable by fine or imprisonment.

Give thanks to God that Lina Joy may now appeal the decision. Pray she will finally be allowed to remove the Muslim status from her identity card. Pray God will use this case to break the power of Islamic courts in Malaysia.

India: Girls Sacrificed To Tradition
Former Religious Prostitutes Help Those Still Trapped

World Vision writer Dean Owen headed to Kudligi in southern India to take a look at efforts to end an ignoble tradition.
"I had no idea what I was getting into."
Those nine words, translated from Hindi, reverberated across the darkened room and lingered. They represented anger, remorse and defiance.
Twelve women sat on the floor at a drop-in counseling center and HIV-testing clinic. The woman in the bright pink and red sari spoke with uncommon candor while leading the discussion. The mid-afternoon sun, filtering through the broken, unwashed window, gave the darkened room a solemn feeling.
But Ningamma was anything but solemn. She wanted to express her frustration at being "married" at age 12 to a Hindu god and spending the next 20 years delivering sexual favors to men. She was a devadasi — a temple prostitute.
Her parents told her the devadasi marriage ceremony was just a religious ritual, but she quickly learned otherwise. Six months after the “wedding,” Ningamma was back in the temple, serving the first of countless men … and ultimately contracting HIV.
Today, she has much in common with the other women in the room. They are all former devadasi, all HIV-positive, all serving World Vision as peer counselors to current and former temple prostitutes. And they all have a common purpose: to end a tragic Hindu tradition that began centuries ago.
Originally, devadasi were celibate dancing girls used in temple ceremonies. They entertained members of the ruling class. But sometime around the 6th Century, the practice of “dedicating” girls to Hindu gods became prevalent.
What was once a high-caste and socially honorable responsibility eventually degenerated into another variant of the world’s oldest profession. Despite being outlawed, the practice of ritualized prostitution continues, though to escape detection the "dedications" or "weddings" often occur in the middle of the night or in private homes. Humanitarian organizations estimate as many as 5,000 Indian girls become devadasi each year.
Ningamma relates that during her life as a devadasi it was impossible to say "no" to any man.
"My parents told me, 'If you stop, god will punish you,'" she says.
But even without such pressure it can be hard to persuade devadasi to seek alternate employment. Many make as much as 5000 rupees (about $120) for a day's work, which easily trumps the few dollars they could make as a seamstress.
So what gives Ningamma and the other former devadasi the strength or motivation to serve as peer counselors?
"We've learned lessons and we want to pass on what we have learned," she says, looking around the room as other women nod in agreement. "Why should girls be sacrificed and traumatized?"
World Vision in Kudligi, Karnataka State
Due to the prevalence of the devadasi tradition, social acceptance of sex work in Karnataka State is common and sexual transmission is the major cause of the spread of AIDS. This is especially true in the Bellary District of Kudligi town where World Vision’s Bellary project is based. The project cares for about 250 children made vulnerable by AIDS and helps about 1,000 adults — including devadasi and other HIV-sufferers — with job skills training, medical treatment and nutritional supplements. Counseling using peer educators is part of the service provided.

The Voice of the Martyrs VOM sources inside India report Pastor V.P. Paulouse’s church was raided by 15 mob members. While leading an Easter worship service and prayer meeting near Mangalore in Karnataka state, the church was raided by members reported to be from the Bajrang Dal (youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, or World Hindu Council). Entering the prayer hall with their faces covered, the extremists beat the pastor with cricket bats and also turned their assault on other believers, including his wife and daughters. The Hindu mob vandalized the hall’s furniture and equipment, worth more than 150,000 rupees ($3,500 U.S.). In the April 16th attack, Pastor Paulouse sustained numerous injuries and was admitted to the Mangala Hospital in Mangalore, where The Voice of the Martyrs provided for all of his medical expenses. The 15 assailants severely fractured his left hand and leg, which were set in casts. The 65-year-old pastor’s head and feet were also badly injured in the attack. Many wounds were found on his head, including one gash that required eight stitches to his forehead. Other injuries were also dressed at the hospital, including the extensive damage to his toes. The attackers beat several members of the congregation, specifically targeting his family, who sustained wounds from the violent rampage. The Bajrang Dal organized the attack because they do not want Christians in their area conducting prayer meetings. Pastor Paulouse’s ministry covers three villages in south Karnataka state. Despite Hindu opposition, he shepherds 60 believers in the region. He has been discharged from the hospital and his stitches were removed, but his doctor has told him to continue his bed rest. His cast remains on but should be removed sometime this month.

India has a racial, ethnic, religious and linguistic diversity that is staggering.
Religion: Hindu/other 79.83%, Muslim 12.50%, Christian 2.40%, Sikh 1.92%, Traditional ethnic 1.40%, Buddhist 0.80%, Jain 0.35%, non-Religious 0.55%, Baha’i 0.23%, and Parsee 0.02%
Ideological Influence: Hinduism
Head of State: President Abdul Kalam
In recent years several of India’s states have faced religious violence, as radical Hindus have become increasingly open in their conflict with Christians. Hindus who convert to Christianity are often rejected by their families and face poverty and ostracism. In the last two years, there have been reports of pastors and priests beaten, nuns harassed and raped, and other violence directed at Persecution: Christians in the states of Orissa and Gujarat. In 2005, more than 200 acts of violence against Christians occurred in the first four months of the year. Several pastors and evangelists were martyred, and radical Hindus brutally beat Christians arriving for a seminary graduation ceremony in Kota. In May 2004, an anti-conversion law in the state of Tamil Nadu was repealed after the Congress Party election victory. Anti-conversion laws are still on the books in five Indian states. They impose prison terms and hefty fines against anyone who converts Indians by force, fraud or allurement. Christians say their mission to serve the sick and needy is threatened because the anti-conversion laws have broad definitions of force and allurement. Under the laws, any gift or material benefit received by Christian converts can be considered an allurement to convert.
Missionary Opportunity: Indian mission agencies and church-based mission initiatives in south and northeast India and other areas have increased. However, there are still areas of the country and specific peoples in dire need of the gospel.

Imprisoned religious leader of South China Church, Gong Shengliang, was beaten again in Hong Shan prison, Wuhan, Hubei Province. On April 18, 2006, Pastor Gong's two sisters came to visit him and saw that the right side of Gong's face was swollen. Gong told them that March 21, 2006, another prisoner named Lei, who was assigned by prison officials to watch Gong day and night, beat him without cause. After the beating, Gong could not move his mouth for three days and suffered some hearing loss in his right ear. When Gong reported the beating to prison officials, they punished Pastor Gong by taking away two merit points he had earned during the last year. By contrast, the prison officers praised Lei. When Gong appealed to the leader of the prison to transfer Lei to another group, the prison leader refused and told Lei to apologize to "settle" the matter.
Pray God will protect Pastor Gong from more beatings. Pray the Holy Spirit will move in the hearts of the prison officials and other prisoners and they will come to know God as their loving Savior.

The administration of Rajasthan state's Kota district has leveled fresh charges of "exciting... disaffection towards the government of India" against Emmanuel Mission International (EMI) founder M.A. Thomas and his son, Dr. Samuel Thomas, the EMI president. Their attorney Mohammad Akram said he feared the additional charges could lead to the re-arrest of Samuel Thomas (released on bail under previous charges) and the re-issue of an arrest warrant against M.A. Thomas (granted anticipatory bail on previous charges). The new charge is based on the exclusion of Jammu and Kashmir states on a map of India shown on the website of Georgia-based Hopegivers International (which funds EMI). An offense under this law can lead to imprisonment for life.
Pray God will continue to bring strength, comfort and encouragement to the Thomas family.

With the encouragement of a local chief and the apparent backing of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, villagers in the north-central state of Madhya Pradesh gang-raped two Christian women Sunday, May 28 after the husband of one refused to deny Christ. The attack took place at 10 p.m. in Nadia village in Khargone district's Bhagwanpura block. A Christian source requesting anonymity said that villagers beat up Gokharya Barela, the husband of one of the victims, at 3 p.m. on Sunday. He took him forcibly to Sirvil village before the Panchayat (village court) and ordered him to reject Christianity. When he refused, the village leader, Pandya Patel, ordered Barela to drink wine. Villagers forced him to drink about half a bottle and warned him to move out of the village. The village leader Patel told the villagers they could rape Christian women because no one would save them. That night three men went to the house of Gokharya Barela, dragged his wife to nearby bushes and raped her. When Gokharya Barela and his Christian friend Gudia Gyansingh tried to save her, villagers beat them. Two other Hindu villagers went to the house of Christian Garsia Barela and dragged his wife onto the verandah and raped her. Superintendent of Police of Khargone district I.R.S. Borna confirmed that two women were raped by five men. "Our team is investigating," he said, "but no one has been arrested yet." The women were able to name the alleged rapists.
Pray these Christian women and their families will find comfort and strength as they keep their eyes on their Lord and Savior. Pray the other Christian villagers will remain strong in their faith in the face of threats and intimidation. Pray the attackers will be brought to justice.

Two Christians, Benjamin Dhunigana and John Dai, were arrested on January 8, 2006, in the western part of Bhutan. They have been imprisoned without trial for six months and now a sentence has been announced, though apparently without a trial. Dhunigana was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison and Dai was sentenced to three years. They were given 10 days to appeal to the court for bail and then to fight the case with the help of prominent lawyer. A VOM contact says that Dhunigana has been active in sharing the gospel all across Bhutan, and in particular in reaching Buddhist monks for Christ. On January 7th, he and Dai were traveling together in a van when they stopped and offered a ride to woman walking along the road. Dhunigana and Dai drove the woman to her home, and she insisted that they eat dinner with her family. They stayed to eat, and then told the woman they'd like to show her a movie, the JESUS film. She asked if she could invite her neighbors also, and the house was soon full of people watching the film about the life of Christ. VOM sources say it was the neighbors who reported the two Christian workers; Dhunigana and Dai were arrested the following day. Both men are married and have children; local Christians have promised to provide for the men's families as long as they are incarcerated.
Pray that the men will be a bold witness for Christ, even while they are in prison. Pray for justice for these two Bhutanese Christians.

In the state of Tamil Nadu, Christian leaders are expressing joy and relief over the recent repeal of an anti-conversion law. The law specifically listed Dalits (who make up approximately one fifth of Tamil Nadu's population) as one group restricted from evangelism efforts. The newly-formed Tamil Nadu legislature introduced a bill on May 29th to repeal the four-year-old "Prohibition of Forcible Conversion of Religion Act." It went unopposed to the floor and was passed May 31st. "Thank God for this welcome change," said Gospel for Asia president K.P. Yohannan. "The law had been a heavy burden on our state and district leaders."
A mob of Hindu extremists stormed a home prayer meeting in Mayapuri on June 4th and dragged Christians inside to a nearby temple to force them to bow before local gods. Police took 15 Christians into custody. Pastor Jagdish Bharti, 27, of the Bethel Fellowship Church, was charged with insulting religious beliefs "with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging" religious feelings. He was released June 6th on bail of 20,000 rupees (US$435). The other 14 Christians were released June 10th on bail after four hours of interrogation. "Police also created a scene at the police station, colluding with the fundamentalist elements and encouraging them to beat me up the next time I am caught evangelizing," said Pastor Bharti.
Pray God will protect Pastor Bharti and the members of his church from further harassment. Praise God for His favor toward the Dalits in Tamil Nadu. Pray the light of the love of Jesus will penetrate the spiritual darkness in India.

On June 25, CAA released a report listing the cases of persecution against Chinese house churches in different provinces in China from May 2005-May 2006. According to the report, in the past 12 months, at least 1,958 Chinese house church pastors and Christians in 15 provinces have been arrested. It is reported that police officers and religious affairs cadres conducting the raids have mistreated and tortured Christians. The report shows that Henan has been the worst province in persecution against house churches. In 11 raids between July 2005 and May 2006, 823 pastors and believers were arrested. Five American citizens were arrested as well. Many of those arrested were abused. After a raid on March 13, 2006 in Wen county, two arrested Christian ladies, 72 and 21, were forced to strip off their clothes during the interrogation. A disabled pastor, Li Gongshe, was severely beaten with one of his ribs broken.

Four men have been imprisoned in Moroni, Comoros for their "involvement in Christianity" according to a June 14 report from the Dutch office of Open Doors. Police have detained a former Muslim teenager, a married couple, a Muslim home owner and another Muslim who showed interest in Christianity. The arrests took place in May, following a complaint by the brother of a 15-year-old Christian who was angry his brother had abandoned Islam. During his interrogation, the Christian young man told police, "I am a follower of Jesus and study the Bible." Police forced him to reveal the location of the home where the Bible studies were held. They then arrested the Bible study leader and the owner of the home. While searching the residence, police found Bibles and other Christian literature, as well as a list containing the names of other Christians. When the Bible study leader's wife came to visit him in prison, she was also arrested. Two days later, she was sent to a women's prison where she was mistreated by guards and fellow prisoners. She has since been released but the four men have each been sentenced to three months in prison. It is reported that both the young convert and the Bible study leader have suffered mistreatment while in detention. In Comoros, a small three-island nation off the east coast of Africa, freedom of religion is guaranteed in the constitution, but the three church buildings in the nation are restricted to foreigners only.
Pray that the four men will remain faithful to Christ even as they suffer for His sake. Pray Jesus will give His special peace and comfort to the families of those arrested. Pray the Holy Spirit will overcome the spiritual darkness in Comoros and overwhelm the people with His love.

On Sunday, June 11, Hindu extremists dragged an independent pastor to a police station in Karnataka state, accusing him of converting Hindus to Christianity. They beat Pastor Sundar Rao severely both inside the police station and after he was released the following day. The pastor has since been hospitalized. The police were mute spectators to the beatings, according to a local Christian who requested anonymity. The extremists forced Rao to sign a piece of blank paper inside the police station. They also told him the land he had bought for a church would instead be used for constructing a (Hindu) temple.
In separate incident in Chattisgarh state on Sunday, June 18, Hindu extremists broke into Hossana church in Kosa Nala, Bhilai district. Extremists attacked Pastor David Raj and other church members, including his wife. The radical Hindus placed a rubber tire around the pastor's neck and attempted to burn him to death. After the mob beat them, Raj and his wife Ratna Jyoti were arrested and charged with attempted forced conversion and promoting enmity between religious groups. Local sources said two women were tricked into signing a statement accusing Raj and his wife of offering them cash and a motorcycle if they converted to Christianity.
Pray the Lord will heal Pastor Rao so quickly and completely that his recovery will be a witness to God's loving care. Pray God will not allow the land dedicated to His glory to be the site of a temple. Pray Pastor Raj and his wife will be released from prison and protected from further attacks. Pray Christians worldwide will pray for the Hindus in India who need to know their Savior.
SAUDI ARABIA

Armed with wooden clubs, ten Saudi Arabian police raided a private Christian worship meeting in the coastal city of Jeddah on June 9. Police arrested four East African citizens leading the service. More than 100 Eritreans, Ethiopians and Filipinos were gathered for worship in a home in Jeddah's Al-Rowaise district at 11 a.m. June 9. Startled worshippers brought chairs to seat the policemen, who sat and waited with clubs in hand. At the conclusion of the three-hour worship service, police arrested Ethiopians Mekbeb Telahun and Masai Wendewesen and Eritreans Fekre Gebremedhin and Dawit Uqbay. The two Ethiopian and two Eritrean Christians remain in the city's deportation jail. One Christian who spoke with them by telephone reported they were "doing fine, with okay morale." But he said he did not know how they were being treated.
Pray God will protect the four leaders who were arrested. Pray they will be able to boldly witness for Christ even while in custody. Pray the Holy Spirit will tear down the dark curtain of unbelief in Saudi Arabia and the bright light of Jesus will shine through.

From The Voice of the Martyrs
"Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him.
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his ways,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath.
Do not fret—it only causes harm.
For evildoers shall be cut off,
But those who wait on the LORD,
They shall inherit the earth."

Chinese officials have expressed "strong dissatisfaction" with a resolution passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on June 12th condemning rising persecution of religious believers in China. The resolution came after U.S. President George W. Bush invited three members of China's house-church network to the White House on May 11th--author Yu Jie, law professor W a n g Yi and legal scholar Li Baiguang. Yu, 33, attends Ark Church, an unregistered Protestant house church that has had to change locations six times to escape harassment. When Yu was asked to visit the White House, secret police in Beijing immediately called his wife, Liu Min, at her office in downtown Beijing. "They bluntly asked me to stop attending Ark Church, assuming that if I stopped going, the others would also scatter," she said. When she replied that she could not obey the order, the police said they would spread rumors to damage her husband's reputation. Police also advised her to divorce Yu.
Give thanks to God that information about the lack of religious freedom in China is being made public. Ask God to protect the house church representatives who were willing to suffer the consequences of reporting to President Bush. Pray all those who are threatened by the Chinese authorities will continue to stand up for Jesus.
ERITREA -- in Eastern Africa, bordering the Red Sea
(VOM Canada)
In the early morning of May 16th, 15 Christians escaped from a military training camp in Asabe, Eritrea and attempted to escape across the desert into neighboring Djibouti. According to a June 23rd report from Open Doors U.K., the men had been detained in metal shipping containers for the past two years because of their faith in Christ. Military police pursued the men when they were discovered missing. After two days, the bodies of five of them were found dead from exposure. At last report the other 10 had not been found and there was no indication if they were successful in crossing the border into Djibouti. If they remain in Eritrea, their lives are in grave danger.
Pray if there are survivors, the Lord will bring them safely to a place where they can recover from their ordeal. Pray the families of the deceased will find comfort in the fact that Christ is victorious over death, and their loved ones will be raised with Him. Continue to pray for the safe release of the many Christian prisoners in Eritrea.
INDIA
(VOM sources)
A group of junior doctors of Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh beat up a Dalit Christian laborer for several hours, cut his hair and forced him to drink his own urine in Gandhi Medical College hostel on June 21st. The police sources said the junior doctors started beating the Christian at 2:30 p.m. and continued the thrashing until night. The man somehow managed to free himself from the clutches of his tormentors and rushed to the nearest police station. The police are looking for the unknown persons on charges of wrongful confinement and physical abuse. In Bothli village in Durg district Sunday, June 25th, dozens of activists of a Hindu group, Dharam Sena, disrupted a weekly prayer meeting of Christians. As the prayer meeting was going on, more than a dozen Hindu fanatics surrounded the house, shouting slogans against Christians. They then barged into the house and started to attack all those present. Attacks on minorities, particularly on Christians, are increasing alarmingly. They are suffering a series of attacks and assaults by hardliner Hindu groups in many of the North and South Indian States.
Pray God will protect the Dalit Christians who are the poorest of the poor and give them peace and safety. Give thanks to God for the perseverance of the saints who remain faithful to Jesus in spite of severe persecution. Pray the Holy Spirit will come in glory and loving power to the whole country of India.

Reaching the Persecuted in Laos (July 5, 2006)
Remember the persecuted in Communist Laos...CFI helps these persecuted Christians with food, healthcare, medicine, and hope....
Reaching the Persecuted Children of Burma (July 4, 2006)
Christian Freedom International operates dozens of schools for persecuted Karen Christians inside the troubled war-zones of Burma. Sending supplies to each school is extremely difficult. It can takes days or weeks to hike-in from Thailand with much needed paper, pencils, books, food, and medicines to these very needy, isolated Karen villages in Burma. Courageous Karen men and women serve as teachers. They do their best in the most difficult of enviroments to teach children about Jesus Christ and basic education....
Urgent need for Bibles in Bangladesh (July 7, 2006)
Bangladesh is one of the poorest nations in the world. Christians make up less than two percent of the population in this mostly Muslim country. But Christianity is growing rapidly, and Muslims who convert to Christ face severe persecution. They need our prayers and help. Most new converts want to learn more about Jesus, but they don't have a Bible.
CFI School in Thailand (July 5, 2006)
....Persecuted Karen orphans from Burma had been praying for a home and school. We chose a site to build our school near a refugee camp....Orphans grow and learn...many subjects....taught by volunteer teachers from America....Most important of all, they learn about Jesus....

Prayer Requests:
Fellow Christians in Burma need our prayers!
Pray for the safety of persecuted Burmese Christians, and their rights to religious freedom.
Pray that God will protect them from the dangers of military junta, landmines, and disease.
Pray for the work of CFI in this troubled country, and that the most isolated villages will receive desperately needed medical, food and school supplies.
Pray that CFI will receive the funds to continue this essential work in Burma.

Burma's Almost Forgotten
.
By Benedict Rogers, a consultant to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (csw . org . uk)
Christianity Today, March 2004
.
North Americans rarely read about Burma (also called Myanmar) in their newspapers, though the courage of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi garnered a few stories last year. Neither the plight of the 5 million Karen and the few hundred thousand Karenni nor the persecution of Burmese Christians is likely to see much news coverage. That news gap is troublesome because the situation in Burma is one of the most brutal in the world. The nearly 4 million Christians in Burma are among the 250 million members of the worldwide persecuted church....But the persecution is tied up with politics. The Karen, Karenni, Chin, and Kachin ethnic minority groups, struggling for freedom from a brutal Burmese regime, include substantial Christian populations. In an effort to terrorize the ethnic groups into submission, the Burma Army uses religion as a weapon of war. When it is convenient to do so, the army cloaks itself in Buddhism and stirs up anti-Christian sentiment. Churches are often the first targets in attacks on ethnic villages, while more often than not Buddhist temples are left untouched....Burma does not affirm Buddhism as the official state religion, though Buddhists total nearly 83 percent of the population. But it is not only Christians who suffer. The Burmese regime, known as the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), oppresses all who oppose it....Burma practices a dismaying variety of human rights abuses. The army compels people to become human minesweepers, sends men into forced labor, and turns children into soldiers. Rape as a weapon of war has been well documented....Amid this suffering springs incredible faith and hope. A Karen known only as Pastor Simon, for example, gave up his position as a seminary professor and theologian when he fled to the camps in Thailand. But once there, he put his time to good use. Seeing the needs of young people for education, he started a Bible school, which today offers bachelor's degrees in divinity recognized by the Baptist World Alliance. Pastor Simon composes meditations that speak of his people's suffering—and hope:
.

They call us a displaced people,
But praise God; we are not misplaced.
They say they see no hope for our future,
But praise God; our future is as bright as the promises of God.
They say they see the life of our people is a misery,
But praise God; our life is a mystery.
For what they say is what they see,
And what they see is temporal.
But ours is the eternal.
All because we put ourselves
In the hands of the God we trust.
.
A few years ago, Meredith Nunu was in her village in Karenni state when she saw Burmese soldiers shoot her husband in his rice paddy. Gathering up her children, she fled to Thailand. But she did not surrender to despair. In the camp, she discovered many children who had been separated from their parents. Some were orphaned. Nunu started a school and an orphanage to care for them. On the walls of her bamboo hut, alongside words of Scripture (and quotes from Albert Camus and Albert Einstein), are the words of YMCA missionary Howard Walter, which sum up the spirit of the Christians under fire in Burma: "I would be true, for there are those who trust me; I would be humble, for I know my weakness; I would be strong, for there is much to suffer."
...I visited a Karen resistance army base in Burma. The Karen National Liberation Army is a tiny, poorly equipped guerrilla force that can do little more than temporarily stave off the Burma Army. "We fight with love, not with hate," said the battalion commander, Colonel Nerdah Mya. "We fight simply to defend our people." A Karen known as Pastor Timothy spoke to the soldiers as they lined up. "We cannot depend on men, on nations, or on the United Nations," he said. "But with God, all things are possible." Holding up a Bible, he said: "Only this book can deliver freedom for our people." I was asked to speak to the soldiers. I read Psalm 91. After Pastor Timothy preached Christ as the one whose death and resurrection saves people from sin, he invited forward any soldier who wanted to give his life to Jesus. Eleven men came forward; three were baptized in the river. I was asked to pray for each one individually. (It was the first time I had ever prayed for someone with an M-16 on his back and a hand grenade on his belt.) I prayed for their protection.
The Karen struggle has been going on since the end of World War II; it is the world's longest civil war....During a public speech a few years ago, a senior Burmese general spoke of the regime's desire to eliminate all opposition. "In 10 years, all Karen will be dead," he threatened. "If you want to see a Karen, you will have to go to a museum in Rangoon." Another Burma Army commander, speaking after he had led an attack on a village—slaughtering people and urinating on the head of a villager—summed up the spirit of the SPDC: "I do not respect any religion. My religion is the trigger of my gun."
Some organizations questing after dispersed Jewish descendants of the Assyrian captivity regard the Karen as remnants of "the lost tribes of Israel." The Karen are often described as a "Christian tribe" (though only 40 percent are Christian), due in part to legends that are eerily similar to Old Testament narratives. These stories predate the arrival of missionaries by hundreds of years, yet they tell of one creator God named Y'wa who made man and woman. The Karen have poems that tell of a man and a woman who lived in a garden, and a snake who gave the woman some forbidden fruit. And they believe they once possessed a "Golden Book" that contained the truth about life. This book was lost, they believe, but one day a young white brother who lived across the seas would come and return it. So when Bible-bearing missionaries, led by American Baptist Adoniram Judson, came to Burma in the 19th century, the Karen welcomed them warmly. More "young white brothers" armed with the Golden Book have come to the Karen since Judson first set foot in Burma. One is an American missionary, a former U.S. Special Forces officer, known as Tha-U-Wah-A-Pah ("Father of the White Monkey"). He leads a missionary group known as the Free Burma Rangers, which aims to bring "help, hope, and love" to the internally displaced people in the conflict-ridden jungles of Burma. He and his teams frequently risk their lives, often working in close proximity to the Burma Army, to provide medical assistance and deliver medical supplies, Bibles, and prayer to the internally displaced. They let the people know they are not forgotten. And they bring packs of supplies donated for displaced mothers and children by individuals and churches around the world, as part of what they call the Good Life Club. On every mission, which usually covers hundreds of miles, they treat an average of 2,000 patients in the jungle. The Free Burma Rangers include medics, videographers, photographers, pastors, musicians—and armed soldiers to protect their efforts....The Rangers' key Scripture is Zechariah 4:6: "'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord." In 1996, Tha-U-Wah-A-Pah was able to visit Rangoon, where he met with Suu Kyi, who is a practicing Buddhist, but whose mother was a Christian. A regular reader of the Bible, Suu Kyi told the missionary that her favorite verse was John 8:32: "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." She asked him to urge Christians around the world to pray for Burma. He responded to that request, started Christians Concerned for Burma, and organized an annual Global Day of Prayer for Burma, which takes place on the second Sunday of March.
Six months after the village on the banks of the Moei River was burned down, I visited the new settlement a few miles upriver. A new church had been built. The people gathered, dressed in their traditional red tunics and sarongs or longyis, and sang. Hymns ranged from "Amazing Grace" to "Onward Christian Soldiers." Hanging on the wall above the platform in the church were words from Revelation 2:10: "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." The Christians of Burma are indeed faithful, often literally unto death. Although they may often feel as though the world has forgotten them, they are not entirely alone. Actively helping for several years are Christian groups such as Partners Relief and Development, which provides humanitarian relief along the Thai border; the U.K.-based Karen Action Group, which sends teams of British Christians several times a year; and Christian human rights advocacy groups. U.S. Congressman Joseph Pitts and British parliamentarians Baroness Cox and Lord Alton have taken up the cause, visiting the Thai-Burma border several times. Martin Panter, a British doctor practicing in Australia, has been visiting the Karen and Karenni twice a year since 1989 on medical training and fact-finding missions. In 1995, soon after the Burma Army and its Karen militia, the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, overran the Karen headquarters at Manerplaw, the Karens lost their last significant outpost at Kawmoora. Panter visited the home of Colonel Taou Lo, Karen commander of Kawmoora, during some of the heaviest fighting, and prayed with his wife and daughter while the colonel was on the front line. Colonel Lo, a Christian, would often pray with his troops on the front line via two-way radio. Some months earlier, the commander had twice dreamt of seeing an elderly man with his hands raised in front of him. On his left hand was the number 16, on his right 85, and above his head 101. After praying about what this might mean, he concluded that he needed to read Psalms—the only book in the Bible with either 101 verses or chapters. He looked at Psalms 16, 85, and 101. Then he plastered the walls of his bunker with these and other verses, and renamed his troops Battalion 101, after Psalm 101's first verse: "I will sing of your love and justice to you, O Lord."....

KJV Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. 2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; 3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight. 4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. 5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. 6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. 7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

KJV Psalm 85:1 LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. 2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah. 3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger. 4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. 5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? 6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? 7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation. 8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. 9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. 10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven. 12 Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase. 13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

KJV Psalm 101:1 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O LORD, will I sing. 2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. 3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. 4 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person. 5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer. 6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. 7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. 8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.

Oh Father God. I come to you in the name of your son Jesus Christ. Thank you Father for bringing me to this message boards where there are so many strong servants of Jesus. Father, it is heartbreaking to hear of all of these Christians being persecuted. Father, I pray that you deliver them from their turmoil. Let these brothers and sisters know that the sufferings which they are now suffering cannot compare to the glory which shall be revealed in them. Let them know that there suffering is but a heartbeat in eternity. Father, have mercy upon their persecutors. Unless they come to know your son Jesus, they will suffer eternally.

I pray all these things in Jesus name.

Amen.

Dear Lord, bring glory to Your Name through the witness and tesimony of those who suffer so much to share the Gospel. It makes me sad to think of our prayers here in America to be blessed, etc., when these people count it an hour to give their very lives for You. Lord, may we have more compassion and remember to pray for the persecuted church. Don't let us put our needs and wants on such a high level, when we should be praying for our brothers and sisters in thes countries where being a Christian gets you disowned. Lord, rain down strength and grace to these Christians that they will reamin faithful to You no matter what they must suffer. I ask and pray, in Jesus Name, amen.

Christians in Bhutan Released from Prison
WASHINGTON, July 31 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) has just learned that the two Christians who had been imprisoned in Bhutan on charges of proselytism have been released. www . persecution . org
ICC was told by Christians inside the country on Saturday, July 29, that the two men had been released and reunited with their families.
“Benjamin” (Budhu Mani Dungana) and “John” (Purna Bahadhur Tamang) were arrested on January 7, 2006, in the small town of Paro after sharing the gospel with a non-Christian family. ICC was informed of their situation earlier in the year but was asked to keep quiet while Christians inside the country exhausted all avenues of appeal. After ICC heard that their prison sentences had been decided, we sent out a press release and worked behind the scenes in conjunction with The Jubilee Campaign to put pressure on the government of Bhutan to free these men.
Jeremy Sewall, ICC’s Regional Policy Analyst for South Asia, stated, “We wish to thank everyone who prayed for these men and contacted government officials to ask for their release. This is incredibly good news, but please continue to pray for Benjamin and John as they rebuild their lives after being in prison for seven months.”
In addition, he added, “Please keep the kingdom of Bhutan in your prayers, as government officials there continue to struggle with wanting to allow more freedom but also fearing that they will lose their identity to western culture. Pray that they will find that religious freedom is a universal right and not a Western right.

Urgent Appeal from Xiaoshan Churches
Pray for the rescue of the missing brothers and sisters who were arrested in the July 29th incident in Xiaoshan.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
July 29th, 2006, the local government employed several thousand military police to demolish the Dangshan church building in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang. More than 60 brothers and sisters were arrested in the conflict. We were informed that some brothers and sisters were seriously injured when they were caught, and some have lost contact with their family members who do not know where to send money or clothing to help them. The lives of some Christians might be in danger and their family members were greatly worried.
Dangshan church was originally built in 1921, in an area of 5 Mu (3333 square meters). After the 1949 liberation the government occupied the property and used it as a hospital. The church has requested the government reimburse them for the land they confiscated in past years, but the government denied the request. As a result, the Christians in Danshan could not meet.
The church has no other choice but to build the sanctuary on a Christian brother’s land. The relative government department suggested that they wait 7 days and they would be given a suitable place to build their church or if they wanted the church could still be built on the original land.
But after 7 days the government did not give permission to build on any of the land that the Christians suggested. The believers felt they had been cheated and they resumed building the sanctuary on the original land.
The Christians had never expected the local government to send several hundred trucks, 4 excavators, and thousands of military policemen to destroy the church on July 29th, 2006. Some Christians were injured, over 60 were arrested in the conflict, and more than 50 are still in the prison.
To this day the government has not provided any legal charges for their imprisonment. What has worried us most is that some Christians disappeared after the conflict. Some are young students that can not be found in either the detention or custody centers. According to reliable sources some may have been beaten to death. If that is true, the government can cover up their actions by destroying the corpses. Their family members are greatly worried.
In the Old Testament, Esther, Mordecai, and all the Jews fasted and prayed to God when they were in danger. In the New Testament, when Apostle Peter was arrested, all the church prayed hard for him.
Now our brothers and sisters in Xiaoshan are in danger. We appeal to you to fast and pray for their lives until they are free. We also appeal to the government to release them.
We request that the government release our brothers and sisters in prison.
We request that the government provide them emergency medical treatment
We request that the government hand over the missing Christians.
We protest to the Xiaoshan government for breaking their promise, the illegal act of destroying the church, and persecuting Christians.
Xiaoshan Brothers and Sisters

Five Christians Receive Arrest Notifications from Xiaoshan Zhejiang Police;
Three Christians Suffer Broken Ribs in Prison

Christian reporter fired after commenting on the incident
MIDLAND, Texas, Aug. 9 /Christian Newswire/ -- China Aid Association learned August 8, that after two weeks of detention the police finally issued five of the fifty Christians who were arrested during the Dangshan church demolition in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang Province, formal notification of “criminal detention.” The five are accused of “interfering with duty of police officers.” Two of the five have decided to engage Mr. Sun Hongye, Dr. Li Baiguang and Mr. Zhang Xingshui as their defense lawyers.
CAA also learned that the Christians were cruelly tortured during interrogation. The methods are very brutal according to the descriptions of Christians who have been released. At least three suffered broken ribs. Female Christians were forced to strip in public.
The family members of these Christians not only endured the pain of their relatives’ arrests but the police searched some of their homes and confiscated their property.
According to statistics, as of August 8th, among the 50 + Christians arrested during the Dangshan church demolition in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang, more than 20 have been released, 5 have been informed of “criminal detention” which means they will very likely face lawsuits. More than 20 are still locked up without any formal charges.
Christians in Xiaoshan said the level of persecution has surpassed that during the Cultural Revolution, and is the most serious in the Xiaoshan churches’ 140 year history. The Xiaoshan churches have engaged “The Association of Human Rights Attorneys for Chinese Christians” as their legal representatives for all of the lawsuits. Dr. Fan Yafeng and Dr. Li Baiguang, members of The Association of Human Rights Attorneys for Chinese Christians, have arrived at Xiaoshan, and are investigating the incident.
According to reliable sources, the government of Zhejiang Province is planning to demolish two other churches in Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, we appeal to the international media to pressure the Zhejiang government to stop violating the constitutional right of religious freedom in China.
