A woman placed some flowers on the grave of her departed mother and started back for her car, parked on the cemetery road. Her attention was diverted to a man kneeling at a grave. The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity, and kept repeating, “Why did you die? Why did you have to die?” The woman approached him and said, “Sir, I don’t want to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration of hurt and pain is more than I’ve ever seen before. For whom do you mourn so deeply? Your child? A parent? Your wife? Who, may I ask, lies in that grave?” The man answered, “My wife’s first husband! Why did he die? Why did he have to die?”

Prayer
Jesus, I am continually reminded of the reality of death. I am reminded of the death of so many of my loved ones. Each day I read or hear about the death of a well-known personality or someone who is known to me. And I do know why they had to die. They had to die so that they could leave this world and enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Thank you, Lord, for reminding me that death is not the end of it all but the beginning of a new life with You.
