Hello all,
I want this thread to be a lighthearted way to share experiences with laughter and fun. To share knowledge and information but do it in a lighthearted manner; especially for those who might be experiencing this lifestyle with less than 6 mos experience.
Although I am only 34, my years of experience are as follows: My father was in the Air Force for 30 years( I was the military brat then), I was active duty military myself for 6 mos active and 3 1/2 years reserve, and I was a military spouse for just under 10 years. I am now engaged to someone who works at the military base where we live and he trains the military.........so, you do the math.
First thing I want to do is, for fun. List some of the things we go thru, some sad, some funny, and some unique; Just to be an icebreaker. then we will get into more topics as we go along on how to get involved or start a family support group.
YOU MIGHT BE A MILITARY WIFE/GIRLFRIEND IF:
You understand what "O dark thirty" means
You understand when he says "Big Chief says we gotta stay late"
You appreciate the new wife/ girlfriend's shyness since you were there just a few months ago
You look forward to shopping trips with the family support group
You look forward to redecorating the house with new stuff from home parties (Pampered Chef, Candle Parties, Home Interior, American Peddler, Tupperware, etc)
You know the home parties still won't take his place even though you enjoy the extra money he makes for that new apple corer/slicer/peeler
You start making lists of only positive things to say on the phone since you want to make every minute count of your 10 minute phone calls
You look forward to not having to do "field laundry" when he does deploy
You look forward to making new friends and "sisters" within your military family
You can't wait to show the children off at the video teleconference which is being televised by the local news station, (however you are nervous one of them will do something horrifically embarassing that you will never live down)
You look forward to planting a garden which you know when you finally get the seasons figured out, it will be time to move again
You finally figured out a good shopping schedule at the commissary only when it's time to start filling out your transfer paperwork for the next move
You spend enough money at the post office and buy enough postage stamps during deployments to pay off the credit card debts of at least 7 strangers
Your telephone bill looks like it could exceed the national debt during deployments and unaccompanied tours.
You have learned to "not judge a book by it's cover" due to all your experiences with different people, cultures and countries.
You get extremely excited when you find out that you are pregnant and one of your new neighbors is someone you met at a duty assignment 2 unaccompanied tours, 3 duty stations, and 4 deployments ago.
YOU LEARN TO TRUST GOD IN ALL THINGS KNOWING HE WILL PROTECT YOU AS LONG AS YOU PLACE YOUR TRUST AND FAITH IN HIM
YOU LEARN TO PRAY AND TRULY SEEK HIM WHEN YOUR LOVED ONE IS GONE
YOU GROW CLOSER TO YOUR LOVED ONE AND TO GOD WHILE THEY ARE GONE AND LOOK FORWARD TO THEM COMING HOME, FINALLY UNDERSTANDING HOW GOD FEELS ABOUT HIS CHILDREN RETURNING HOME TO HIM!!!
Father,
may these words help those who are going thru any of this right now, and help me to share words of insight, wisdom, hope and encouragement. Help me to fervently pray for all those who are deployed, training to deploy, on unaccompanied tours, and training for duties that will take them from their loved ones. Help me to guide and direct all those who come here, to seek you out first and foremost in all things; I ask you to give me words that glorify and edify you. In Jesus almighty name. Amen.
