Pacific Northwest Revival Stirs Region
by Mary Owen

Evangelist Jerry Gaffney
is seeing an unusual spiritual stirring in
Oregon and Washington

Jerry Gaffney, an evangelist from Centralia, Wash., knew that
Pentecostal pioneer SmithWigglesworth had visited the Pacific
Northwest in 1926. He also had heard that Wigglesworth, during
a stop in Tacoma, Wash., prophesied that a spiritual revival
would one day sweep the region.

What Gaffney didn't know was that God would use him to spark
that revival. After 40 days of prayer and fasting in January
1998, Gaffney and his partners began a renewed effort to spread
the gospel in Oregon and Washington. Results from the unusual
outdoor campaigns have been impressive, with large numbers of
conversions and reports of miracles.

Gaffney's tent meetings in September in Sherwood, Ore., for
example, shook the souls of thousands and drew five leaders from
foreign nations to participate. Four came from Africa, and another
came from Northern Ireland.

"The foreigners didn't know each other," Gaffney
said. "All did not have the finances to come. All were very
busy in revival in their own countries."

Pastor Victor James walked away from a nationwide prayer meeting
during which more than 1 million Nigerians celebrated the election
of their first Christian president. James has served 15 years
on the front lines of missionary work in Lagos, Nigeria, planting
more than 20 churches and surviving years of persecution for
his faith.
David Sebuufu from Uganda

David Sebuufu, pastor of the second largest church in Uganda,
says his church sponsors 24-hour praise and prayer seven days
a week. But he left the meetings to deliver a revival message
to Oregonians.

Pastor Douglas Chiaza of Zimbabwe has seen the blind and deaf
healed in his country. A South African pastor, Iann Schonken,
and a church leader from Northern Ireland, Kevin Lynch, also
flew to the Northwest to visit Gaffney's meetings.

Pastor Douglas Chiaza of Zimbabwe in the orange to the left of Jerry
"God brought them here to open our eyes and hearts,"
Gaffney told Charismsa. "Over 90 percent of the population
here [in the Pacific Northwest] doesn't believe in the Lord.
Jesus told these pastors He was bringing in His best army for
one of His biggest battles."

Most church growth experts say the Pacific Northwest has one
of the lowest percentages of evangelical Christians in the United
States. The region is also a haven for New Age spiritism.

Gaffney's meetings in Sherwood, located on the outskirts of
Portland, Ore., were sponsored by New Life Assembly of God and
its pastor Jeff Dorothy. Standing-room-only crowds packed the
tent and poured outside as thousands tried to get seats.

The meetings gained international attention, from seekers
to church-goers and even the local police, who on one occasion
threatened to cancel the sessions because of noise and overcrowding.

"We should have known something was about to happen,
"Gaffney said. "We had a permit for the tent, but when
the people started singing, they could be heard miles away."

More than 466 messages of support came from around the world,
and the police backed down.

"People from 47 churches drove for hundreds of miles
just to be at that last meeting," Gaffney said. "I
just spoke to hundreds with no loud speakers, no microphones,
no musical instruments. They still ran to the altar. They still
got healed and filled with the Holy Spirit. They still got saved."

By Gaffney's estimates, more than 600 people were saved during
the four-week campaign in Sherwood, and more than 60,000 people
made decisions during the last five years of his travels.

"People are hungry here for a move of God," said
Dorothy, whose congregation has grown since the Sherwood meetings.

"The Pacific Northwest is ripe for revival. I've been
pastoring for 10 years, and the biggest change I've seen emerging
is intercessory prayer," he told Charisma. "There's
more fervency for the things of God - a desire to witness, to
give. There's an overall rising of people really getting after
God."

Several Sherwood participants followed Gaffney to Marysville,
north of Seattle, then to Lynnwood, Wash. More than 1,000 people
came to Lynnwood to catch the next wave of ministry and watch
Gaffney "do his God thing," Dorothy said.

"It all started with the children, then the churches,"
Gaffney said of the throngs attending the Lynnwood meetings.
"It was a blessing to see a Baptist church praise in English
right next to a Pentecostal church praying in tongues. No one
was condemning one another. We all knew we were tearing down
strongholds."

Gaffney estimates almost 1 million people were praying via
the Internet for the meetings at Christ the Rock Fellowship in
Lynnwood. His aim is to have Christians worldwide praying for
the Pacific Northwest.

A Vietnam veteran, Gaffney started revival meetings in 1994
at Lighthouse Assembly of God in Port Angeles, Wash., then in
other towns in the state: Sequim, Forks, Bremerton, Blaine and
Silverdale.

In more than 2,700 services in the last five years, gang members
turned from crime, people threw barrels of drugs away, marriages
were restored, and thousands found salvation-with an estimated
50 percent to 60 percent continuing in their newfound faith.
Gaffney calls the move "divine destiny."

"We're moving the mountain, blasting the rock, plowing
the fields," Gaffney said of the revival meetings, which
surface, he noted, "when the Lord calls."

Gaffney added: "When the big glory window falls, I don't
care where it is. Just let me be there the day it comes down."

To my good friend Jerry Gaffney January 17
From Pastor Jeff Dorothy

New Life Assembly of God Sherwood, Oregon

Jerry, you and I first met during the summer of 1996 at the Assembly of God in Port Townsend, Washington. An old friend, Pastor Loren Hamar, invited me to the first meetings you were holding there. I arrived the first Sunday night you spoke, and stayed through Wednesday morning. God moved powerfully in those meetings. It was during that time I asked you to come hold meetings in Sherwood.

In January of 1997, you invited me to the meetings you were holding at Evergreen AG in Vancouver, (now River City AG). Many members of our congregation attended the meetings at Evergreen, sometimes as many as forty on a Friday night. I must have gone to at least a dozen services, and they were all great. We really saw the power of God in demonstration at Evergreen. Pastor Bob Lindseth was flowing in the River of God, and the people of Evergreen were readily embracing your ministry.

I will never forget an evening of baptisms there when Pastor Bob, after baptizing many members of his church who had been powerfully touched during the meetings, did a cannon ball into the baptistry, not once, but twice. The water traveled so far I had to go on stage and move my guitar before the second wave hit!

In September of 1997, we set up a tent at New Life in Sherwood and held meetings with you twice a day, six days a week for a month. Our church body has never been the same. During those meetings we saw many people saved, healed, delivered and called into ministry. Several of those are now in ministry at New Life. One of them, Kim Fanger, just became our church secretary.

In 1998, we held another month of meetings, and once again the hand of God was upon us. Sometimes it's hard to explain the anointing that God has seen fit to allow you to walk in. I've seen unsaved men, men who've never darkened the door of a church, fall under the power of God, wondering what hit them. I've seen drug addicts powerfully moved upon by the Lord as you reach out and take their hands. The fruit of the ministry has been abundantly evident during the meetings, something the members of our church will readily attest to.

In 1999, we set up a tent, and again invited you to come and minister. During those tent meetings we saw as many as 400 people, from as many as 47 different congregations attend the same night. Baptists and Methodists, Catholics and Lutherans, some Pentecostal, some not, were ministered to during those meetings.

Once again, people touched during those meetings have continued to attend New Life. God moved so powerfully, it was like nothing I had ever seen. Pastors from Africa and other countries showed up, some unknown and unannounced, yet they were used by God. One in particular, Victor James from Nigeria has now become a good friend, and has ministered in Sherwood a number of times.

Two weeks before Christmas, I asked you to come minister. We held one week of meetings, and they were glorious. One of our men had been inviting a friend from work to church for months, and for months he had been turned down. Each night of the meetings the invitation went out, and the first three nights the invitation was refused.

On Thursday, Larry brought his coworker, Mike, and he was saved and set free from addictions. If we had not held that week of meetings, I don't know if Mike would ever have made it to church. His marriage has been restored; they're in church every time the doors are open, and they're bringing in their unsaved friends.

Thank you, Jerry, for listening to the Lord, and for coming to Sherwood. I know God has called and anointed you to minister His Word and power throughout the Pacific Northwest. We pray for you often. You know the doors of New Life Assembly of God in Sherwood are always open to you. I look forward to another series of meetings this year, God willing.

Just reading through these articles is bringing to life the urgent need to keep the prayers fervent for these kinds of workings in the spirit to keep pouring out. Heavenly Father, I lift those areas of the world where You have fore seen the pulling down of Satan and his great hold on the hearts of Thy children. I pray that You will continue to inspire and use good men and women to pray over these things that the doors of the nations may be opened up in those areas of the world where there is oppression and darkness and where people's minds are steeped on the things of the world and feel self satisfied in their lives. I pray that You will prepare the hearts and the minds of those who will know your voice and answer when they hear you call them. I pray that these different religious organizations can pull down any barriers between them and work together to the bringing down of any animosity and for the saving of souls. I pray over Jerry Gaffney and all of the pastors and ministers and saints in the Pacific Northwest and what is taking place there will continue to unfold and shake up the people in this area of the world where they are ministering. I pray You would move upon the hearts of the people and prepare them to be received into Your kingdom. I ask in Jesus Holy Name amen.
