This is an interesting topic!

eagle4him,
Thanks for your input! And please do not feel one inkling of a debate...I am no expert on demon possessions/oppressions!

I would mostly agree with you. I would like to point out one thing - mostly food for thought type of an scenario. Wouldn't Jesus' disciples been commissioned and operating under his anointing? Since the disciples and others were not "Spirit-Filled" until the day of Pentecost?

I just figured I would bring it up, since it is a very interesting and seemingly controversial subject. Any thoughts from anyone?

And a reminder to everyone to operate in love in this forum - we can agree to disagree!

BTW Maybe this would be good subject matter for Jerry to teach!!!

Bill and Alexis,
I moved your earlier post from "demons attacking persons while they sleep" and started a new thread. I have had some interest in this subject as well.

Genesis 1:2 "...darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."--looks like the Holy Spirit was already here, way before us!

Luke 1:15 "..and he (John the Baptist) will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth." John had the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament!

Luke 1:17 "..and he (John the Baptist) will go on before the Lord in the Spirit and power of Elijah." --apparently Elijah had the Holy Spirit, also.

When Jesus comissioned the twelve (Judas included), He commanded them to go first to the lost sheep of Israel (The church) and heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast out demons (yes, people in the church have demons).

I do not believe that you can perform any of these signs and wonders without being filled with the Holy Spirit!

Anyone have any other thoughts to add?

i belive they all had gifts with out being Filled cause didnt our LORD send them under his authority two by two and take nothing but two swords and if found a house that feed them and give them restand told them to leave their peace in that house i belive the LORD was build ing there faith up in each of them.to show them that they must abide in him not themselves.
JESUS GAVE thanks to the Father in trune we must give thats to our LORD JESUS it our faith that moves mountain not the holy spirit. our LORD SENT the HOLY SPIRIT to comforter the HOLY SPIRIT gives the gifts as he wills.and everthing points to how is our relationsip is were our so called powers at penycaost the HOLY SPIRIT fell on them all to yes to abid with them i belive our LORD JESUS HOW TO SHAPERS AND Ibelive that paul and the rest was to show us how to stayed filled with the HOLY SPIRIT and to operate the gifts.

eagle4him,
No problem moving the post to make a new thread - this is actually quite interesting.

The Holy Spirit has always been there, so has the Father, and so has Jesus. So was John the Baptist, and Elijah the exception? I just believe the Apostles were operating under the power and authority of Jesus. Then on the day of Pentecost, were "filled" with the Holy Spirit, and they were still operating under the authority of Jesus. Seems almost paradoxical...
I believe Jesus set the example how it will be for us. He walked the Earth, as we would have to walk it, and grew in favor and power as we would have to do. He even didn't formally receive the "Christ Anointing" until he was baptized.
I believe people can perform supernatural signs and wonders, without themselves being filled with the Holy Spirit. Mostly because there's power in the name of Jesus!
MT 7:21-23"Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.'
Anyone else have an opinion about this?

The Holy Spirit was given to many in the Old Testament. This is not some new occurence given on Pentecost! Many will believe that I am speaking heresy, but just look at the evidence!

Genesis 41:38 "Can we find anyone like this man (Joseph) in whom is the spirit of God? Since God has made all this known to you there is no one so discerning and wise as you."
Wisdom and discernment are fruits of the holy Spirit!!!!

Exodus 28:3 "Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom...Wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit!

Exodus 31:3 "And I have filled him with the Spirit of God..."

Numbers 11:17 "I will take of the Spirit that is on you (Moses) and put the spirit on them."

Numbers 11:25 "He took of the spirit that was on him and put the spirit on the seventy elders. When the spirit rested on them they prophesied.."

Numbers 11:29 "But Moses replied, are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord's people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them."

The Spirit of God also came upon:

Balaam Numbers 24:2
Joshua Numbers 27:18
Joshua Deut 34:9
Othriel Judges 3:10
Gideon Judges 6:34
Jephthah Judges 11:29
Samson Judges 13:25 14:6
Saul 1Sa 10:6
David 1 Sa 16:13
Sauls men 1 Sa 19:20

In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is described by Peter as "The Spirit of Christ" Since Christ was in the beginning and is now and will always be, then it is not too dificult to understand that the Holy Spirit has always been with us. He was even with Judas when he accepted the piece of bread by Christ, and it was at that moment that Satan entered him. This is a perfect example of grieving the Holy Spirit. For it is true that the Holy Spirit cannot reside in a demon-filled, or possessed believer.

The Holy Spirit was given TEMPORARILY to those in the Old Testament to fulfill God's purposes on the earth. The Holy Spirit fell UPON them temporarily, but did not INFILL them permenantly.

Since the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, believers can receive the fulness and permenance of the indwelling Holy Spirit to empower us always for the work we must always do and the way we're supposed to be living.

I believe the apostles, while Jesus was with them, were operating under His authority and name. After Pentecost, they received the power from on high permenantly.
