Tom Lyons, chief deputy for Beltrami County, said up to 14 people were injured in the mid-afternoon shooting at Red Lake High School in far northern Minnesota. Lyons said a suspect was in custody, but he had no other details.
The FBI did not say how many people had been killed and also declined to release details.
Red Lake High School, on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, has about 300 students, according to its Web site.
Audrey Thayer, who lives in Bemidji and works as a researcher for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Minnesota chapter, said the reservation was locked down by police with roadblocks.
“They have got it closed off,” she said.
The reservation is about 240 miles north of the Twin Cities. It is home to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.

A rampage by a Minnesota high school student has left eight people dead, and at least 14 wounded.
An FBI spokesman said at least eight people have died after a high school opened fire at high school. Dead are the shooter, three other students, two females and a male along witht he shooter, who was a male student; a female high school teacher; a male security guard; and two adults off-campus, one man, one woman, who are believed to be the shooter's grandparents.
Roman Stately, a local fire department official, told CBS News Anchor Bob Schieffer the shooter was a student, and that he may have killed his grandparents before coming to school with "several weapons."
Stately said the student had a shot gun and some pistols. He killed himself, Stately said.
"From what I gather, he walked in the front door, shot the security guard first. Walked up and down the hall shooting,'' Stately said. "He shot several in one classroom."
Stately said he didn't know what prompted the student's shooting rampage. The dead student's grandfather was a veteran police officer, Stately said.

Bush praises fallen security guard
WACO, Texas (AP) -- President Bush on Saturday praised Minnesota high school security guard Derrick Brun for saving countless students by bravely confronting the teenage gunman who shot and killed him.
"Derrick's bravery cost him his life, and all Americans honor him," Bush said in his first public comments about Monday's shootings on Minnesota's Red Lake Indian reservation.
Brun, a former police officer, was working at the doors of Red Lake High School when 16-year-old student Jeff Weise approached with a loaded shotgun and other weapons.
"Although he was unarmed, Derrick ignored the pleas of a colleague to run for his life," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "By engaging the assailant, he bought vital time for a fellow security guard to rush a group of students to safety."
Besides Brun, Weise shot to death five students and a teacher, before killing himself. Earlier, he shot to death his grandfather and the man's girlfriend.
Bush said he and the first lady are praying for the victims and that the federal government is helping the community. He said the FBI and Department of Justice are coordinating with other authorities to provide counseling, help with funeral arrangements and offer other assistance.
"As we help the families in this community, we must do everything in our power to prevent tragedies like this from happening," Bush said. "Children benefit from a sense of community, and the support and involvement of caring adults.
"To keep our children safe and protected, we must continue to foster a culture that affirms life and provides love, and helps our young people build character."
Some American Indians have complained that Bush did not respond publicly to the shooting for four days. His first communication with the community came Friday morning in a five-minute telephone call to Floyd Jourdain Jr., chairman of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa.
In contrast, President Clinton publicly expressed his condolences within hours of the shootings that left 15 dead at Columbine High School in 1999. He also proposed new gun control measures and school safety projects in a radio address a few days later.
Bush also used Saturday's address to celebrate Easter and remember military members overseas.
"Easter is the victory of light over darkness," Bush said. "In this season of renewal, we remember that hope leads us closer to truth, and that in the end, even death itself will be defeated. That is the promise of Easter morning."

Lord, protect our schools! Protect our students; protect our teachers! Father God, release now many angels to go to these schools and take up stations of protection against these crimes! Oh, Lord, fill this naiton with every angel of protection needed.
Beyond that, save these young men and women who feel driven to do such things. Get them GOOD SAVED and having a good impact, rather than a negative, on their class mates.
Get some of these death metal band members and punk band memebers and rap band members GOOD SAVED, too, and remove some of the evil music that influences these kids. Let these kids have POSITIVE role models, not negative.
Lord, intervene in this situation regarding too many of these school shootings.
