Daily Prayer for Corrections Officers - Please Come Pray!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am a corrections officer in the Oregon Department of Corrections. In my short 3-year career I have seen men bloody and beaten, rapped and tortured. I ask myself often who in the regular world cares about what I do for a living. Recently a Cpl. at our Maximum-security facility (OSP) was taken hostage by an inmate with a homemade knife, where was the public outcry and prayers for her family and her. The public does not always see the danger that I face on a daily basis. I am sitting in a dorm room full of sixty plus inmates, behind two locked security doors. I am alone in this room. I am required to walk among the bunks in order to check the inmates every thirty minutes. I often feel that people do not give enough credit to the men and women that protect them from the rapist, murderer, child molester, and drug dealers. Often I see prayers go out for your families loved ones that are either in prison or going to prison. But I ask you, where is the prayer for the man in the tower who must shoot the inmate escaping to prevent anyone in the public from being harmed? Where is the prayer for the people who stand in my boots and walk in the middle of a recreation yard full of 500 plus inmate that are convicted felons? Where is the prayer for the men and women that keep those people that are sentenced by you their peers to prison, where is the prayer for their strength and wisdom. I am asked almost daily about what really goes on in a prison. Prison is a dangerous place for both inmate and officer alike. There is not way to know if I will make it home at the end of my shift or if I will just be another statistic on the books of officers killed in the line of duty by and inmate. I ask you these questions not to cause shock or disbelief but this is national Correctional Officers week and I have not seen one single news story about the men and women that risk their lives so that justice in our country will always prevail. So that people everywhere know that there are real consequences for their action. I have twenty-five more years until I retire. That is longer than 90% of the inmates that I oversee. Where is the prayer for my friends and partners in prison?

Where is the prayer and praise for US? The unknown, unrecognized prisoners of the countries prisons!

Just a few thoughts from an Officer that was curious.

Thank you C. Toombs. that was very enlightening. I appreciate you bringing that up, as have been involved in prison ministries in the past. We do apologize if have offended you. I will check into something for this with the Administration, but it will be up to the Leadership to decide how to proceed. Again thank you for bringing this to our attention and forgive us if have offended you. God Bless!!

Dear Lord, we pray for all the men and women who serve as prison guards, that you would watch over and protect them as they serve to watch over and control the criminals who are serving time. We pray that you would give them wisdom, strength and lead them to you as necessary to keep them ever guarded against the evil they face each day. Give them the abilities to keep things going smoothly and peacefully, with an ability to prevent dangerous situations. In Jesus Name- Amen!!

Hi Chris!

You are right! We tend to get secure and forget that there are some of our protectors who walk into danger every day, knowingly and willingly!

Please forgive us.

I have changed the title of this thread to reflect your request for prayer protection for Corrections Officers.

Thank You for nudging us and reminding us of the silent service so many give.

Father place a wall of protection around the Officers and Inmates! Bring peace to their situations and remove the violence and danger that the Officers face every day. Thank You Lord for their service and keep your hand over them to keep them from being hurt or threatened as they walk their beats. Thank You Lord! AMEN!

I am not upset with anyone, nor do I want people to come and pray for correctional officers. I simply want people to understand that there is another life that is bound and inprisioned inside of this countries federal, state, county and local institutions. We are people that rise to the occassion on a daily basis without any public acknowledgement, accept when a mistake is made. My goal was to have people here on this site come to some realization that there are a group of people that work in prisons on a daily basis that simply want the public to recognize the job they do. You don't hear about the officer that is beaten and battered while stopping an inmate who is convicted of rape and murder from escaping the institution. You don't hear about the officers that risk their personal safety to stop one inmate from assaulting another inmate. You don't hear because you either don't want to hear or you want to hear only the good things. Thus I come to the changing on the title of this posting. I chose the title I did because I wanted people to be touched in either a good or bad way. Not because I wanted them to feel sympathetic or compassion from a title. Prison is a two sided place. First is the inmates that are sent there and second is the men and women that risk their lives to work there. To carry out the PUBLICS, that you be all of you, sentence. Most officers are new and facing 25 years inside the fence. This is going to be a life sentence for some of us. For others it is only a few years or even a decade. I believe that the informaton shared on this site will enlighted others to seek out those that work in prisons and say thank you. I bet that hardly anyone knew it was correctional employees week last week. I would be willing to bet that most people know when it is police officers week or firefighters week. These jobs help people and I have no ill feels towards these people. I am thankful they are there. But the take the police for instince. 80% of the people they deal with on a daily basis on patrol are law abiding citizens. The other 20% are bad people. A correctional officer deals with 100% convicted felons. There are not law abiding citizens in prison. Accept for the ones that work there.

In closing I wish for you to change my title back to what it was as this is the statement that I wanted. It is not vulgar nor is it of any type of rude or disrespectful tone. Simply the truth. Just

Posted by: akabezalel

I don't remember what the title was.

No one thought you were being rude.

You are right the prison guards do need our prayers and this is as good a thread as any to hold them up in prayer so I changed the title and asked people to pray for the guards and other officers.

Do you mean you do not want people ot pray for you?

I am confused now.

Forgive me but, it makes no difference, I'll continue to pray for them now that I've been reawakened to that group we have been neglecting. To be honest, I hadn't been involved with prison ministry for about 4 years and will admit I'd forgotten about them. Again, forgive me for that. God Bless!!

Father, in the name of Jesus, I agree with these prayers according to Matthew 18:19, and I stand in faith with Christian Commando, believing, that every need is met, in Jesus' name. Amen and thank you God!

chris i have been in corrections for over ten (10) years it is very hard job to do,but it is a job that has a special feel to it.! it is dangerous it is thankless but you are in a position to shine the light in a dark world like no other place available. You can not of course go in and preach and really verbally share a word with an offender we have to seperate and do our duties inside the fence.,but !!! the way you do your duty and the way you carry your self MAKES A TON OF DIFFERENCE!! do your job the right way do not take the easy way out ,,security is not a convience.!! when you see a wrong make it right(this is a heavy statement) when you see something not right correct it(it may even be a co-worker) say no and mean it say thank you when it is diserved, and be fair in all you deal with.do not play games and do not cheat.work like you know that when one sees you they can say he is an honest man and he is calm not affraid,by being "straight up" folks will notice and by being an example you can change a person.!!! and thank you to call us corrections officer not a gaurd.gaurds work at the bank and convience stores.!! we have to go to an academy (here in texas it is 12 weeks long)..i too have seen a lot,i have been hit/kicked/slaped/body fluids and unknown substances thrown on me/attacked with a shank(homemade knife) and i have always walked away and returned the next day.!!God is given the glory!! I rely on God to see me thru, and people know who 'has my back; be a witness in all you do !!!!!! amen

Lord Jesus- We continue to pray for your protection over these mighty protectorites who you have chosen to work in these facilities to keep peace and tranquility going for these people. We ask for you to keep watch and protection over them daily as they deal with all situations, guiding and touching them as they do thier jobs. In Jesus Name- Amen!!

My husband has been in corrections for years. Our prayers include this group of people as well. The statistics you gave is the way it is; i.e. one officer to hundreds of inmates in some areas. There is definitely danger everyday.

There are many inmates who say going to prison is the best thing that happened to them because it causes many of them to turn to the Lord. Some want the gang tatoos removed once they get out if they had the funds, don't want to go back to the same neighborhoods, etc.

Thanks for bringing this to the forum's attention. The prayers are appreciated.

Thank you for your very informative and touching post. Thank you so much for what you do in your job, facing such horrible dangers every day to help our society be more under control from hostile and dangerous people. May the Father bless you and yours mightily - though I am not just saying "Bless you" I am also going to be praying for you and your family and for other corrections
officers and their families past, present and future. You are a hero. People go to the Academy Awards and look at the beautiful, rich and famous in awe and admiration. They are not heros. People like you are. So many among the rich and famous have their reward now. I trust yours will last much longer and be much greater!

The other thing I feel a need to say, though, is that something should be done to make things more safe and secure for corrections officers. I cannot believe this is not possible and am going to pray that there will be protests from effective people and serious reforms - and soon!

Lord Jesus Christ, please look upon the brave men and women who work in corrections. Place your hand upon them when they are few on the yard or alone in gym with a few hundred inmates as they think to themselves, "I have only this can of O.C. and a baton to protect myself if something gets out of control. What would happen to my wife and kids if something should ever happen..." Be there with them Lord, like a shield and a mighty "equalizer" on their belt. Comfort them when they see and experience horrific things; for you have been there with them. Let them know you are their witnessing their suffering. Also be with them in court when they are on trial for doing their jobs. You know they often cannot share their suffering with loved ones, not wanting to depress them. This combined with the double-shifts, lack of sleep and family time often leads to wounds that no one can see. Lead them to sources where they can truly heal, talk about these things, make sense of them, eventually forgive and feel normal again. Lord Jesus, please instill your presence of peace in our prisons so that inmates experience a real change of heart, have desire to repent, and give the officers important information that can prevent tragedy. In this way help the inmates heal and encourage their brothers and sisters to do likewise, making the time go by--for all--in peace. I ask that you pour your Holy Spirit, angels, and archeangels; lead Godly men and women into this work (and keep them encouraged to be there)--what ever it takes to make our prisons safer--and to make rehabilitation a reality. Only you can do this, Jesus. And Jesus, help the word get out to the world about what correctional employees do, so that they are correctly understood and supported by their neighbors. I ask this in your name, Jesus Christ--You who are in union with our Almighty Father, our Creator--our God. Amen.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Officer Garza out to take my statement tonight, after the theft of my lawnmower. I praise You for sending such a caring professional who took the matter seriously. I know it wasn't life or death, but it made me feel better to deal with such a nice man. Protect him as he goes on his shifts and provide him with abundance beyond whatever needs he may have in his life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Thank you praying gal for your post. It has been a long time since I have visited the prayer room. I am currently just returning to work after my second surgery in two years for a knee injury I recieved when an inmate assaulted me in our dining room. I can't thank you enough for your words of prayer and reform. Thank you on behalf of corrections employees everywhere.....

Lord-

We pray for the prison guards and corrections officers all across this Country, that you would watch over and guide them and protect them as they take care of thier prison details and tasks. We lift up one new young man who has finally settled in who was not sure of his new job as one, but has now gained some friends and grown into tis position. We pray that all will be covered by the blood of Christ during thier shifts to do all the right things, have the right thoughts and produce the right actions as needed. In Jesus Name-Amen!!

Thank you for your prayers for Correctional employees. I have worked in Corrections for 7 years. You don't know how much we need prayer - as we are often a forgotten group. Brought tears to my eyes, really.
