No physical torment in hell?

This makes it look like there is no real torment in hell.
No physical pain. Here is a small part of the text. The text also claim that the rich man was not really tormented by the flames. It said that the flames did not burn him they only made him thristy...

2. The "weeping and gnashing of teeth" passages:

I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (matt 8.11ff)

As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (matt 13.40)

Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matt 13.47)

Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (matt 22.13)

But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (matt 24.48ff)

Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (matt 25.28ff)

There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. (Luke 13.28ff)

The discomfort described here is weeping/sorrow, NOT screaming/pain--contrary to most of the popular images of hell used for this question.

Notice that a few of these passages have the 'darkness' and 'fire' images, but the effects are cast in terms of sorrow ('weeping') and anguish/regret/anger ('gnashing of teeth', cf. Acts 7.54, Ps 37.12). Notice especially that in the Lucan passage the weeping occurs "when they see" their own exclusion--it is due to the separation issue, not some torture or pain.

Indeed, Moreland/Habermas can say [CS:IOSD:164]:

"Since God cannot force his love on people and coerce them to choose him, and since he cannot annihilate creatures with such high intrinsic value, then the only option available is quarantine. And that is what hell is."

This needs to be seen clearly. In you look back through the verses above carefully, the weeping and gnashing is explicitly related to ‘exclusion’ from future Kingdom blessings. The weeping is NOT related to some pain of fire, even in the passages that mention that. It is consistent throughout these passages—“but you yourselves thrown out”…

Frederik- Remember the story of Christ about the Richman and Lazarus? After the richman lifted up his eyes from Hell and started speaking to Abraham, he asked him to send Lazarus to come, dip his finger in water to "cool his lips". That to me is feeling torment physically.

I can show more Scriptures, but remember as well, the weeping and gnashing of teeth is a result I'm sure of physical torment.

God Bless!!

According to this text it's not.
But I don't think this makes much sense.

Why? What other reason would they have for weeping and gnashing of teeth? (Particularly when the richman asked for a "cooling of his lips"- physical torment.)

God Bless!!

I guess they think that it's psychological suffering and not physical suffering.

Frederik- Lets look at this closer. notice God's Word declares Hell and the Lake of Fire are places of torment. 2- The richman asks for cool water to "cool his lips", not wet them, as tho thirsty. 3- Realize, part of eternal seperation from God will effect all aspects of man, from the physical to psychological.

Notice how the richman asked Abraham to send someone back from the dead to appear to and speak to his living relatives to help them avoid where he- richman, went.

But, those passages may not have references to fire and brimestone, others about Hell and the Lake of fire describe them as having that in God's Word.

I tell you Brother, do not allow others to always convince you to believe in only a few Scriptures about a certain subject in order to claim a false belief. All related Scriptures must be taken into account, or the full understanding God is trying to make cannot even literally taken, be understood.

God declares in His Word in Old Test that Hell was originally created only for satan and his demons, most assuredly not for thier pleasure but torment. 2- God then declares He had expanded the boundaries of Hell after man fell from Grace, in order to accept the lost spirit-souls of men as well.

Brother in Christ- I know you know more Scriptures about this subject but choose to ignore them. God warned me years ago, having His Word to go by, but still always going on other's opinions instead, will put me in an akward position when facing God later.

Why? Because I was choosing then to go by other's beliefs many times that were wrong, because I knew God's Word had other Scriptures that gave a complete picture on a subject, but chose to ignore them over what people, not God's Word said totally about it.

Love you my friend- God Bless!!

But when you're not sure about what the bible says then you can also ask others.

There have been many folks given a 'tour of hell' and many have written books about their experiences. Whether they really happened or not, only the one who experienced it knows for sure. They are interesting to read, amazing to hear, etc. I am not saying they happened or that they didn't happen. I have no way of knowing that.

I have read many of these books and heard many of their experiences where people went to hell AND to heaven! I have not heard Jerry's experience and I am pretty sure I'd have remembered it since I remember most of his personal experiences with the supernatural that he's shared.

Just remember the BIBLE is our ONLY source for complete and total truth from GOD! And God talks a LOT of what hell and heaven are like in His Word.

Matthew 10
28And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 5
22But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger ofhell fire.

Mark 9
43And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Matthew 9
45And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
46Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Matthew 13
42And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 16
23In hell, where he was in torment,

Rev. 20
10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

I asked Jerry. He said he has to pray about it.I'd really like to know what he saw.

While you may be interested to know dear friend, have you not noticed the Scriptures MamaCat posted to show there are physical torments with Hell?

theres all kinds of proof within all posts here from God's Word to show you, but it's your choice to accept or ignore them. God Bless!!

Posted by: Frederik

I read the verses.

But hearing from Jerry would also be interesting.

Posted by: Christian Commando

Ok... I'll tell you what, i'll hold you up in prayer for that. How does that sound? God Bless you my boy!!!

Okay, thanks.
