Is the thing with Adam's rib a metaphor?

I talked to a catholic on the net who claims that the thing with
Adam's rib is a metaphor. Was Eve really made from Adam's rib or is this only
metaphorical to show something? Does this mean Adam lacked 1 rib
afterwards? A lot of people say that this is metaphorical but if this
is metaphorical then everything is metaphorical, then hell is also
metaphorical and nothing makes sense anymore, this cannot be!
He said that everything needs to be interpreted just like the
teachings of Jesus. But I cannot imagine that the whole bible is like
the teachings of Jesus, then nobody could understand it and everything
would be totally vague.
But after talking to this person I became scared and insecure and
thought what if everything is only metaphorical? what if Jesus did not
walk over the water and all this? what if it all needs to be
interpreted?
how can I protect myself against these thoughts which drag me down?

One of the original translations refers to God removing a piece of flesh from Adam's side. I suggest this means muscle and bone material.

Yes, but they argue that this is only a metaphor which is supposed to show that man and women are the same.

Frederik,
A key to understanding the Bible is giving it the kid test. We would understand a whole lot more of God's Word, if we just accepted it as a child would read it, and understand it to mean!
A child can understand the Bible, but a theologian cannot understand the full depth of God's Word.
So read the Bible with the eyes of a child, and with child-like faith.
(Child like faith - Having faith like a child. Accepting what is presented without intellectual struggle.)

I know what you mean but the problem is that sometimes I become insecure about this and ask myself what if everything needs to be interpreted just like Jesus' parables and everything is simply more abstract? Cause this is what most people say which don't want to listen to the bible. They say that everything needs to be interpreted and it doesn't mean what it says and nothing is as it seems...
They also say that the story with Adam and Eve is only symbolical and it never happened this way but somehow the people had to write something down and God could not have told them how everything came into being cause this would have been to complicated for them and they would not have understood it.

Dear Boy- Have you not read God's Word where it declares to take His Word- precept upon precept, line upon line? (Or as literally written?) Or that God declares even an unsaved person can understand the literal meaning of His Word?
Thats exactly what Bill is saying. So... why question God in His Word with proof to take it as such?
Besides, the majority of Jesus' Parables, if notice, are related to earthly events. so why not take the others which do not seem to, at the same "face value"?

I want to take the bible literally. But when I hear theologists say that everything needs to be interpreted then sometimes I become insecure and ask myself what if they're right and everything is different and I'm totally fundamental? Cause this is also what my father told me. He said I'm fundamental. But that's nothing to be ashamed of.

Frederik- Theologians teach assumptions based on many different things, rather than just the Literal meaning of God's Word.
There are philosophers who do it the same way, but along philosphical lines.
Neither group takes God's Word at face value, but try to read more into it than there really is. Thats where the problem starts. I've also read alot of literature where people were supposedly "inspired" by god with total "spiritualizing" of God's Word.
If read thier explainations, very few if any honestly share the real Truths of God's Word.

Yes.It's a pity that theologians spread their false stuff and people believe it cause they think that a theologist has to know it.

But what about God making Adam from dust?
Could this be a metaphor?
Once I visited a lecture in philosophy and the professor made it look like Genesis is a myth and he said that in Genesis God is shown as a craftsman who works with his hands and created Adam with his hands and then he said that this symbolism is used in many myths.
Do you really think that God made Adam from dust using his hands?

Frederik- the silly part of that whole idea is, secular scientists set out to prove man's physical body was not made of particles of the ground.
They were proven wrong. Instead, they proved the bible right, which truely irritated them. Don't quote me on this, but supposedly, this was to be one of the "finale's" the secular world was going to use to put christianity down but good. And It failed.
No, it's not a myth but actual proven fact, by the secular world no less.
God Bless Brother!!

You mean the body is made of particles in the ground? Such as?
Do you have a link or where did you read this?

All of the same things from the scientific "Periodic Table" that are found in the dirt, was also found in man's body. That covers all metal, chemical and other such things. (I'm sorry, I just can't think of the name they give these "things" right now).
God Bless!!

I understand what you mean, you mean all the chemical elements.

Yes, Yes- elements, thats the word. Thank you Frederik.

In the first place, you can stop getting your information about the Bible from Catholics!!!
STICK WITH THE WORD!!!

usually I do not talk to catholics

I would say it doesn't matter what religion it is, they all have misconceptions they teach of God's Word.
My point with all this, was to show, God took enough material from Adam's body, to make another for Eve, not being identical in looks, but in material so to speak.
an arguement between the secular and Christian years ago used to be that men have an equal number of ribs, therefore God could not have removed a rib form Adam or it would show in evidence today by way of gnerational inheritance.
In many of the later Bibles, the word "rib" was used. But, in most older ones, the word "flesh" is used. But, this matters not, as the original Hebrew translation meaning for both - part skin, muscle and bone etc is the original meaning.
How else could our physical body return to ashes and dust as God declares? Even bone breaks down if given long enough.
God Bless!!
