I received this repsonse when I asked her to pray for a marriage amendement (to say marriage is between one man and one woman):

May 23, 2005

Deleted my address here

Dear Miss Merk:

Thank you for contacting me regarding a possible amendment to
the Constitution that would define marriage as a union of a man
and a woman. As you are aware, President Bush endorsed such an
amendment. I oppose a constitutional amendment banning gay
marriage because I believe it is wrong to amend our Constitution to
limit the rights of any Americans. Further, I believe that marriage
laws should continue to be decided at the state level.

The framers intentionally imbued the Constitution with the
strength to survive centuries, but also the flexibility to be changed
by the will of the people. Yet it is rare that we take the
extraordinary step of altering the blueprint of our democracy. In
the more than two centuries since the Bill of Rights was ratified,
we have amended the Constitution just seventeen times.
Accordingly, I take any proposed amendment to the Constitution
very seriously, and I believe that we should reserve this option for
exceptional circumstances.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, we have revised the
Constitution only twelve times. Most of those amendments
expanded one of our most fundamental and cherished rights: the
right to vote. In 1920, we enfranchised women; in 1961, we
expanded the Electoral College to include the District of
Columbia; in 1964, we abolished the poll tax, a vestige of a nation
divided by race; and in 1971, we gave U.S. citizens age 18 and
over the right to vote. Other amendments of the last hundred years
modified the structure of our representative government, providing
for the popular election of Senators, limiting the President to two
terms, and providing a course of action should the President
become disabled while in office.

In modern times, with few exceptions, we have taken the
remarkable step of changing the Constitution to expand the right to
participate in our democratic system and to make structural
changes to our system of representative government. It would be
unprecedented to use this mechanism to restrict the rights of any
Americans.

Furthermore, as a general matter, I agree with Vice President
Richard Cheney's statement that "the fact of the matter is that
[marriage] is regulated by the states." I am committed to
supporting legislation that protects the rights of all Americans
regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion, gender, national
origin, age or disability.

Thank you again for contacting me to share your thoughts on this
matter. As always, I welcome your views on all issues, and I
appreciate the opportunity to have a direct dialogue with you. To
that end, you may be interested in signing up for my weekly update

Jesus
I pray you bring Maria To her knees with the power
of your Holy Spirit.
Lord let her see you are real, powerful and not to be denied
God speak straight to her heart and let her ears only hear
the call of her life to kneel at the throne of Christ
Let her see the world is death and life without Christ as
Savior and Lord is death.
Teach her reverent fear
and fill her with your Holy Spirit
Amen

Dear Lord, I ask, again, for the salvation of Maria Cantwell. I pray she is brought to repentence by the conviction of The Holy Spirit. Do not let her continue in her stubborn ways, standing against Your truth and principles. Show her that YOU are Lord, that YOUR ways are best, that YOUR ways are LIFE! Save her to the uttermost and let her stand for righteousness in America. Thank You, Lord, for saving her! In Jesus Name, amen.

I get the exact same letters from her and from Patty Murray. No matter what the subject of the email, they've got letters already printed up and ready to go.

Pray for them both!

Also pray for our REAL governor, Dino Rossi, to be given back his rightful place as Governor of Washington State.

Father God, in Jesus name, I ask you to give Patty, Marie and Christine dreams and visions of heaven OR hell every night until they are radically born again. Send Christians into their lives at every turn, every path. Remove the veil from their eyes and shine your light into their hearts. Give them a Godly reality check and a Godly EXTREME MAKEOVER! Turn them from darkness to light, from the power of satan to the power of God, manfiest yourself to them, LORD. Overshadow them with your power and FIRE and burn out all the darkness in them today! And Father, work it all out to the good, put Dino in his rightful place, voted by the majority of people, as Governor of Washington State! In Jesus name, amen, and let it be DONE!

Lord God, I lift up Patty Murray and Rick Larsen, as well. Save them both and save Maria. Lord, they all favor gay marriages. I pray that they are transformed, along with Christie G----- (don't know how to spell her name , and don't want to butcher it). Save all of these "elected" (Christine WASN'T!!!) officials. Dino Rossi is raising money to fight this false election, and I pray he gets it, and I pray the recount shows the truth. Lord, send us RIGHTEOUS legislators for Washington State! Bring someone to the fore who will run and beat Patty, Maria and Rick. Or SAVE Patty, Maria and Rick, that THEY are the righteous legislators we desire to have representing our state. Father, move in all this in mighty power. Send a heavy conviciton of the Holy Spirit upon all of these people, and, especially upon those who called for the recount for Christine but denied the recount to Dino. Lord, let Your will be done in all this, that Your glory may be shown. Turn this entire situation and the lives of these people around! I pray, in Jesus Name, amen.

Lord, I just heard they are trying to decide whether to keep the election rersults intact or to throw out the election, because of the falsified recount. Lord, this could be an answer to prayer. I pray that happens! I pray they can find a way to get a fair vote and fair count. I pray Dino Rossi is the governer, as he should be!

Lord, save Maria Cantwell, Christine Gregoire, Rick Larsen and Patty Murray. Work in each of their lives to bring them home to salvation. Whatever it takes, however long it takes, give them a chance to thear the gospel clearly presented and to repent of their sins. I pray Your grace is extended to them -- or that is they REALIZE it is extended to them. Let miracles happen in all of their lives, especailly the miracle of salvation and transformation into a new creation in Christ.

Thank You, Father, for hearing and answering! Amen!

Father, save Maria Cantwell and send this prayer to EVERY senator or representative who holds like views. This is such a lame way to get out of facing up to the damage they do to America -- saying this is unconsitutional -- when our forefather's never dreamed of a day when sin would be legislated into law. Father, convict Maria Cantwell and all others with these oinions. Show them Your truth. Move on them to move them to salvation. I plead Your blood over them, to seal them for their day of redemption. Let angels attend them, to minister to the heirs of salvation. Let us see TRANSFORMATION in Maria Cantwell's life and in Patty Murray and Rick Larsen's lives, as well as Christine Gregroires. Reach every friend and collegue and cohort of theirs in Washington DC and anywhere else. In Jesus Name, I pray, amen.

Here is the response I received from Rick Larsen:

Dear Jerena:

Thank you for your letter in support of amending the U.S. Constitution to define marriage. We are in agreement that same sex marriages should not be allowed, however we disagree on the need to amend the United States Constitution to address this problem.

As a general rule, I do not support amending the U.S. Constitution. Our Constitution has been amended only 27 times during our country's history. I candidly believe that given our country's current situation with high unemployment, a ballooning deficit, and troops overseas in harm's way, that our efforts now should be concentrated on supporting our troops and helping American families by creating jobs.

Furthermore, I am concerned with protecting states' rights and individual freedoms. Marriage has always been a state issue and should remain a state issue.

While we disagree on the issue of amending the Constitution to redefine marriage, I hope that you will continue to contact me to share your views.

Again, thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts. I hope all is well in Mount Vernon, Wa 98273, and I look forward to future correspondence.

Sincerely,
Rick Larsen

Here is the reply I received from Patty Murray:

Dear Miss Merk:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Federal Marriage Amendment. I am glad to know your views on this matter.

In 1996, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was enacted into law. DOMA created the first federal definition of marriage: one woman and one man. This law also lets states choose whether to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. In addition, 38 states--including Washington--have passed equivalents of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

Vermont allows gay and lesbian couples to register for civil unions, while California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Hawaii and New Jersey have limited domestic partnership statutes. On November 18, 2003, Massachusetts' highest court ruled 4-3 in Goodridge et al. v. Department of Public Health that under that state's constitution, same-sex couples may not be denied the right to obtain civil marriage licenses. This ruling does not affect the right of religious organizations to decide what rituals they perform for whom.

There will likely be efforts in Massachusetts to amend the state constitution to effectively reverse the Court's decision. Alaska and Hawaii chose to do so when their highest courts ruled that same-sex couples had a right to marry. However, the Massachusetts Constitution takes at least 3 years to amend, so a similar amendment could not be ratified before late 2006. Because the case was decided under the Massachusetts Constitution by the highest court in that state, it cannot be appealed, and virtually ensures that Massachusetts will become the first state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. After that happens, legal challenges to state and federal DOMA laws are likely, as are cases involving American gay and lesbian couples who have obtained marriage licenses in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario.

In 2004, Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO.) introduced Senate Joint Resolution 30 - the Federal Marriage Amendment -- to amend the United States Constitution to define marriage as a union of one man and one woman. In July of that year, the full Senate debated S.J.Res 30 and a majority of Senators voted against further consideration of the constitutional amendment. The vote against considering the constitutional amendment was 50-48. I voted against further consideration of the Federal Marriage Amendment. I do not believe we should use the United States Constitution to take away individual freedoms.

Amending the Constitution is a serious step--one we have taken just 27 times in the 215 years since the Constitution was ratified and 17 times since the Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791. With the exception of prohibition, which was repealed 14 years later, the Bill of Rights has never been amended to restrict our rights. The Constitution leaves marriage to be regulated by the states rather than the federal government. The states set rules and requirements governing civil marriage, while the Constitution's "full faith and credit" clause guarantees that marriages and many other functions such as contracts, divorces and drivers' licenses valid in one state must be recognized by all states. In due time, the courts will fulfill their intended role by ruling on this clause and its bearing on the constitutionality of state and federal DOMA laws.

America is a strong nation, and our diversity only makes us stronger. But if we are to remain so, we cannot afford to waste time or energy dividing and conquering each other. Our nation will be best off when we appreciate each other's differences and treat all Americans with respect and dignity.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to call on me in the future if I can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Patty Murray
United States Senator

Dear Lord, send the conviction of The Holy Spirit upon Maria Cantwell, Rick Larsen, Patty Murray and Christine Gregroire. I pray Chrsitine feels guilty for taking the governorship when she did not win fair and square. Straighten that issue out. I pray that we have THE RIGHTEOUS ruling! Then we can rejoice, rather than groan. Please, Father God, SAVE these folks! Let them vote for righteousness in the future, so this nation can be exalted. We need some CHRISTIANS to be legislators representing this state. Give us some, just as You gave us Linda Smith a few years back. Father, we ask that You save those who represent us now, that CHRISTIANS may be represented and not every other group out there BUT us. Lord, work over time to bring these people to repentance and salvation! I pray to see miracles in the Washington State legislators and mulitply it to every state (Definitely, redeem Mr. Durbin, who would dare make such hurtful comments about our military!!!). Father God, thank You for saving them. In Jesus Name, amen.

Lord, give us Godly legislators to represent the State of Washington. I pray that these listed here are saved -- or that those who are already saved get voted in. Father, I pray this nation will return to You and the Godly roots it was founded on. Lord, revolutionize the entire system of government by giving us those who are born again and Spirit filled! I pray for a total turn around in the halls of Congress and and the Senate. Let mighty things be done in and through the lives of these people and their predecessors, in Jesus Name, amen.

I don't understand what the big deal is here... Ms. Cantwell, Ms. Murray and Mr. Larsen are right... a Constitutional Ammendment defining marriage is ridiculous.

Look at our Constitution sometime... it's all about defining our freedoms, not restrictions. In fact, the only restrictive Ammendment, the 18th, was repealed 14 years later because it was restrictive!

The U.S. Constitution is an awesome document, defining an amazing republic! May it continue always to define our freedoms and never become a list of restrictions!!!
