TV addiction

Lord, this TV addiction MUST go! My family and friends sit on the TV for HOURS.... sometimes, so do I.
This thing is driving me crazy! It's like if they don't hear NOISE at every minute they can't function. My niece was watching a show (with some kind of rude comments about women) and reading a book at the same time. Is that necessary? Man! I called my Sister and she kept commenting to me about eveything that was on the TV in her home. This "Law and Order" addiction (don't care if I'm meddling with some folks on here) is too much. I don't appreciate the language! I don't want to fill my mind with the vain philosiphies of men! Don't care if I'm accused of being too spiritual. We must draw a line somewhere. And some shows just ARE NOT expeident for us! They are not helping us grow in God; they are not encouraging good morals; they are not feeding us with LIFE!!! YOU ARE THE LIFE and I want to be fed with YOUR LIFE -- not with the drivel on most TV shows. Lord, PLEASE show my family the true riches in seeking Jesus.
I have been accused of being a recluse because I want to seek You -- spend lots of time alone to seek You. Well, I am alone, in part, to get away from the noise of the TV. How can I hear YOU with the TV rambling on? These are people who turn the TV on the MINUTE they are in the room. They know all the shows they like and exactly WHAT hours they are on. My niece gets home from work and she goes right up to her room and puts on some favorite TV show.
They know the TV shows and hours they are on, but do they KNOW YOU? Are they even taking time for YOU? Not trying to preach or be holier than thou (and I, too, sit on the TV too much at times -- and usually regret it). But, Lord, I want them to WANT YOU!!! I want them to know the joy of QUIET time spent with You! Not have them turn the TV on the minute they wake up, and keep it running from that time on, every minute they are home. Hey, I have been guilty of going entire days without watching any TV.
And I don't miss it. TV IS NOT my life!!! They act like it's theirs. If they have no more excitement than what can be found in that little box, then they need to GET A LIFE! NOT ME! I have been told to get a life because I pray on here so much and becuase I spend so much time alone with You. Well.... TV IS NOT A LIFE!!! It's a bunch of made up stories to entertain and titilate. I was just down stairs and some guy was cussing on some TV show my niece and my friend are watching..... I don't want to HEAR that! I want to hear YOUR SWEET VOICE!!! I hear the TV voice vibrating up through the floor or wall....
Is there no way to get FREE of that noise???
Lord, if it's not TV, it's video games. Set my nephwes (especially the one) FREE of this video game addiction! It seems like his entire life REVOLVES around video games. It's all he talks about, dreams about, wants to buy, plans ways to get.... on and on. It drives me nuts the way he talks about video games and machines so much!!!
Lord God, set my family free of this Ameircan addiction! We must get off the TV, away from the video games, alone in the prayer closet, seeking Your face. Convict my family! Make them hungry for You, not some TV show (even the most Godly ones). Father, break off this NEED for TV. Take away their dependence on this constant sound and company. Let them quit living out their lives through the lives of those on TV shows.
I kept telling my Sister on vacation that the TV had to go, that it was not the answer, but she didn't seem to be listening. She is sitting on the TV too much, because she is depressed about the divorce. Well, it's not healing her marriage, it's not stopping the divorce, it's not helping her get whole. It's just putting false ideas in her head about what's right. I know she is till DOING right, but she can't criticize his unGodly music, then insist it's OK to watch unGodly TV shows. They are touting the same lies as his music.
OK, Lord, had to get this out. Rant a little. Get it off my chest. This TV thing just irks me!
I get tired of being told to get a life, but when I tell them to get off the TV, they just keep watching as if that is something exciting. And what ISN'T life giving about time in Your Presence?????????? If I want the TV off, so I can hear from You, is that not FAR BETTER?
Christians priorities seem to be all messed up. I get accused of being too spiritual, so they can ease their concious at the junk they watch, I guess. I have Christians tell me something is a good movie, then I watch it, and guess what?
There is a sex scene in it!!!
Why do I need to see that? I am single and trying to stay pure until marriage, and some Christian says Such And Such is a good movie. Do they think I need this temptation set before me? That my hormones won't be roused by seeing that? Come on! We are supposed to stir each other up to love and good works, so much more as the day approaches.
OK, I'm preaching, Lord. Preaching in my prayer. Well, this has been bothering me a while and a long time. Why is it necessary to find the least possible evil movie to watch and make excuses for what's in it, because it's not as bad as some other movie? I am told to guard my heart. So I choose not to watch many things that are out there. Someone likes this movie where the guy laughs when his wife is divorcing him! Hunh? He marries the girl who got pregnant by her professor.... which makes everything dandy OK for her. And they totatlly ignore that in REAL life that girl would be a struggling, single mother.... barely able to pay her bills. No prince charming would come along to rescue her. More than likely, she would repeat the mistake with another man, then be a single mother raising TWO kids.... etc.
Anyway, Lord, can You please remove this TV addiction from those around me? You know everyone I mean! Show this family and my friends how to seek YOU rather than fill every minute with television. Teach them to SHUT THE TV OFF and get alone with You. I so desire to see them hungry for You, not babysitting themselves with TV. TV has got to quit being our friend, comforter, excitement, outlet, pacifier, babysitter, company and the rest.
I'm with Benny Hinn. Nothing breaks the anointing quicker than TV. So let it be turned OFF in homes and KEPT OFF in homes. Let people get HUNGRY for You and YOU alone! Let them desire YOUR PRESENCE, not the presence of some TV characters. I feel like TV is the greatest detrement to Your Presence and seeking You of anything I know of. How easy to just sit there and watch and watch.... I have done it, too!
And the hours just creep by.... and before I know it, it's bed time. And did the I spend any quality time with the Lord? Often not. And not AS MUCH TIME as I spent on TV. Thankfully, I don't do this too often....
TBN is good, but even that can replace the PERSONAL, ONE ON ONE seeking of You. If I just let the TV personalities do all the praising, all the teaching, all the reading of The Word, all the prophesying, all the preaching.... how will I get to know You and Your Still Small Voice for myself? How will I get to come deep into The King's Chamber and commune with You face to face? Oh, Lord, please draw me DEEP into The King's Chamber! Please remove the desire to sit in front of the TV for hours and let it lull me to sleep (spiritually, I mean)! Father, I like TBN, though I haven't been able to watch recently. I wish I could see it more. But, still, it all comes down to how much time am I giving to You, in ALONE time, seeking You personally? Get me off the TV and into seeking You, whether it's TBN or no.
Get my family and friends off the TV and into seeking You. OK, this is a long prayer. But it's a problem!
Intervene, Lord, and stop this TV madness!!!
In Jesus Name, I pray, amen.

Better rest from this rant....

I am with you t.v. has become such a strong hold in peoples lifes,I was thinking about it today.the world is so influneced by the t.v. and the views expressed.also marketing and every thing seems to be about image.we as a nation have become just life imitating art.the way we dress the way we talk the way we actuly see the world has changed cuz of t.v..If something so triviel as entertainment has become resonponible for changing a morjority of americas perspective then we are in trouble, and we are!I see the stars and all of thier glory, just pillars of self indulgence, and in this matter our people have become so self glory orianted,by imulating them and thier life style.so much is controled by companys in every pruduct for thier own moneys sake selling us essentualy life styles.buy this youll be happy or wear this you will look good,or drink this beer and you will be popular and funny and have a happy partying life. And I have seen first hand how the quest to assertain this set perfection portayed by the tv has lead people in thier every day lifes. How have we gotten to a point were the t.v. teaches how to live?wow it mind blowing!Entertainment has made us morally bankrupt, planting seeds of all kinds of ungodly things in our nations minds, set an unreal standard of the way people shoud look ,and changed our precpective on so much(I could talk for an hour just on perspective but I wont)and marketing has made us superfical, vain and materialistic. We as a nation need to learn more about Jesus and spend some hours seeking his face.he is our idol we should imulate his nature.I do belive their are demonic strong holds in all of this,I even saw a little man floting above my tv a few weeks ago which I now belive was a demon.we have to gaurd our eyes and ears,to keep pure.if you dont belive me that thier is demonic activity in entertainment take this in consideration.
when the passion of christ was in the theaters it was at the #1 spot for a while,I was whatching the news one day and it said the the passion of christ finaly lost its #1 spot to a movie called "HellBoy"that really put it in precpective for me.

Thanks, Blake. Part of what set off this prayer was that I got sucked into the TV addiction today. They weren't awful shows; two were the back to back episodes of "Little House on The Prarie." Praise the Lord for a show that at least backs Biblical principles! But, it was the HOURS I spent, and before I new it.... where had the day gone? I was going to call my Sister around 2, and the next thing I knew I was calling her closer to 5....
Before I finally shut the TV off, that lovely M*A*S*H show came on, and the doctors were getting drunk (how then could they perform the surgeries?) and Frank was cheating on his wife ("I'm a happily married man.") with Major Hulihan.... Yeeks!
And we just sit there and let this stuff run on (gulity!!! at least today
).
Perhaps, we should start an accontability thread: How many hours of TV did you watch today? What shows did you watch? How much time did You spend seeking God? Etc.
Lord, please teach me what I already know: If I get sucked into watching too much TV, I always regret it. I miss the time I could have spent with You. I feel cheated out of my day. Teach me, Lord, that I CAN avoid the TV or I CAN shut it off, if someone else left it on.... Teach me, when I'm feeling bored or tired (the two times I most give in) that ANYTHING is better than putting on the TV -- prayer, praise music, reading a Christian book, especially the Bible, getting alone with You, doing something creative, coming on anointed.net to pray, wathcing one of my Christian music videos.... I usually put the TV on when I'm preparing dinner, too, so help me stop that practice. Even if I just come up and lay down -- so what if I fall asleep? -- it's better to keep the TV off.
I have all these good movies that promote better values. Why then do I end up turning on the TV and perusing the dial to see what's on? Often, when I do that, I get hooked on some movie that has something immoral or sinful or Godless or whatever in it, but by then, I'm hooked and want to see how it turns out....
Is there a demon on the remote? Well, our remote quit working, and I still like to peruse the dial to see what's on.... What is this all about? I know it's mostly garbage, and I never find much to watch. So why do I go through this American ritual?
Like you, I could go on for hours!

I am guilty too I have been watching soo much t.v.and it take away from my bible reading,I also watch m*a*s*h a lot,I am probaly the only teenager who likes that old show.

Stupid TV! I just went down to prepare a midnight snack, then I went to see what was on TV. Only for a few minutes, but one can't deny the pull TV has, and one would like for this pull not to be so strong. I had told Jesus I was going to have a "picnic" with Him, because we have not spent much time together today, as far as me just being in His Presence.... and, even though I knew that way my plan, I had to go flip on the TV, as if I'd rather eat my snack watching TV. It was the Disney channel, and Lizzie McGuire was on. Not the worst show in history, but still the enticement of TV is crazy!

Finding HIM in spite of TV

A teenager who knows the value of seeking God? Awesome! Gives me hope for my nieces and nephews! Of course, how hard was I seeking God as a teen? You just made my day, though. I worry my nieces and nephews will never realize how aweome spending time with God is as opposed to TV, movies, video games and so on. But my nephews plan to go into the military, and can they play vdeo games in a humpvee (sp?) -- what my nephew said he is going to live in?

I did not mean to insinuate that no teens know the value of seeking God, for I know of some who do. Right now, I guess I am just driven by concern for my family. My one nephew is bored with church and was bored even in Jerry's meetings.
He stood up against his Dad when his Dad was pushing this cult garbage, so he knows what's right. And that gives me hope that he will make the choice to seek God and not be so addicted on video games.
I just don't see much of a personal devotional life in any of my family. When I hear the TV on, first thing, in my nieces room (morning sacred time to me, time to spend with God, and I won't put the TV on until later, if at all), I assume she isn't spending personal time, one on one with God. I know she prays on the go sort of deal and throughout the day. They all go to church and Christian concerts and so on.... but we are changed from glory to glory. It's only to the amount they seek God and get in His glory that they will be changed. We get some of that in church, but the services are short, so then, the rest of the week, it's the daily seeking God for ourselves -- and even on Sunday we must seek God. The Bible says "Early in the morning will I seek Him." So it's frustrating to hear them put the TV on first thing in the morning. That should be God's time. He should get the FIRST of everything!
Dear Lord, keep working with ALL of us in this! Remove ALL TV addictions off ALL people needing it. Let us feed ourselves on You, not on the stuff on TV, even if it's a better show. Help us to seek You EARLY and LATE and MIDDAY. Help us seek You, period.

Thanks, Frederik.
I came home from work just a few minutes ago. And what was the first thing I wanted to do? Put the TV on!
I didn't do it, but I sure wanted to! What is the PULL of TV? Well, even as I sit here typing, I am wondering what's on. I'm tired, and I just want to kick back and relax.... Why with the TV and not in one on one time with God?
I know which is of more value. But the TV has such a lure.... A box full of the things of the world. That seems to be what it comes down to: Will I go God's way or be distracted by the things of the world?
Dear Lord, help me in my quest to be pretty much TV free. To just BE STILL AND KNOW YOU ARE GOD in times when I have time "to kill." I pray that I don't go down and sit on the TV, when I should be spending time with You or praying for people on here or reading Your Word, or doing SOMETHING that will strengthen me spiritually. Lord God, PLEASE let me keep my priorities straight. Let me not give into the weakness that says "I'm tired, I'm bored.... Put your brain in neutral," to coin a Randy Stonehill phrase from a song he wrote. Father, I want to fill my mind with good things. And even if it's a good TV show, I would rather take that time to seek You one on one, personally. Help me, Lord, to be faithful to chase after You with all of me. I pray that I will not just let the TV run on. Give me the strength to shut the dial OFF when it's been on too long, and help me not to turn it on in the first place, if it's simply to fill in time. Help me not to run to food, either!!! I don't want to watch TV, and I feel so weary and sore, I just think I should eat. Help me find postivie, life affirming replacements for both of these comforts. Just keep working with me on my quest toward wholeness.... In Jesus Name, amen! (Help my family, too!)

Maybe it helps you if you turn on the TV zap through all channels and then realize that there's nothing interesting.
I hardly watch normal TV cause it's so primitive. The few times where I watch TV I watch movies on pay tv but you can forget about the normal stuff on TV.
Posted by: MamaCat
Since I have Sky Angel I have plenty of good Christian TV to choose from. About 90% of time I am watching something on that.
Frederik, have you ever watched the 700 Club? It's only an hour, but they have wonderful stories of healing and salvations, prayer time, they answer questions people email in to them, they teach about the Bible, they have news stories, etc. If you can't get it on any TV channels there, you should be able to get it on their web site, since they have Streaming Video of it. It's on five days a week too. I think you'd learn a lot and really enjoy it.
Posted by: JeriRose12
What's on Pay Per View that's good?
The 700 club IS good. I usually am still sleeping, after working a closing shift or going off to work for a morning shift (or already at work), so I miss it a lot. I miss Praise the Lord a lot, too, because of closing. When I'm tired is the biggest temptation. Earlier, I was watching "Behind the Scenes" on TBN, where he was reading really touching letters about how Christina TV is changing lives in countries where they are persecuted for their fatih. Awesome stuff! Then, Hal Lindsey came on and shared some info I really want to pray about, regarding Israel and what Bush is saying about letting the Palestinians have their land (see my thread in "Pray for Israel and Country" for more details). I fell asleep at the end of this.
I do peruse the channels, Frederik. Then, I go back to see what I missed during the commercials....
and what I missed during THOSE commercials.... I know nothing good is on. I've said it many times myself. Well, to be honest, I am being hard on myself. I don't do this near as much as I used to, hardly at all anymore. My family has a bigger TV addiction. I usually don't have the TV on in my apartement before 12 noon. Sometimes, I will watch Benny Hinn at 11:30, then I will go back to seeking God. Since I am switching to morning shifts, I usually just spend the morning in prayer or quiteness until I go to work. I hardly put it on all morning before I went to my closing shifts at 4 or 5 PM. I would usually watch a little when I came home after closing, at 11:30 P.M. So, I'm not one of those six or seven hours a day people.
I do really want to see my family free, and one day, in prayer, the Lord told me he would show my niece that she needed to not watch so much TV and needed to spend more time with Him.
My nephew, Joshua, concerns me, because he often doesn't want to go places, just stay home and play video games.
Well, thanks for all prayers.
Do any channels air "Touched By an Angel" anymore? I used to get it on Hallmark, but they moved it from the 8 PM time.

Not much of anything on Pay Per View is good to watch, why do you ask?
Posted by: JeriRose12
Because Frederik said he watches movies on pay TV. I thought they were worse than the regular fair. He said I can forget regular TV. He seemed to be inisinutating there were some good movies I could watch on pay TV.
So, what kinds of movies are you watching on pay TV, Frederik? Anything good?
Did anyone see this really cool movie on TBN, that was about Samaritan's Purse, but a ficitional story? I wish I knew the name and how to get a copy. It must be a Billy Graham Association movie, becasue they advertised some of those when it was over.

Funny you should mention Hallmark. Sky Angel and Daystar had some dispute awhile back and Daystar didn't renew their contract with Sky Angel, so they replaced the DayStar network with......the Hallmark Channel! Wow, I LOVE IT. Wonderful CLEAN, HEALTHY, HEART WARMING movies, even movies with God in them, where people PRAY! What a concept eh? I am enjoying it SO MUCH.
I can watch Daystar on DISH, so I wasn't too concerned that SkyAngel doesn't have them now. Sky Angel has also added the Hallmark Movie Channel. GOOD STUFF.
Posted by: JeriRose12
I love "Little House on the Prarie"! Those used to be on Hallmark. Since I don't watch a lot of TV, I'm not sure when they are on. Someone shows two "Little House" episodes back to back around 3 or 4 PM. Maybe that's Hallmark. I don't appreciate that m*a*s*h show that Hallmark shows, though. Kind of got hooked on "Walker, Texas Ranger." Chuck Norris is a Christian.

Finding HIM in spite of TV.

My 12 year old complained of how much TV we were watching. She wants to spend more quality time with me, and we do now. That is when I started getting online more coming to this site. Now she doesn't like me being on the computer so much, she sees it as a substitute for the TV. I work full time and I'm tired when I get home from a grueling job. We started devotionals in the morning, but it is hit and miss. Usually by the end of the week I am getting up later and later (I have a 25-40 minute commute to work), so run out of time to have devotionals. I listen to ministries on the radio and through CD's while driving, which is a blessing. Now I want to purchase the bible on CD so I can listen to it in the car. My brother told me about the free audio bible on-line at Blue Letter Bible dot org or com. I have listened to it while on-line here, but not yet just by itself. Anything that we set up as being very important in our lives, especially taking more of our free time than what we spend with the Lord, is an idol. We worship it by giving it our time and energy. I find that children who watch it a lot have a hard time using their minds to figure things out and it affects their ability to comprehend when they read or to develop reasoning and problem solving skills. These skills are not developed because they're "mindlessly" watching TV (minds are on auto-pilot, taking in someone's world view masked as entertainment). Just about anything can be used for good or evil, but let's face it, addictions to TV are running rampant in this world. Without the self control to set up parameters for watching TV, it is too dangerous to mess with. I also love TBN and know that the network is a godsend to people who are closed in and in other countries where they can get the word by satelite. But those of us who have every access to the Word need to get it directly from God by spending that time alone with Him, and then watch some TBN as we're able. You are right, that is what developes our Christian character and how we can know God's direction for our lives and how we develop intimacy with Him, not through someone else, but through our very own relationship with Him.
Thank you for this word and may God use it to convict the consciences of Christians who have elevated it to the status of idol, especially parents who let their children watch what they want, when they want.
Dear Father, hear our cry and deliver us and all our brothers and sisters who are addicted to TV from the life sucking, spirit sucking demonic influence. Give us the grace and strength to deny ourselves and take up the cross and follow You.
It has been in my heart and I've told my daughter I don't want to renew my contract with a satellite company, which is up the first of next month. Pray I will stand by my committment to do this for the sake of our spiritual lives. In Jesus Name.

I watch NASCAR. It's about 3 hours for a race on Sunday. I also go outside to talk on the phone (My BIG addiction!) I watch TV 3 nights a week- Wednesday Thursday and Sunday because they play old punk videos on VH1 Classic. I like the new Christian music, but I grew up with those old punk/new wave bands and it's like visiting old friends!
I was a fan of "The Biggest Loser", except for the voting off part. Occasionally I catch "Dr. Phil" (the man SO wants to go there!) His mother is a Southern Baptis and he slips every once in awhile- I'm waiting for him to lose it one day and just go,"You know why you have these problems? You don't have the Lord in your life, that's why!!"
I used to love Law & Order, but now that Lenny's gone, what's the point?
I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) so I'm one of those people who needs background noise. But I can accomplish that with music. I have some of those CDs of relaxation music and I listen to those on my Walkman while I read. My time eater is the computer and the phone.
