Why were adulterers stoned in these times? This is kind of scary.
Wasn't God mercyful at these times?

Do you stay up nights thinking up of all these questions????

Posted by: Frederik

No.
If I did this I would have even more questions..

Father, I thank you for another opportunity to trust Your Word, in Jesus' name.

Mr. Frederik, The Mosaic Laws, or better yet, The Law of Moses, was the Law of the day for Old Testament Saints. It would be equivalent to our Federal, State, and Local municipality laws that govern our society today. Relative to your question about people being stoned for adultery, you'll find God's standard on this topic outlined in Leviticus Chapter 20 and verse 10, where it is written, "And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adultress shall surely be put to death."

But why were they stoned back in the days and Jesus did not stone the adulterous woman?
Does this mean God changed from strict to mercyful during the time?
Why did Jesus have mercy and in the old testament the people were stoned?

Jesus had compassion on the adulterous woman because she could not commit adultery by herself, and the crowd of people that were about to stone the woman, did not reveal who the man was. So Jesus said, in all of His wisdom, "Let He who is without sin cast the first stone," and since no one came forth to throw the first stone, Jesus told the woman to go because she had no accusers there.

But if God wanted adulterers to be stoned in the OT then why not also in the NT? I dont understand this.

That's easy. It's because Jesus fulfilled the Law, and we are now under a dispensation of GRACE. And Grace is unmerited FAVOR. So although God is still against adultery, Jesus has already paid the price for all of our sins PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. His BLOOD cleanses us from sin and makes us right with GOD, even though we don't deserve it. It's because of Jesus' work that we don't get stoned anymore.....
