Two Prayer Requests:

1) Conflict between ethnic groups increase

Sri Lanka peace shakes as Tigers edge towards return
to arms 15/07/2005

Tamil Tiger rebels today announced they may start
using their own armed escorts for guerrillas
travelling through government-held areas, defying Sri
Lanka’s three-year-old ceasefire and pushing it to the
brink of collapse.

European ceasefire monitors have entered emergency
talks with the government on how to prevent the island
nation from plunging back into war.

The guerrillas gave the government two weeks to
improve the security or risk renewed warfare, setting
a deadline that passed on Thursday.

They began shutting down political offices in
government areas the same day, while government
security forces went on high alert.

This week’s spate of attacks on security forces was
the most intense since the 2002 ceasefire, said
spokeswoman Helen Olafsdottir of the European team
monitoring the accord. “The situation is a nightmare
and most dangerous,” she said.

2) Tensions toward Christians on the rise again

Attacks on churches, as recorded by the National
Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka and other
sources, during May and June, 2005.

Here are two churches as examples:

May 15: The pastor of an Assembly of God (AOG) church
in Kesbewa, Colombo district, learned that a protest
was planned during Sunday services on May 15. Police
provided security while 100 church members met in the
shell of their church hall, which was previously set
on fire by a Buddhist mob in September 2003. During
the service, a large crowd of around 500 people,
including 100 monks, arrived and began shouting
Buddhist chants. They entered the garden, put up
Buddhist flags and verbally abused the pastor and
congregation. After two and a half hours, the police
asked the pastor and church members to leave in order
to defuse the situation. The mob dispersed but
demanded that the church be closed down permanently.
The mob warned that another two churches in the area
would be targeted the following week.

June 5: An AOG church in Ambalangoda purchased a new
property on June 4 after its previous building was
destroyed in the December 2004 tsunami. On the night
of June 5, rocks, stones and bottles filled with sand
were thrown at the building, damaging windows.

June 6: The same church was attacked at 10 a.m. by a
mob of 100 men armed with iron rods, shovels, swords
and other weapons. The mob returned at noon and
remained seated on the boundary wall, shouting
threats. At around 3 p.m. the pastor arrived; he and
two other church members were severely beaten and
required hospital treatment. The mob also damaged the
boundary wall and the van in which the pastor was
traveling. The pastor’s wallet, identity cards and
mobile phone were also stolen.

Jesus
I ask for a covering over these places
I battle with the municipalities of darkness ruling these places and people.
Silence this violence, this hatred.
God come into these places and be a light
Move in a mighty way!!

Lord we place Sri Lanka within Your hands. Pour Your blood upon this nation and empower Your Christians their. Let their annointing be evident especially among those who would harm them and use the lives of those who have viciously attacked Your Sons, use this situation to bring them closer to You rather than against You. For You are the merciful, forgiving God and thankfully this is our greatest strength in You that by forgiving them we pour coals upon their heads. This is true but i ask that You are merciful to them and instead totally forgive them and let all Your children who are affected personally by this incident to fully forgive them and to do kindness and to show love to those who have hurt them. Lead and give opportunity in the Holy Spirit to do this, supernatural and devine appointments that they may be turned from hatred into followers of Christ. In Jesus name.

I hold up and thank You that You are there within the pain and that in time You will bless a thousand fold what Your pastors and people have gone through in pain and suffering. Thanks be to God that You reward us with comfort and within life that we receive reward and that within Heaven the reward of love is soooooooo much bigger than we can imagine. Be very intimate and specific with these warriors Lord. For Your comfort and grace is pure gold to us. In Jesus name.
