Why do people ultimatively go to hell?

The bible says that the wage of sin is death, right?
Does this mean if a person only did 1 sin in here life then this would be enough to go to hell and stay there forever? I guess so. But somehow this seems so radical. Or is it rather that nobody who has sinned can get to heaven and because of this he has to go to hell? For example when somebody steals a chewing gum is this such a bad sin that the punishment for it would be burning in hell forever?
Or do people only go to hell for not accepting Jesus? Is it more about sin or more about not wanting to accept Jesus?

There is NO ONE on this earth who falls into this category. NO ONE. Only Jesus lived a sinless life. The rest of us:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23)

What does this verse say to you?

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23)

*Notice "sin" is singular. That means sin all sin is equal. So pilfering that piece of gum is EQUAL to murder in the eyes of God. While some religions weigh sin differently (ie: mortal sins, carnal sins, deadly sins, little white sins) GOD weighs them all the same. Death is eternal separation from God, meaning eternity in Hell.

"No one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again" (John 3:3)

What does this verse say to you?

"I I am the truth, the way and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6)

What does this verse say to you?

"If you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, 'Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame' " (Romans 10:9-11)

What does this verse say to you?

"He died for all that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him Who died for them and was raised again." (2 Corinthians 5:15)

What does this verse say to you?

" 'Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with Me.' " (Revelation 3:20)

What does this verse say to you?

*****************************************

1. Are you a sinner? ___yes ____no

2. Do you want forgiveness for your sin? ____yes ____no

3. Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you and rose again? ___Yes ___no

4. Are you willing to surrender your life to Christ? ____yes ___no

5. Are you ready to invite Jesus into your life and into your heart? ___yes ___no

Frederik, you can put all of your doubts and fears and indecisions and confusion to bed once and for all. With Jesus, there are no loopholes, no discrepencies, no contradictions. Make no mistake, God will not just wink and let sinners slip by and into heaven! "Good" people go to Hell every day. Priests, pastors, bishops, nuns, deacons, missionaries, grandparents, good Samaritans, gold-card carrying tithers, volunteers, confirmed, baptized, sealed, people who believe in God. If they are unsaved and hauling around unconfessed sin, they will spend eternity in Hell, separated from God.
How 'bout you? If you died RIGHT NOW where will you spend eternity? Smoking or non-smoking?

Hooo, that was so beautiful an answer I have nothing to add.

God Bless you Marksentme!! I pray that answers your question my young friend. God Bless you in all ways too!!

But if all sins are equal then why does the bible also say that the punishment in hell will not be the same for everybody? I guess Hitler will suffer more than the usual atheist.

Brother-

When God speaks of all sin being equal, He speaks of this in context to our not being able to look at any others being better or worse than anyone else. That way, as God declares, if we follow Him correctly, we will not judge another, but leave judgement of them to God.

Why? Because- Sin entered the world by one man and death by sin. And this sin was passed unto all flesh by that one man. This is why God reserves judgement of our sins for Him only, as how else would it be fesible for a sinful person themselves to be allowed to pass judgement on another sinful persn? Seee the point?

God Bless!!

People go to hell because they choose to. God has given us Free will and many people now days either refuse to accept Jesus as their Lord & Savior or they chose to go there. They have the choice and God the Father will not intervene in their decision.

But, by the grace of God we chose to accept the free gift of eternal salvation through our faith in Jesus who died on the cross for our sins.

Angelofthelord is quite correct- To add to that, the reason sin does have different levels of punishment say for in Hell, is because God is a rightceous Father who realizes the ones who refuse Him and His word, must be punished, just as His True children will be rewarded with stored up treasures in heaven.

Besides, remember a long time ago I mentioned to you what Christ had said in comparing the City of Capernaum to Sodom and Gomorah? That it would be better for Sodom than for Capernaum in Hell, as one hadn't heard the Word preached, so is there in ignorance, while the other did hear, but refused It?

Thus is the reason for levels of punishment according to sins committed. It has to do with the moral part of which you and I cannot judge about people, for we know not why people do things, but God does.

God Bless!!

This would mean that atheists which have heard the gospel many times and rejected it are punished harder than atheists which only heard it once, right?

Posted by: MarkSentMe

Atheists have heard the word and choose to reject it. They believe in the existance of God, yet choose to reject His ways. The Bible states that the only unforgiveable sin is rejection of the Holy Spirit. If an atheist repents and turns from his/her sin and accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, they are forgiven of all sins; past, present and future.
When we go out and witness to people, they choose whether or not to accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For some, the contact is the first time they have ever heard the Gospel. If they choose to reject Jesus and continue in their atheist life, then the "ignorance of the Law" excuse is null and void.

I have not read the varying degrees of punishment in the Gospel, but I have much to learn. Are you sure you're not reading "Dante's Inferno"?

Athiests, according to definition, are those who do not believe in any god, be it God the Father, other false gods or that man can become one either. Thus, they usaully live by chance and no reasoning for it, except maybe evolution or something.

It doesn't matter if a person has heard the Gospel preached once or more times, rejecting it brings the same level of punishment, no more or less for hearing It and rejecting it more, as one who's heard It only once and rejected It.

The main question and answer in this posting was about levels of punishment. Yes there are in Hell because of the types of sin and how often it was done, plus rejection of the Gospel if heard It to not so.

theres a big difference between ignorance of doing things wrong and knowingly doing things wrong.

God Bless!!
