Circumcision?

I have read and read in the Bible where men were circumcised. This is a common practice for boys born here in the U.S. But in Europe, circumcision is not very widely practiced. We spent 3 years in germany and whenever we went to the public swim areas, we noticed almost all of the boys were uncircumcised. (Not that we were looking, Europeans are not as worried about their bodies as Americans tend to be)
So just when did the practice of circumcision come about? What led the first person to decide to remove the foreskin from his privates? I know this is a big Jewish tradition (they have a party for it and all!), and I know Jesus was circumcised, but why not the Christians in Europe?

This began when God made a covenant with Abraham.
it was as a reminder of that covenant.
It is a physical circumcision and a symbolic circumcision of the heart
Just as communion is a reminder of Christ's sacrafice.
"Do this in remembrance of me"
God knows man is weak and a reminder is needed daily
to remember him.
He also calls us to be equally yoked
to be careful not to adopt
the pagan ways of the people of other countries or people.
Circumcision is a way the jews knew each other.
It is also healthier from a cleanliness point of view.
Europeans are not as concerned
with being as clean as we are.
When I worked at one of the largest Medical Centers
In the United States, every woman I spoke with
that had cervical cancer also had an uncircumcised spouse
