Marriage Restoration--Praying the Root? or the Fruit?

Matthew 3:10
"The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
When praying for marriage restoration, or for any need, one thing I know I need to be reminded of from time to time is this: Am I praying against the root, or am I praying against the fruit?
You can pluck all the fruit off of a tree, and it may look different from the outside, but unless you sever the root the tree will continue to produce bad fruit!
