Does the devil send counterfit visions and dreams?

A number of years ago, my family dealt with a situation where this person began telling us false words of knowledge about some people in leadership. After that, we had visions that seemed to confirm everything they said. Once we realized they were lying and this was not from God, we questioned the visions we saw (vivid ones!) that seemed to confirm every word.
Can the devil send visions or dreams to confuse us? If so, how is he able to? Or does he just play on the words spoken?
What about if an unsaved person told me they had a dream about me and it had evil content and a bad future for me (as in turning away from the Lord to worship the devil)? If Christians have God dreams, do the unsaved have devil dreams -- that is the devil trying to tell them something?
If I have a dream with negative content and I begin to feel fearful, would I conclude that is the devil trying to scare me? Or can the devil even give dreams?

I know for a fact, those visions we had when the person gave us those false words of knowledge were from the devil. I am not sure about devil dreams....
How would I know if a dream is from the devil?
The devil might be trying to scare me, or God might be trying to warn me.
If God is warning me, WHY? Because I can pray and see the trouble averted?
