Former Presidents Carter & Clinton Call for 'A New Baptist Covenant'


Former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have proposed the establishment of a broadly inclusive alternative Baptist movement to counter what they called a negative image of Baptists and to address poverty, the environment, and global conflicts, Baptist Press reports. Carter and Clinton kicked off their plans with a news conference Jan. 9 at the Carter Center in Atlanta, flanked by leaders of moderate Baptist groups including the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a breakaway group of an unverified number of churches that objected to the election of conservative leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention. Carter and Clinton announced a “Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant,” tentatively set for Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2008, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, which they hope will attract 20,000 Baptists. “This is a historic event for the Baptists in this country and perhaps for Christianity,” Carter said. “This is an attempt to bring people together and say, ‘What would our Christian witness require of us in the 21st century?’” Clinton said, adding that his goal is to be a “cheerleader” for the group. Leaders from the Southern Baptist Convention were not invited to attend.

Lord God, save President Clinton and may Jimmy Carter really live out the faith he claims to have. Lord, I pray they will both hold to a Biblical basis of things....not move off into this liberal group. I pray they will want to uphold the truth of scripture, not compromise just to include the liberals. Father, Clinton is trying to mix faith and ideas that our opposite of Your Word....because he wants to say you can be a Christian and still be for abortion and other sins. Father, bring revival to our nation. Bring revival to Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. I pray for them to be REAL Christians. I pray for them to uphold scripture. Lord, intervene in this nation so that YOUR WILL is done. I pray Baptists will not sell out and go for this anti-Bible stand on many issues, while on the surface, they are covering it with social issues of concern. I pray the Baptist that are against abortion, homosexuality and so on will feed the poor, etc., so that they will not be accused of missing this part of the Gospel. We need miracles here, in this situation.

I speak SOLD OUT TO JESUS CHRIST to Jimmy Carter.

Remove the blindness covering their eyes! Let them know it's wrong to put light and darkness together and lump both under the term "faith." We pray for an END to this idea. We pray Your Spirit will apprehend and anoint Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Make them strong witnesses for Jesus Christ and His truth. Let them stand agaisnt sin and stand for what's right (as in feeding the poor). Lord, I pray and ask, in Jesus Name, amen.

Jeri-rose, I don't seem to be able to find an anti-Bible base in any of the articles I have read on this subject.


Perhaps you would elucidate?
