Herrod, Herrod jr.?

Here's a different question for the masses. Joseph is told by an angel to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt because of Herrods plan to kill all of the male children under 2 years old. Then after Herrods death, Joseph brings Mary and Jesus back. Now here's the question...Is the Herrod that Jesus is sent to by Pilot (before His cucifixion) a decendant of the original Herrod? This question was posed to me by a child in my class at church. Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!! and GOD BLESS!!!

Herod I or Herod the Great, was a Roman client-king of Judaea (c. 74 BC – c. 4 in Jerusalem). He married TEN times until an excruciating kidney disease removed him from this world.

A few marriages and children
1. 1st marriage to Doris
• Son Antipater, executed 4 BC 2. Second marriage to Mariamne I, daughter of Hasmonean Alexandros- Children:
• Son Alexandros, executed 7 BC
• Son Aristobulos, executed 7 BC
• Daughter Salampsio
• Daughter Cypros
3. Third marriage - to Mariamne II, daughter of High-Priest Simon
• Son Herod

4. Fourth marriage to – Malthace with whom he had
Son Herodes Archelaos- Ethnarch ( also known as Archelaus)
• Son Herodes Antipas - Tetrarch
• Daughter Olympias

Now about Herod the Great's son Herod Archelaus

The availalble historical accounts show that Herod the Great was nearly 70 years old by the time he died in 4 BC. Being 70 and then dead for 3 years prior to 1 BC, Herod the Great wouldn't have cared beans about some future king as a baby. So no, it's not Herod the Great Matthew was talking about in Matthew 2

Herod the Great did though have 3 sons that were made joint kings of the region. These were:

a. Herod Archelaus: ruled Judaea, Samaria, and Idumea (Matthew 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem)

b. Herod Antipas: ruled Galilee and Perea (and later had John the Baptist beheaded and it is to this Herod that Pontius Pilate sent Jesus for judgment.

c. Herod Phillip: ruled lands east of Jordan

Herod Archelaus ruled from 4 BC to 6 AD, he had direct control over Bethlehem at the time of Jesus's birth, and he is the one
mentioned a few verses down in Matthew 2.1-19.

Matthew 2:19-20 But when Herod (Archelaus) was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

Mat 2:22- But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there: nevertheless, being commanded by God in a dream, he returned into the parts of Galilee.

Herod Archelaus was 18 years old in 4 BC, and was the king of Judaea, Sumaria, and Idumea at the time that the order went out to kill the newborns in Bethlehem. He was described as being cruel and tyrannical and there is little doubt that he would have been the one to give the order to kill all newborns in Bethlehem.

I hope this answers your question.
