tucking in the troops

I Googled the title today and found this site. What a blessing today has been. My wife Lisa and I have been praying to find a way to hold the hand of our soldiers. My wife's nephew is back from Iraq, wounded, Purple Heart, and won't be going back. Another nephew is there now in the worst of the fighting. He has been there four months and wounded twice. Our youngest daughter will go soon!

Three weeks ago we decided to do something good for our troops. Send them a pillow and a blanket to let them know we care, that we would like to...tuck them in at night. Iraq is getting colder with the nights being very cold starting in January. We thought at first that we would do this for the 3637th National Guard Unit from our hometown, Springfield, Illinois. Our local veterans groups seem to want it to be bigger.

This morning we visited Farmingdale Elementary School. The 1-4th graders had spent the week studying and doing projects about Veterans...they had also conducted several dollar days to raise money for the "tucking in the troops" pillow and blanket. They raised $400.00. But you should have heard them talk. They don't know war expect up close...their mom's, dad's, brother's and sister's who are serving is what they know. One little girl bing interviewed by the TV reporter said when asked why she cared, "because sometimes all you get is a letter saying your dad isn't coming home". It was hard to keep composed.

What the local community is doing to support
"tuckinginthetroops.com" is unbelievable. Newspapers, radio, TV, businesses, money jars and civic events, parades, free advertising. We've been asked if we could do the same for other troops...I guess we're beening lead to say yes we will.

I write this note as I read a message from Jerry on this site about his dream...it was our dream too! Thank you for being part of our dream. Maybe the hand of God touched us both while we dreamed about our hero's!

OK... normally I do not allow off site web links but I think I am going to leave this one and go ask Pastor Jerry for permission to leave it in also.

I knit and crochet wool helmet liners for troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea and Kosovo and have been thinking of asking if I could place that web link on too... guess this is the push I needed. I take them to church and have them prayed over before I send them to the organization.

Father, wrap your arms around the men and women at war. Bless them and be good to them, bring them home safe and well, guide their steps and help them to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Protect them and keep them warm. Thank You Lord Jesus! AMEN

Our prayers continue to be answered! As of today we have passed the half way point raising enough to send 100 soldiers in Iraq a pillow and a blanket. 50 are on there way now. More fundraisers are being held in December to give the program another big boost. But almost every day someone makes a donation. Over the next three weeks we plan on visiting local churches to ask for donations.

www.Tuckinginthetroops.com has been getting some hits and the message seems to be getting out. If someone wants to carry the banner in their community for their soldiers we will be glad to share what we have learned.

Oh...speaking of banners. We are walking in the Springfield, Illinois Christmas Parade this Saturday with the TuckingintheTroops.com banner. Projected weather is 32 and possible sleet. Burr!!!
