What do I have to do to be able to speak in tongues ?

I also want to speak in tongues but I just can't do it, even though I asked for it. Isn't this for everybody ?

Posted by: Ragamuffin

In 1 Corinithians 12, it speaks of spiritual gifts and it says in verse 11 "but one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills." So I would answer, yes, this gift is for you, and you'll receive it if and when God chooses to give it to you. I don't think we can presume that because we ask, we should receive right then and there, in anything. All things are in God's timing and God's will. I will leave the rest for someone else to fill in...

God has ALREADY given you this gift of the Holy Spirit, you only have to ask God to fill you fully with His Spirit and then open your mouth and let the 'living waters' come forth! Trust God to fill your mouth with His beautiful prayer language! It may only be a few syllables at first or it may pour forth in abundance! Put aside all fear and doubt and unbelief. It is yours for the taking, just open the gift!

Mark 16:17 "These signs that follow those who believe.....they shall speak with new tongues....."

Frederik, I have only spoken in tongues once while in deep prayer last summer and I have been a Christian for almost 20 years. While many people place importance on speaking in tongues it is also mentioned that tongues is the least of the gifts and that we should desire the best gifts. Paul mentions that while he wished all could speak in tongues not all will, that God give out the gifts of the Spirit as He sees need for them among His children. It is good to ask for the gift, and if God sees fit to bestow it upon you He will, just make sure you are asking for it to glorify God. I am sure you are wanting to experience all God has for you in this life so I imagine that at some point when you least expect it God will bless you with this gift just to let you know He is there

These signs shall follow those WHO BELIEVE......

they shall SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES!

Mark 16:17

Forget what you've been taught against tongues.
Forget what people tell you against tongues.
Any words against it are from the devil.
Only the Word of God is truth.

Everyone in the Bible obeyed God and received the baptism of fire AFTER THEY WERE SAVED and how did others know they had received this? They SPOKE WITH NEW TONGUES!

Tongues are the LIVING WATERS from your belly, your innermost being. Praying in tongues is powerful and effective because it's from God through you back to God, praying for what you don't even know about, when we don't know how to pray as we ought. We pray IN THE SPIRIT [in tongues] and we pray with understanding. We sing IN THE SPIRIT [in tongues] and with understanding.

The "gift" of tongues that Paul refers to is one specific purpose of tongues, used in the church meeting to give a word to the congregation to encourage, edify and build up the body. Yes, that is a gift that not all have. I don't have it but I pray one day I will be able to have that. When words of tongues are given in church, someone must interpret so all understand what God has said to them.

But the Bible is clear that ALL BELIEVERS should receive the baptism of fire with the evidence of speaking in tongues. This is the believer's prayer language. It edifies, encourages, strengthens and fills us. Don't grieve the Holy Spirit by refusing to let Him has His way in you! Praying in tongues is so wonderful, so glorious, so precious, I don't know how I lived without it. Thank You JESUS!

But all the christians which I know can speak in tongues, that makes me feel bad.
I also haven't any other gift of the spirit, I have nothing.
I cannot heal nor can I recieve prophecies.
Maybe that's all because I haven't been baptized again. And I do NOT already have it othwerwise I could speak in tongues.

Frederik:

Seek first the kingdom of God and ALL THESE THINGS shall be added to you! Don't feel bad! Feel HUNGRY for more of God! We don't heal anyone, only Jesus does that. But you need lots of His power IN YOU to do that. Ask DAILY to be filled to overflowing with His power! It's like a glass being filled with water. If the flow continues, it will OVER FLOW. I got the baptism of fire at one of Jerry's meetings. At first it was only a few words which sounded like mumblings to me, but within a few hours it was POURING out of me, so fast I had to slow it down. But I prayed in tongues all day for days after that and to this day I pray and sing throughout the day in tongues. It's like anything else, the more you use it the stronger and more powerful it gets. If you ignore it, it will shrivel and die. As Jesus said, "To him who has MORE shall be given but to him who has nothing [who ignores what he has] even that shall be taken away."

The only way to prophesy is the know His voice and the only way to hear His voice is to know His voice and that comes through the Word of God. As you read His Word, ask Him to teach you, to open the eyes of your understanding. Eventually you'll know His voice as He speaks to you. Be faithful in the little things and He'll give you bigger things! Be patient with yourself. We are all growing in Christ. First and foremost is to love Jesus and know Him -- the rest will follow!

Hey Fred, I've waited years for my baptism of the Holy Ghost, years. Others have too. If you have been already baptized, that's good enough. Some people get baptized in the Holy Ghost before they get baptized in water. So put away those doubts, call things that are not, as though they are. Don't give up man.

It's not a one time thing though. You need to be filled every day! We leak!!

Good thing it didn't take YEARS for the apostles to be baptized in fire, eh? It would've taken longer to turn the world upside down!

You gotta get plugged IN. Get dah POWER!!! Get enough power of God in you so you GLOW IN THE DARK [like Jesus!]. We should be pillars of FIRE!!!

Ever notice the people who say "I can't do it", can't do it?

Just do it! The Spirit of God is already in you waiting for you to yield to him, so He can fill you (on a minute by minute basis) Most of the time it's the simple problem of not yielding your vocal chords to the Holy Spirit, that's all.

This is not a hard thing. As you have received Christ Jesus, so walk in Him. This means you have to do this by faith, just like you got saved by faith.

Start praising the Lord (somewhere in private) that you have already received the full ministry of the Holy Spirit in your life. Thank God that you have already been filled with power from on High. Keep doing this and make the decision to receive by faith with much praise and thanksgiving. Once you do this you'll find the prayer language is easy because it's already in your praise, worship and thanksgiving.

It's just happens to be a language that isn't of this world.
Praying in the Spirit in your prayer closet builds up your faith and keeps you in Love (see Jude).

Once you've done it in private, you'll be more comfortable doing it in public meetings.

About 6 years ago I used to attend a catholic church. I rarely read the bible or prayed. My neighbours, baptist lay preacher and his wife, invited me to an alpha course they were running in their home. [for more info on alpha courses any budding evangelists check out Holy Trinity Brompton u.k. website]
Iwent to their course out of pity for them, there wouldn't be many people there and I wanted to support them.
The power that was there was incredible, I wasn't sure what it was. In the privacy of my own home I begged Jesus to come into my life. One week they were covering speaking in tongues. Not having read Acts I had no idea what they were on about. All of a sudden these words poured out of my mouth, and it wasn't the queens english! A chap from their church opposite started to translate what I was saying and spoke back to me in tongues. It was awesome!
I didnt speak in tongues for 2 years after that until I went to another church and one of the church leaders had a word for me about how I should speak in tongues more. After such an amazing experience you would expect that I would be keen to but I wasn't - what if I couldn't?
I just had to open my mouth and start speaking anything before the river started to flow. It requires faith I think.
Bless you

I have faith but I know exactly that I don't have the ability to speak in tongues. Even if I try to say something then I know exactly that it's just nonsense which I make up in my head.
You simply know when you have it and I don't have it.
It doesn't help me when I try it cause I just can't do it.
I don't know I've wanted to do this for so long and it didn't happen, somehow I cannot imagine that it'll ever happen. If I could really speak in tongues, then this would be such a great happening, it would be as if the universe splits up.

You know what ? This doesn't help me.
Of course I can say "yes I can do it" but what does this change ?
I cheat myself. I know that I can't do it, okay ?
I told you that it doesn't work when I try it.

Here's an exact example that will help you, if you will think about it . . .

There are people who don't get born-again because they say "I can't get saved. It just doesn't work for me". Guess what. They don't get saved because they've made up their minds that they can't, for whatever reason. They just don't allow themselves to receive.

Now, either one of two things are happening here.

Either God is now a respecter of persons (because He freely gave this to others, but now He's withholding it from you) making Him a liar . . . . or the problem is you have decided (as an act of your own free will) that you can't receive this from the Lord.

The fact of the matter is that God is not a liar, so the problem is with you. Frankly, your attitude about this stinks!

You're acting like a little child that is pouting because they think they can't do something, so they say "I just can't do this".

You need to go to God's Word and find out what He said about it and live with those scriptures for as long as it takes for faith to grow up inside of you to receive. Jesus said that the entire kingdom of God works as if a man had seed and cast it into the ground, so start planting the Word on this subject into your Spirit, and then cast down all mental thoughts and imaginations that are contrary to God's Word on this.

As a born-again Christian, this is part of your inheritance! It's yours, now, just like Salvation is! But you have to choose to receive.

God IS NOT holding back . . . YOU are!

Frederik - how come it isn't enough to know that you will receive this gift when God is good and ready to give it to you, not one second sooner and not one second later? I understand your desire, but you seem to overlook that God is always in control? It's going to happen, all the struggles you have, I know in my heart they are not for nothing, God will use you more and more, these gifts will come. I just wonder why that can't be enough?

Why do I always have to wait for things ?
Everybody besides me seems to receive things which I have to wait for.
And somehow I cannot imagine that I'll ever speak in tongues.
This isn't very beneficial for my faith. Imagine you try to pass a test many times and you fail every time, would you still believe that you'll make it one day ? I bet you wouldn't, and this is how I feel.
I find praying so hard and often I just don't know what to say, sometimes I wish I could pray but I am sick of trying to find words. I don't know you can make so many mistakes when praying and the newest thing is that Satan can also stop or slow down the angels which deliver the prayers. I mean there are 1000 things which can go wrong when you're praying. How am I supposed to have faith ? That's like playing in the lottery and having faith that you'll win.
I have prayed for so many things and nothing happened, how can I be faithful ? I will not gain back faith until God finally answers a prayer but he will not answer a prayer cause I'm not faithful enough, this is a vicious circle. This gets me down, I could cry all day.
When a prayer isn't answered then you don't even know why.
Did God say no or was I not faithful enough ? Did I sin before I prayed and did this affect the prayer ? Did Satan stop my prayer-delivery angel ? Man, this is simply too much for me. Where is the sense of praying for things without getting an answer or a feedback from God ?
I have heard from many christians that they'd stop praying if they no longer got an answer. I never get an answer. Maybe I make things wrong but I also have no chance to find out why my prayers aren't answered. I can't do anything against it.If you were in my position you'd also not be satisfied. I just don't understand why God makes everything so hard for me. Maybe my faith simply sucks and this is why I'll never receive anything.Maybe God wants me to pray for 100 days before he finally does something, but I really don't have the stamina for such things, cause if nothing happened after those 100 days I knew that it would be over with faith.

None of us has the ability to speak in tongues. It's all from God. Just seek Him, praise Him, hunger for Him and the rest will fall into place. Just ask for more of Him and believe me, you'll be overshadowed by His presence and you'll speaking in tongues. Out of your belly shall flow rivers of living waters! Seek Him FIRST.

In the New Covenant, angels do not deliver prayers to God for us, for we now have a direct relationship with the Father through Jesus.

So, this is not an issue.

God is not making things hard on you. You just lack knowledge in this area, therefore you have nothing for your faith to be based upon. Either that, or you don't believe the written Word of God.

The best thing to do from here is what the other brother said . . . seek your relationship with God first. Then just forget about all this for awhile. You're obviously not ready for this.

It's not God holding back, it's you not knowing how to receive. Maybe someday when you grow up more spiritually, you'll be ready.

Just leave this alone for now, so you don't go off the deep end over it.

It took me over a year and a half to be touched by God that way.
I read books. I listened to tapes. I prayed. I fasted. I did everything I knew and nothing, I mean nothing.

Then one day I was in church and a man looked at me and said you have been seeking the Holy Spirit. My heart leaped inside. He said step out in faith and come down here. I did and was filled instantly.

I do remember the frustration.
But the wait was worth it.

For over the years I have had friends who doubted their experience but because I waited so long no one can take it from me now.

Thank you for bringing this up of talking in tongues. I had heard of it but I have never seen or heard someone to the best of my knowledge speak this way. I too am willing to wait til the Lord will bestow upon me this language of God in prayer. Bless you for your courage to ask and seek this knowledge from others and I thank others for sharing their knowledge of God's word and their experiences. God Bless You all. In Christ name Jesus. I pray in tongues!!! I'm a brand new baby in Christ. The word of God says its a gift. [Act 2:38] I was alone a home when it fell. When you see Gods word for the first time you believe it literly word for word. So I got on my knee's and raised my arm's to God. I asked Him for my free gift and began to praise him over and over again. As tears fell I felt His presence. My lips began to tremble. Then I heard a voice say speak. I opened my mouth and spoke a sound from my throat that went into the most beautiful words I had ever heard. I knew in my spirit that it was of God, because the peace and love I felt was undiscribable. Tongues are a gift from God [ they are the Holy Spirit praying for you directly to God].God will not force anyone to take His gift. Do you have the faith? Just ask Him for it and start to thank Him, it will come.

At church the last couple of weeks our pastor has been talking about this topic whick is a little strange because a go to a medium sized quite Methodist church. Speaking in tongue was one of those topics that you never hear about and most definitely never see anyone do or talk about it.

Anywho...one of our pastors was saying that tongues is a free gift to anyone who asks God. All ya have to do is ask him for it and he will give it to ya. He said that it is a powerful tool to use while praying. He then went on to explain his own experience with it.

In a Methodist church!

Praise the Lord! Just goes to show you that God is on the move, even into traditional churches that normally don't get into full gospel things like this.

Glad to hear it, brother! I'm telling you, the devil is in BIG TIME trouble! he's under our feet! death is under our feet! We've been given absolute dominion!

Posted by: buddy

Wow, First time I ever heard of a Methodist church let alone a Babtist church even discuss things of this nature.

Shows you just how wonderful he is

Here's a nugget for you.

Spirit
Soul
Body

You are a spirit that pocesses a soul that dwells in a body.
Is the body ruler of the spirit? If so, then the gifts will never come.
Let the spirit take control of your body. Let go of your earthly ways.

You will then see a change.

For I was one of the worst sinners there was. But the holy ghost has shown me many things.

Im Baptist and I have experienced speaking in tongues. We may not dance in the isles, but when it comes to the power of the Holy Spirit we believe.

I believe that change is coming. I guess the bishops are looking at this and realizing that their churches are missing something. That if it was something important enough for Jesus to ask the believers to wait for then it is important for the churches to have it also. Things are starting to change, it just depends on whether or not the people listen to the Holy Spirit and follow it.

Posted by: Rockrz

You know, it's about time that churches start reading and believing God's Word instead of man's tradition, and carnal religious ideas about what God's Word says. (BIG difference between the two)

When you choose to go by what God says, it's amazing what will happen! God is bound by His Word (because it's impossible for Him to lie) and He takes great joy when His children start believing what He's said in His Word.

It's a shame that we have to teach Christians to believe what their Father says, but that's what needs to be done. More & more folks are getting there everyday, thank God!

Frederick.

I know nothing at all about speaking in tongues. I will admit it! Ive heard of it but its nothing Ive ever experienced, heard or discussed in church.

But thats not what I wanted to respond to you about. What I wanted to talk to you about was your other post... The tantrum about unanswered prayer.

I say this in love from one believer to another.. What you had, was a tantrum. I can understand and even relate! I think we all can. We have ALL had times when our prayer isnt answered. Some people pray their whole lives for something and it doesnt even come about till after they have passed on.

We are called to endure and be patient and wait on the Lord for Him to do in HIS timing. Who are you (or me or any of us) to tell God when to do anything? His timing is not your timing, His ways not your ways.

This will be hard to hear but it needs to be said. Sometimes, God says NO! There are times we want something and the answer is simply No. God knows whats best for you. If you pray for a specific Job, He may say no because He has one better lined up for you. If you Pray for an event to happen, He may say NO because something may have happened that caused you pain as a result of said event. If you pray to speak in tongues.. perhaps your not asking for the right reasons. I dont know, thats between You and God.

Shaking your fists and giving God Ultimatums will not get your prayers answered. 100 days or 100 years. He will give answer in His time.

Faith is faith not because its easy and we all get what we want. its Faith because we can hold up against pressure and disappointments and pain by relying on Him who lives within us.

*big hugs* I pray Jesus give you peace and understanding.

What does it sound like to speak in tongues? It's a little hard to explain, but i'll try. It's as easy as speaking english ,but it's another other then english. My tongues is like an arib tongue. I don't understand it but, I can asure you it's real. I have picked out words in news casts overseas spoken in there native tongue that have been confermation to my spirit that my prayers in tongues are real.

Pray for the Baptist churches up here, speaking in tongues is strictly forbidden.
