| | EMERGENCY PRAYER REQUEST!! Open letter to President Bush. Please read this & add your name to the list. The "f" on TV is not ok. | | Dear President Bush: We, the undersigned, want to thank you for taking the time to read our letter. We have great delight in our hearts about having a President such as yourself in the White House today. None of us really understands the pressures that must come with the job. You do not represent just a few, but all the people of this great nation. We do not mean to be a bother, but something has come to our attention that has motivated us to write to you.
Our concern arose as a result of the annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony held in January 2003, during which time singer Bono, of the band U2, said "this is really, really, f***** brilliant". Bono's statement was aired, intact, by various television stations, prompting about 200 complaints to the FCC that those TV stations had violated the FCC's restrictions on obscene broadcasts by carrying that portion of the awards ceremony.
As I am sure you know that David Solomon, chief of the FCC's enforcement bureau, said in the ruling that "Bono used the vulgarity as an adjective or to emphasize an exclamation and that "the use of specific words, including expletives or other 'four-letter words' does not render material obscene."
Here is our concern. : Up until now, all the movies put on prime time had to be edited. As a matter of fact, many of us waited for the movies to come on TV so we could watch them without being offended. Now, we feel this ruling will give the movie makers the idea they do not have to be edited for cursing. Even as they do not take out the words when they "Damn G**", they do not have to take out, and I quote, "vulgarity as an adjective or to emphasize an exclamation"
That, Mr. President, is the definition or purpose of all cursing. Why is this a problem now? When we watch a movie or program on TV, if the artist wants to use any of the four letter words for art, we feel the TV stations will say it will be OK. We will never know what they are going to say. We do not want to teach our children or grandchildren that it is OK to curse just because we feel like it. We lost cursing God on TV. We do not want to lose this one.
Chairman Powell has emphasized on numerous occasions his strong commitment to enforcement as a central part of his vision for a more effective FCC . This should not be just about money but about protection of children and the people. As president, you are well aware of the real purpose of public office. "To protect and to serve". Please, Mr. President, this is within your power and your ability to do something. You do not need a vote from the Senate. You only have to act. This may not even come up as a problem while you are in office, but as you know, "give them an inch and they will take a mile."
We want to thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and we place the burden in your hands. Whatever you decide, we thank you for
We the people Jerry Gaffney and all the rest of the names and address I have provided here. |
