A Hush Over Hollywood

Picture this:

Somewhere in the world, a filmmaker creates a short documentary that chronicles what he perceives as the excesses of anti-abortion activists. An anti-abortion zealot reacts to the film by killing the filmmaker in broad daylight and stabbing anti-abortion tracts onto his body. How does the Hollywood community react to this atrocity? Would there be angry protests? Candlelight vigils? Outraged letters and columns and articles? Awards named in honor of their fallen comrade? Demands for justice? Calls for protection of artistic freedom? It’s a pretty safe bet that there would be all of the above and much more. And all of the anger would be absolutely justified.

So I’m trying to understand the nearly universal lack of outrage coming from Hollywood over the brutal murder of Dutch director, Theo van Gogh, who was shot on the morning of November 2, while bicycling through the streets of Amsterdam. The killer then stabbed his chest with one knife and slit his throat with another.

The presumed murderer, a Dutch-born dual Moroccan-Dutch citizen, attached a 5-page note to van Gogh's body with a knife. In it, he threatened jihad against the West in general, and specifically against five prominent Dutch political figures. Van Gogh’s crime? He created a short film highly critical of the treatment of women in Islamic societies. So, again I ask, where is the outrage from Hollywood’s creative community? I mean, talk about a violation of the right of free speech!

Perhaps they are afraid that their protests would put them in danger. That, at least, is a defensible position. If I were Michael Moore, I would much rather rail against George W. Bush, who is much less likely to have me killed, than van Gogh’s murderer and the threat to creative freedom he brings. Besides, a man of Moore’s size would provide a great deal of “bulletin board” space.

Maybe they think it would be intolerant of them to criticize the murder, because it would put them on the side of someone who criticized a segment of the Arab world. And, after all, we are often reminded that we need to be more tolerant of others, especially if they’re not Christians or Jews.

There’s another possibility; one that seems crazy on the surface, but does provide an explanation for the silence, and is also in keeping with the political climate in Hollywood. Is it just possible that there are those who are reluctant to criticize an act of terror because that might somehow align them with President Bush, who stubbornly clings to the notion that these are evil people who need to be defeated? Could the level of hatred for this President be so great that some people are against anything he is for, and for anything he is against?

As nutty as it sounds, how else can you explain such a muted reaction to an act that so directly impacts creative people everywhere? Can you conceive of a filmmaker being assassinated because of any other subject matter without seeing a resulting explosion of reaction from his fellow artists in America and around the world?

As I said, it’s a nutty-sounding explanation, but we live in nutty times.

God wake us up to have a conscience. Wake us up to have a voice. Wake us up to act on our freedom of speech, and as Christians take a stand. Jesus, wake this world up to YOU!

Father, I have no idea how to pray for Hollywood in this! Comfort the Family of the man murdered and bring his killer to justice, repentance and Salvation! Holy Spirit, reach out to Theo Van Gogh's Family and loved one to bring them to Jesus for Salvation and Comfort. Bring the man who killed him to repentance and keep him in custody so he will not hurt or kill again in the name of his jihad. Bring him to Jesus and Salvation and pull him out of the grip of hell. In the Name of Jesus! AMEN!

They might have yelled if it had been someone who had made a movie about animal rights or protecting the envirornent. But I thought Hollywood cared about "woman's rights" (as in, why are they so in favor of her right to an abrotion, anyway?)

Lord, we pray for a change in Hollywood. Start revival there. Many have been saved, but few compared to those who aren't. Let the Bible studies and prayer groups catch on. Let people in the movie business be saved! In Jesus Name, amen.

Father, I pray for America to have a Godly president. Proverbs 29:2 says the people rejoice when the righteous thrive. According to Proverbs 6: 16 & 17, you hate those who shed innocent blood (those who are pro-abortion). So, Lord, we pray that a RIGHTEOUS person may be our President. Whatever it takes! We really need to pray about this. He was Shot by muslims in daylight on a public street to terrorize the public. He then was stabbed and a note was pinned on his chest. This was done because he protested the bad treatment of women by muslims. This was in Holland not Iraq.

The murder of Dutch movie director Theo van Gogh comes two months after his highly controversial film, Submission - about the abuse of Muslim women - was shown on national TV in Holland.

Death
Van Gogh was murdered in the early morning of Tuesday November 2, 2004, in Amsterdam in front of the Amsterdam East borough office (stadsdeelkantoor) on the corner of the Linnaeusstraat and Tweede Oosterparkstraat streets. He was shot with eight bullets, that came from a HS2000 (a handgun produced in 2000 in Croatia) and died on the spot. His throat was slit, and he was then stabbed in the chest. Two knives were left inplanted in his torso, one pinning a 5 page note to his body. The note threatened Western governments, Jews and Hirsi Ali (who went into hiding). The note also contains references to the ideologies of the Egyptian organization Takfir wal-Hijra.

What Dutch filmmaker and columnist Theo Van Gogh saw as the shabby treatment of females throughout the Muslim community led him to produce documentaries that portrayed Muslim men as tormentors of women, especially their wives. One recent scathingly critical Van Gogh film carried the message that Islam promotes violence against women. Last week, Van Gogh, a grandnephew of the painter, was shot as he cycled to work. He managed to get up and stagger across the street to his building where he collapsed. The assailant followed him and slit his throat before pinning to his chest with a knife a five-page manifesto that called on Muslims to rise against the "infidel enemies" in the West.

The alleged killer Mohammed Bouyeri, a 26-year-old man of Dutch and Moroccan nationalities, was apprehended by the police after being shot in the leg. Although born in Amsterdam, well-educated and apparently well-integrated, Bouyeri became a Muslim extremist and has alleged terrorist ties. In the Dutch media the suspect is called Mohammed B., since it is common practice in The Netherlands to abbreviate the surnames of crime suspects (or even convicts) in order to protect their privacy. He is also charged with attempted murder of a police officer and bystander, illegal possession of a firearm, and conspiring to murder others, including Hirsi Ali.

Until his death Van Gogh was working on a movie (0605) about the assassination of Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn. The film is set for premiere on December 15, 2004 on the internet through a Dutch ISP, which also financed the movie.

Van Gogh was cremated on November 9, 2004 in Amsterdam.

Aftermath
The day after the murder Dutch police arrested eight Islamic radicals. Six detainees are of Moroccan origin, one is Algerian and one has dual Spanish-Moroccan nationality. By November 11, 18 religious sites (mainly Muslim, with some Christian) had been vandalized or subjected to arson.

Theo van Gogh's name was better-known around the world because he shared it with his great-great-grandfather, the brother of artist Vincent van Gogh.

But in the Dutch film community, he was a well-known figure and has been described as the Netherlands' Michael Moore.

Submission may have only been a 10-minute English-language short, but it caused uproar in his home country when it was broadcast at the end of August.

The outcry centred on the stories of four Muslim women who were beaten, raped and forced into marriage, and were asking for Allah's help.

Theo stabbed and shot dead in a street in Amsterdam. Van Gogh spent 18,000 euros (£12,500) of his own money making the film in secret - and it was to be the first instalment of a three-part series.

Muslim commentators in the country accused Van Gogh and Hirsi Ali - who both got death threats - of courting controversy and said the movie was confrontational and blasphemous.

The fall-out has also included heated media debate, denouncement in internet chat rooms and a rap song calling for Hirsi Ali's death.

In downtown Oslo Norway we had a demonstration this past summer in the downtown area. There was a bombed out bus that a terrroist had climbed aboard killing many. To actually see the condition of the bus and the pictures of the faces of all those who had died in this mass slaughter brought such emotion to me I was not prepared for. To see it on TV and read and hear about, is moving, but then to see the aftermath of the actual bus and the faces of a children and elderly and all the men and women filled me with such indignation and sorrow I will never forget! Right there at the sight was also a peaceful counter demonstration of Palastinians handing out material concerning their perceived injustices. I was mighty nervous to see Israelis and Palastinians both demonstrating and speaking out in that square so close together. People on the streets were being interviewed by a local TV news team. How precious is the voice of freedom! How precious is the God given human right to worship God according to our own dictates and conscious! How great is the need to open the mind of those who oppress the weak of this world! Oh how we need to put our shoulders together and never give into the fear the evil one tries to intimidate us with! There are so many that are blinded, they cannot see the sun shining at noon day! I stand with Jerry and others this day in prayer over this murder that was commited is such a cowardly fashion.

Oh dear Father in Heaven, we ask that the darkness and gross wickedness of the minds of men be touched by the power of thy hand. Lead us Father in the things we should do to stand against these terrible forces. Oh give us the victory. In Jesus Name Amen.

I saw something on TV I will never forget. In a stadium, in the middle of the grassy field, I saw a woman kneeling. She had a black blanket over her head (tradition & law, I think, in at least some Middle Eastern places). Standing over her was a man with a gun in a camoflage (sp.) uniform. (He was hiding his face, so he is afraid someone will recognize him.) Anyway, the narrator was explaining how this woman had shown a part of her bare skin in public. Then I saw this 'hidden face' with a gun on the field shoot her in the head and kill her. The narrator said her husband arranged it, I believe.

If all these atrocities are done in the name of allah, then he must be our adversary. The opposite of Love is anti-Christ.

How do you demonstrate Love to a people who have never met Him? If they want to kill you when they see you, how are you going to get them to behave long enough to hear? What if they act like pit bulls who have been mis-treated all of their lives!

The answer I think is this: You can't. God is the only One who can.

So, what do we do? Ignore them and let them kill each other off in their own country? What do the people in their country do after they have come to know the only true God of the world? How do they protect their own babies? Or, their grandparents? From the "hiding" men in their own neighborhoods?

We simply cannot compromise with evil. There can be no agreements, no contracts, no "peace" treaties. Evil wants to hurt others.

I have heard that the painter Van Gogh was a prophet of God. I wonder if this man was, too. Anyway, God is faithful to His own. There is no place for a killer to hide from Him. Even if the killer wanted to hide under his mother's skirt, God would know where he stood.

I pray that all killers will repent and turn themselves in, in the Name of Jesus Christ. Since Love has the power to lay life down, after true repentance, Love has the power to raise it up again. I do believe in capital punishment, as long as the punishment fits the crime....an eye for an eye, etc. God is not wishy-washy on this issue. There is a difference between slapping a cheek and killing a child.

Genesis 9:6 "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." If a man (terrorist) gets killed by another man who has been trained to kill (like our Marines)....isn't our God the One in control? No one can be killed without our God's permission.

This could be one of those generational curse things.....

I also remember that God would not let David build a temple for Him because David was too bloody. So, the answer has to be obedience to our God, in the long run. Also, God will have mercy on whom He will have mercy.

If we, by the authority God gives to us through the sacrifice made by His Son, Jesus Christ - the Messiah - break off generational curses and begin to move in obedience to the Word of God.....No weapon formed against us can prosper......

His Word says: "Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the water to destroy. No weapon tht is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD."

So, the full power of God dwells inside of His people who move in obedience to His Word. That is how they will survive the "terrorists" in every country. By His power and His mercy and His favor. If we are all obedient, all the terrorist can do is just stand there until he is cast into the pits of hell.

"THUS saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil."

Oh well, and you know, Isaiah 56 is just good all over. It should be red, I mean "read."

Heavenly Father, we ask you to enter this situation, those who did the deed we ask be brought to justice, those who have not risen up to stand for truth, we ask that you will give them to do the right thing. Lord for those who keep their faces covered while they do these deeds, Lord, we ask that they will be recognized and arrested if they are still free. Father, we ask that your love will touch all the people involved, and especially those who stand for righteousness.

Shocking. Sad. Sickening. Amazing. Where were the reporters? Where were the cameras rolling? Only when a U.S. servicemember looks cross-eyed at a Muslim terrorist, there are 50 cameras right there and 100 reporters to make sure it's on every news station in the world. This didn't make the big headlines because it doesn't serve the liberal media agenda. It's only newsworthy when it shows the U.S. in a bad light

Dear God,
Please help bring these thugs to justice. Please help the free world to WAKE UP and smell the coffee. We are not safe anywhere from terrorism. They change the rules often, so indifference and apathy will not protect the countries who choose to hide their heads in the sand. Please help join the free countries of the world to eradicate terrorism. Please protect our troops.

Theo van Gogh was a familiar face here in Apeldoorn doing research for his film, just before he was murdered in cold blood.

I know that this country i live in is maybe one of, if not the most spiritually abusive country in Europe.
There are many many nationalities living here, especially in Amsterdam, the heart of the drug scene in Holland. The red light district where young girls sell their bodies to feed their addiction. So many faces, so blank and lost.
Hearts screaming out for freedom, although freedom from what...they dont know.
Radical Islamics, burning for their beliefs, people who walk the streets day or night, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, even Apeldoorn. Nowhere is safe. The Islamic movement has spread and hass taken root all over the world, yes even in tiny little Holland....Holland that thought because of its smallness and its "modern" approach to life, tht it would not come under the judgment of God.
There have been many prophesies over this country. Warnings....

Oh Lord...wake us up !! Show us how low we have sunk and how we have blatantly turned our heads and refused to listen to You.
Have mercy upon this little country, shake us and bring us face to face with Your truth.
Lord protect the thousands upon thousands in Holland, who live in defiance of Your Word. Protect them against themselves, against their unknowingly following the father of lies, the father of destruction.
They are Your children. They are still Your children.

You have spoken to us so many times, prepare us....raise up Your army Lord.
Pray and confront. Pray and confront. Show Holland how to pray again. Empower our spiritual leaders with the burning fire of Your Spirit to set alight the flame in the churches, so that it spills out on to the streets....overcoming, overcoming satan. In the mighty name of Jesus.
Set Your seal upon Your servants and bring boldness and determination. Let the children know You, the next generation.
Use Hollands youth Lord ! Build them up and equip them. Give them the courage to stand up for Your Word.
Use us Father.
