Christian, Abdul Rahman, faces death penalty for leaving Islam, please pray for him.

Abdul Rahman converted from Islam to Christianity and may be executed for it.

Abdul Rahman, 41, is facing a possible death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity may be mentally unfit to stand trial, a state prosecutor said Wednesday.

Abdul Rahman has been charged with rejecting Islam, a crime under this country's Islamic laws. His trial started last week and he confessed to becoming a Christian 16 years ago. If convicted, he could be executed.

But prosecutor Sarinwal Zamari said questions have been raised about his mental fitness.

"We think he could be mad. He is not a normal person. He doesn't talk like a normal person," he told The Associated Press.

Moayuddin Baluch, a religious adviser to President Hamid Karzai, said Rahman would undergo a psychological examination.

"Doctors must examine him," he said. "If he is mentally unfit, definitely Islam has no claim to punish him. He must be forgiven. The case must be dropped."

It was not immediately clear when he would be examined or when the trial would resume. Authorities have barred attempts by the AP to see Rahman and he is not believed to have a lawyer.

A Western diplomat in Kabul and a human rights advocate - both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter - said the government was desperately searching for a way to drop the case because of the reaction it has caused.

The United States, Britain and other countries that have troops in Afghanistan have voiced concern about Rahman's fate.

The Bush administration Tuesday issued a subdued appeal to Kabul to let Rahman practice his faith in safety. German Roman Catholic Cardinal Karl Lehmann said the trial sent an "alarming signal" about freedom of worship in Afghanistan.

The case is believed to be the first of its kind in Afghanistan and highlights a struggle between religious conservatives and reformists over what shape Islam should take there four years after the ouster of the fundamentalist Taliban regime.

Afghanistan's constitution is based on Shariah law, which is interpreted by many Muslims to require that any Muslim who rejects Islam be sentenced to death. The state-sponsored Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission has called for Rahman to be punished, arguing he clearly violated Islamic law.

The case has received widespread attention in Afghanistan where many people are demanding Rahman be severely punished.

"For 30 years, we have fought religious wars in this country and there is no way we are going to allow an Afghan to insult us by becoming Christian," said Mohammed Jan, 38, who lives opposite Rahman's father, Abdul Manan, in Kabul. "This has brought so much shame."

Rahman is believed to have converted from Islam to Christianity while working as a medical aid worker for an international Christian group helping Afghan refugees in the Pakistani city of Peshawar.

He then moved to Germany for nine years before returning to Kabul in 2002, after the ouster of the hard-line Taliban regime.

Police arrested him last month after discovering him in possession of a Bible during questioning over a dispute for custody of his two daughters. Prosecutors have offered to drop the charges if Rahman converts back to Islam, but he has refused.

32And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, 33who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. 35Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. 36Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. 37They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. (Hebrews 11:32 - 37)

Lord, this could go either way. Whatever the outcome, I pray that Your Name is glorified. I pray that You are lifted up in this that You may draw all men onto You. Father God, I thank You that Abdul is obeying God rather than man. Let this be a mighty witness to those who persecute him. I pray for the salvation of the Muslims who are accusing him. Let them see the strong convictions of Abdul and know that Abdul believes in the real God, as opposed to Allah. I ask that Your love and forgiveness may flow through Abdul, and let that be a witness to those who want him diagnosed as mad or want him sentenced to death. I pray for the salvation of many through this situation. What the devil meant for evil, turn for good. In Jesus Name I ask and pray, amen.

Just posted a prayer as the site crashed! Try again!

Dear Lord in Heaven, as Jerena has said, there are many who have stood for their beliefs and paid the ultimate price for believing in the one true and only God. It must make Thee very sad to see a people who are steeped in their false beliefs and concepts persecuting the Christian believers. But even in countries today where freedom of worship is sanctioned, we are often considered a peculiar people. I can well imagine as they are, that they would think him mad for staying true to his beliefs and rejecting Islam. I pray that Thou would use Abdul's life for good. Let the world continue to make their outrage known at this and put pressure on the government to let him go free and spare his life. I know there are many believers in these countries that worship in secret for the very fear of their lives. Many have tried to leave. I pray that this evil be brought down and that freedom and religious tolerance be established. I know there would be many who would convert if they had a chance to hear the word and have copies of Bibles given to them without fear of retribution. I know of others who listen to Christian radio programs who would be arrested if it were known. I pray for all these children of Thine who are oppressed because of believing in the one true God of the New and Old Testament, that their oppressers may be brought down and for revival in their nations to go forward and in the world wherever oppression exists. I pray for Thy holy angels to protect and preserve Abdul's life. I pray that Thy purposes in letting Abdul's life stand as a testimony of our Lord and Redeemer may be used for Thy glory and furthering Thy work on the earth, I pray in Jesus Holy name amen.

Christian Convert Flees to Italy
Wednesday, March 29, 2006
ROME — The Afghan man who faced the death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity received asylum in Italy Wednesday, despite requests by lawmakers in Afghanistan that he be barred from fleeing the conservative Muslim country. Abdul Rahman arrived in Rome days after he was freed from a high-security prison on the outskirts of Kabul after a court dropped charges of apostasy against him for lack of evidence and suspected mental illness. The case has attracted wide attention in the West and led to calls by the U.S. and other governments for the Afghan government to protect the 41-year-old convert. It also inspired an appeal by Pope Benedict XVI to Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and efforts by the United Nations to find a country to take him in after Muslim clerics in Afghanistan threatened his life, saying his conversion was a "betrayal to Islam."....Conversion is a crime under Afghanistan's Islamic law. Rahman was arrested last month after police discovered him with a Bible. He was brought to trial last week and faced the death penalty for converting 16 years ago while working as a medical aid worker for an international Christian group helping Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Under heavy international pressure by the United States and other nations that helped oust the hard-line Taliban regime and provide aid and military support for Karzai, Rahman was released from prison Monday. President Bush and others had insisted Afghanistan protect personal beliefs. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called Karzai last week and appealed for a "favorable resolution" of the case. Afghanistan's new parliament debated Rahman's case Wednesday and demanded he be barred from leaving the country. But no formal vote was taken on the issue. Some 500 Afghans, including Muslim leaders and students, also gathered at a mosque in the southern town of Qalat, in Zabul province, to demand the convert be forced to return to Islam or be killed. "This is a terrible thing and a major shame for Afghanistan," Zabul's top cleric Abdulrahman Jan said. Germany, where Rahman once lived, praised the Italian move. "This is a humanitarian signal and we welcome it," German government spokesman Thomas Steg said. Italian Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said Tuesday that granting asylum would bring "all the forms of protection and assistance" related to recognizing refugee status. Italy has close ties with Afghanistan, whose former king, Mohammed Zaher Shah, was allowed to live with his family in exile in Rome for 30 years. The former royals returned to Kabul after the fall of the Taliban regime. Italian troops were sent into Afghanistan after the U.S.-led invasion of the country in 2001 to help with reconstruction and Italy still has 1,775 troops there. Rahman's ordeal began as a custody dispute over his two daughters, now 13 and 14. The girls had lived with their grandparents their whole lives but Rahman sought custody when he returned to Afghanistan in 2002 after living in Germany for nine years. A custody battle ensued and the matter was taken to police. During questioning, it emerged that Rahman was a Christian and was carrying a Bible. He was immediately arrested and charged.
